I don't think public transport needs to be subsidized but routes have to be designed to make it profitable but subsidizing would not be pro people there as it means they have to take money from somewhere though it still can be seen as reducing the carbon footprint of a high percapita emissions country which helps future gen of us n everywhere else...they ideally should be able to purchase tickets with debit card n routes could be redesigned to link buses n trains similar to European countries

Bro in India if you travel by train or Bus, then you will know that they are over crowded, bus always comes late and you will never get change in return. Also all guys will be sticking with each other in such a way your sweat will be absorbed by the shirt of guy standing next to you in kissing position. If any one sneezes due to extreme heat and dust condition in Tamil Nadu, we will all get to taste those droplets from his nose. Some of them have Pan parag/Kanja in their mouth ready. So totally if you enjoy sweat, sneeze/cough, spit and standing in kissing position, then public transport in India is the best. Even in long distance trains now a days unreserved people are travelling in reserved coaches. You are travelling as a single person in the entire coach, think about the privilege you are getting there. They don't need public transport that much since government has properly built roads for all with the tax money.
