At the end of the 19th century, the region was the land of Firmo Mendes de Queiroz, a descendant of São Paulo bandeirantes, who donated two pieces of land for the construction of a chapel in honor of Saint John the Baptist. In 1896, 1,500 Ukrainian families were attracted to the region, totaling eight thousand immigrants. The settlers were settled in different settlements, where they became small farmers, livestock farmers and industrialists. The municipality was formed in 1906, under the name Prudentópolis in honor of President Prudente de Morais. Immigration of Ukrainians to the region lasted until the mid-1920s and, currently, the municipality is considered the most Ukrainian in Brazil, with 80% of the population descending from immigrants.
The region where these Ukrainians came from is Galicina/Galicia, which was once autonomous and also belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Poland and Ukraine itself. The new geography, which places the territory predominantly in present-day Ukraine, was designed after the end of the First World War. The Poles from Prudentópolis, and the few "Germans" (Austrians) come from Galicia. This region was also populated by Jews, Poles, Germans and Austrians. Its capital is Lemberg (in German), also called Львів/Lviv (Ukrainian) or Lwów (Polish). Prudentópolis has a town called Nova Galícia, exactly in honor of this origin.
Prudentópolis is considered sister cities of UkraineTernopil, Ukraine.
Culture
The city has a characteristic architecture, with several buildings that refer to Slavic culture. On October 5, 2021, the city council unanimously approved Project Law no. 024/2021, which makes the Ukrainian language official in the municipality.
