People in all the Nordic countries can eat salmiak (also known as salty liquorice). As a general rule, obviously not every single person will like it. That's pretty unique, although it's also eaten in the Netherlands and northern Germany, but if you look at officially established groups of countries, there's no other where all the members can appreciate that unique flavour.
@ShadowTani
@ShadowTani Год назад
Yeah, it's believed to be genetic, similar to how lactose tolerance is also largely prevalent in the Nordics, except lactose tolerance is more widespread globally compared to licorice appreciation. Those without the genetic trait will experience the licorice as something bitter rather than something sweet because their body "falsely" detects the licorice as a poisonous substance (though to be fair, it can be poisonous if you eat too much within a certain period of time).
@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme Год назад
@@ShadowTani Liquorice and salty liquorice are somewhat different things because salty liquorice contains salmiak (ammonium chloride). I don't believe there are any genetics behind liking or dislikely ammounium chloride. It's likely just an acquired taste, like natto in Japan or many other peculiar regional dishes. Most salmiak (salty liquorice) candies, and other products, do contain liquorice (extract), though. However, the important point is that liquorice without salmiak is consumed more widespread in the world than with it.
@ShadowTani
@ShadowTani Год назад
@@herrakaarme It's strong evidence for it being related to a genetic allele though; it's not a random claim from me, lol, science never claim certainty unless it really is certain, but I digress. I dunno what substance exactly the gene is reacting with, but I still think it was one that is shared between licorice and salmiakk.
@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme Год назад
@@ShadowTani Ammonium chloride, salmiak, is a harmful chemical, with a clear, pungent taste. It's a strong irritant of eyes and respiratory organs. LD50 isn't especially low (low means bad), just half of ordinary table salt (table salt is more than twice as poisonous as ethanol, for example), but its use in food is still restricted by regulations. Every single person should thus find salmiak kind of a weird taste when new to it. It's a pure, inorganic salt's chemical taste, after all. Nobody really likes to eat sodium chloride (table salt) as it is either, unless you are suffering from a medically relevant condition. Liquorice, however, is a complex plant extract. Its flavour can't be said to be just a single chemical, not even two or three, and other plant extracts can have somewhat similar tastes. Who knows why salmiak and liquorice go well together, but so do table salt and greasy potatoes, giving us fries and chips. All that being said, the salmiak and liquorice contents of candies aren't super high. What you are mostly eating is filler like sugar, starch, and such.
@Valjean666dk
@Valjean666dk 11 месяцев назад
@@herrakaarme Unlike salt, many people like the taste of salmiak by itself. It's not uncommon for chemistry teachers to haul out a large jar of the stuff so kids can have a taste. At least here in Scandinavia.

@signerasmussen7946
@signerasmussen7946 9 месяцев назад
The essense/rules of Janteloven is something we have in common in our cultures - but the 10 rules are very negative. I don't know how others were taught about it in school, but I was thought about it being a thing at all (I'm glad I didn't really feel the full effects of it growing up in a small town) and that it represses people that just want to live their life the way that makes them happy but doesn't conform with the main part of people. I really hope that we have moved away from it since I was a kid (I'm 45 now) and be proud of who we are and what we have accomplished - because people really should be imo. So it's not an "equal" thing by saying we're worth the same. But I will not deny it has defined us. You're not to think you are anything special. You're not to think you are as good as we are. You're not to think you are smarter than we are. You're not to imagine yourself better than we are. You're not to think you know more than we do. You're not to think you are more important than we are. You're not to think you are good at anything. You're not to laugh at us. You're not to think anyone cares about you. You're not to think you can teach us anything.

The 15-20 wars between Denmark and Sweden??? Its way more complicated than that. What constitutes a war? Is there an official declaration of war or peace? For these two nations it is easier to think of them as being in a consistent state of war from 1523 to 1814, but periods in that time frame was marked by peace, and even allied nations against common enemies. Sometimes both allied and enemies in the same war.

@@norwaybaba3381 Iceland (Garðarsholmr), Greenland (Eystribygð) and the Faroe Islands (Færeyjar) used to be part of the Kingdom of Norway until the treaty of Kiel (1814) that marked a "resolution" to the Napoleonic wars. Mainland Norway was ceded to Sweden, but Denmark kept the Norwegian overseas territories under its rule. Iceland gained its independence from Denmark after WW2, and although still officially part of Denmark, both Greenland (1979) and Faroe Islands (1948) have autonomic rule. Interestingly, both the Orkney (Orkneyjar) and Shetland (Hjaltland) Islands used to be part of Norway as well, but were ceded to Scotland in 1472, and Jemtland and Herjedalen (formerly part of the Norwegian mainland) were ceded to Sweden in 1645.

this video was made in a fun way not to be completely accurate, the oil in Norway was found way way later than the wars was going on in Scandinavia, the wars goes back to Viking times and beyond and was certainly about expansion of wealth and power as all wars but not about oil, a thing he did not touch on about Denmarks relation to being Scandinavian is the fact Danes first settled in what is today southern Sweden, the area of Scania/Skåne where the name Scandinavia comes from plus the area Blekinge and Halland , later Danes spread to modern day Denmark, the areas in Southern Sweden was home of the Danes for thousands of years until it was lost in a war in 1648, about 200 years ago there was a "pan Scandinavian" movement who wanted a Cooperation among the 3 countries based on shared history, language and culture and that is why Denmark, Norway and Sweden are Scandinavian countries today, the Scandinavian languages are very similar Germanic languages ,if we speak slowly and clearly we can understand each other , where as Finnish is an Uralic language like Estonian and Hungarian, Icelandic is also a Germanic language however very close to old Norse the language of the Vikings, Scandinavians have forgotten that language we don't understand much of it but cool Iceland have preserved it!, Faroese is closer to Icelandic than Scandinavian languages and Greenlandic is an Inuit language.

Death Metal was mentioned, but more importantly Black Metal, Metal and Viking Metal is even more important. The Scandinavian countries are not very religious, and only a very small percentage follows the Abrahemic religions, and those that are registered members of the Christian churches, are mainly atheists that has been made members from birth (babtised because of tradition as namegiving ritual, and not because of religious beliefs), and that just f don't care enough to opt out again. People are however far more spiritual, and holistic and Pagan (animism) is on the rise (like me, Norse heathen), together with humanism, atheism, satanism, and agnostics, making for a liberal society where everyone is equal to another (we don't bow to anyone, not even royalty).

It is a walk where three feet are always on the ground so to not sink into the often marchy ground. Their lighter weight also helps this way.
