Pram is short for perambulator.Prams or perambulators date back to around 1733 when the Duke of Devonshire asked English architect and furniture designer William Kent to make a carriage for his children to keep them amused while they played in the grounds of Chatsworth House.

"Bach was originally thought to be short for bachelor pad, but they tended to be family holiday homes. An alternative theory for the origin of the word is that bach is the Welsh word for "small" and "little". The phrase "Tŷ Bach" (small house) is used for outbuildings. Sizeable populations of Welsh miners relocated to New Zealand during mining booms."

In Australia chook is as common as chicken. Apparently its a very old English word that came over with the 1st settlers and has stayed.

In ireland it does'nt always mean you own a holiday home most people years ago would rent a house to spend a week near the coast or countryside because it was the cheapest option. However nowadays it is cheaper for irish people to go abroad than to vacation/holiday in ireland itself.

When I was a child in the 60’s in Australia we played with plastic things shaped like knuckle bones because the game of Jacks originally used real knuckle bones from an animal that had been eaten ( eg. Roast meat of some sort). We threw one up in the air instead of bouncing a ball. I actually had one real knuckle bone that I kept from a roast dinner we had.

I saw one comment from NZ that said we called Jacks Knucklebones which was the same in Australia ( I think it’s originally an English term).

Hurricane's and cyclone's are different. If this weather pattern hits New Zealand or Australia (like they have lately) they are cyclone's. If they hit USA or UK they will be Hurricane's.

In New Zealand if the toilet is outside we can call it a long drop as well.

2:14 in Dublin we'd say the jacks, and this is where the term jack-shit came from. Because the person who invented his name was jack, and people called him jackshit. When he changed his name and disappeared from public, you dont know jack-shit, the term stuck around the toilet is called the jacks. Some might spell it jax. 6:35 we dont say vacation we say holidays or holliers.

Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are named based on where in the world the storm happens. Hurricanes: Occur in the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific. Cyclones: Occur in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Typhoons: Occur in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.

I’m from southern NZ and we grew up saying Crib not Bach, there are a few words we say differently to the rest of NZ perhaps it’s the Scottish/ Irish influence.

Loo is normally a southern English word (for WC). It comes from the 1st holidaying (vacation) people who stayed it small hotels in France with no en-suites. Instead, the accommendation, always on the first floor, had a shared toilet/ bathroom which was always room 100 hence loo!

People still use prams but most of them now can be converted to a car seat or buggy/stroller.

How did the aussie not know what a bach was, its quite common here, but then he called it a toilet and we say loo or dunny
@thevannmann
@thevannmann Год назад
You'll find that the majority of Australians have never heard of a "bach" before because that's a NZ-derived term. The most common terminology in Australia is holiday home or holiday house. As for the toilet, yeah, that's what most Australians call it. The loo is uncommonly used and dunny is archaic and hardly anyone in a major city will say that.
