“Narco Tanks” (known as “Narco tanques” in Spanish) is an umbrella term made by the media for the improvised armored cars used by modern drugs cartels in Mexico. SUVs and commercial vehicles serve as the chassis for Narco Tanks, and they are tooled up with armor, turrets, mounted weapons, and even James Bond-like gadgets. They are seen mostly in the Mexican states bordering the USA because these areas have become zones of intense conflict between cartels competing for drugs smuggling routes into the USA. These vehicles typically look like something from the post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max, and were first reported at some point between 2010 and 2011; although the Mexican mass media is often deliberately slow to report on certain cartel-related stories for fear of reprisal attacks.
Created in illicit workshops, these vehicles are well-known for their exotic designs, but for the local Mexicans, they are weapons of an ever-escalating and ever-deadlier inter-cartel war that even the military has been involved in for over ten years.
Narco Tanks were first reported around 2010. They have seen prolific use until 2012, mostly in Tamaulipas, by Los Zetas (and sometimes other cartels), and some limited combat with the military has occurred.

@@ApolloTheDerg In America, the average family car only does 12 miles per gallon on a good day, and 2 dollars per gallon of petrol is considered expensive. @ApolloTheDerg

@@charlesc.9012 And this is far from a modern APC lol. It’s a hack job, points for creativity and cost savings but, it is certainly outside of design spec. The police in Columbia (i think, iam not sure) found a very large Submarine, which could have transported far more cocaine and could have dived deeper than the usual narco sub, in the jungle. They ment to build it there without having to deal with unwelcome visitors, and then push it into a river which flows into the ocean.

@@johjoh978 it was a learned accent used commonly by movie and radio stars in the 30s and 40s in particular. As well as attacks on law enforcement like the military and police. The bullet holes shown in the video show that these vehicles might look like armored cars but welding simple steel plates (even if thick) to existing vehicles does not make them actually armored - more like very heavy, clumsy coffins on wheels. Not to mention that the wheels are probably the weakest point on this vehicles. I doubt you want to find yourself in such a vehicle if Molotov cocktails are used on them. They might be intimidating to some people but in reality it's a deathtrap to the crew.
@backwoodsjunkie08
@backwoodsjunkie08 2 года назад
Your probably right. They are made to be intimidating but not very practical. Most likely they are used to roll up on unsuspecting rival gangs and surprise them. I bet the armor is only good for small caliber stuff like pistol cartridges and not much else. I bet a hot 308 would punch right through most parts of the armor

That 1999 f 150 is actually an 05 super duty. Also these truck all have v8 engines either gasoline or diesel Ford and Dodge did make a v10 for a brief time but they are uncommon enough to be considered rare. Honestly you'd probably be safer in a truck. They're slow and big targets. A stripped down Toyota Hilux or Tacoma with a mounted machine gun would be far more effective. Like how the Taliban or Al Qaeda operated. Fast and nimble in both urban and rural settings. If you were up against a regular police force with standard small arms it could withstand a fair amount. But these narco cartels are anything but equipped with standard small arms. Some of them are basically paramilitary units with high end man portable equipment. The second anything gets through that armor the passengers will be ripped to shreds if not wearing a flack jacket.

Armoured vehicles which appear to be completely standard vehicles would be preferable because the vey best defense is not to be recognised in the first place. Any vehicle that looks like what they initially appear to be (ie, a rusty builders van or a delapidated camper van) will be ignored. Police, Customs and other agencies all have vehicles of this type, wih meticulous work to create the sight of a mound of garbage, fast food containers and empty drinks containers, behind which was a 2 crewed surveillance suite. Hours spent cutting into vehicle bodies, grinding and the spraying on of salt solution to encourage rust was just one technique used. There was one particular vehicle which had a 'Do Not Wash' order, and to do so would have resulted in dismissal. Cartels constructing these vehicles quickly learn that they are a liability and not suited to their task.
