The game would have ended in 4 sets had Zehra Gunes and Hande Balad (aka Baladin) been able to play. In the 4th set, the US just pulverised the Turkish middle, and romped to a 25-12 win.

Hande also was wearing a neck brace, thought she was dressed in her uniform, and listed as a substitute today. Derya has played in place of Hande, with Tugba Ivegin played a fantastic set role as a substitute. The person that Santarelli may need to replace is Beyza Arici. The lack of middle blocking in the absence of Zehra was exposed by the US in that 4th set. The US was literally scoring at will, and to my uneducated eyes, that seemed to speak of a deficit in size in the Turkish middle block. The starting middle blocker for Turkey was the 6ft tall Asli Kalach, Eda Ederm is 6'2.. while the US was running away with a 6'8 Danielle Retke in the middle.

In the 4th set, the middle blocking of Turkey just collapsed. Santarelli frantically tried every possilbe substitution, bringing Ilkin, Beyza, Tugba Ivegin etc, all to no avail. It showed the importance of Zehra Gunes, who sitting on the bench with kind of problem to the right leg. Hopefully whatever is afflicting her is ephemeral, because they will need her against Poland, Serbia, Italy, China, Brazil and all the top teams, which will be in Paris.

I was there, and Ebrar, again, was terrible in defense. She gives so much in offense, but she so much of the offense back with her errors in defense.

Vargas plays as always about same high level, even in this game she was often blocked. But Karakurt took the team far beyond this time. She made high pressure from beginning till end and scored several times. This is different to the last matches in VNL she played in the last days. This game Turkiye was more in need of her because with Vargas alone you can't beat up this level teams. So, watch the game again, Karakurt was compared to the last games the factor that made the big difference this time. In the 2nd and 3rd sets she was very effective in taking the lead and bringing the team in lead.

The stars were Vargas and Gizem.

@@MzeewaUjijilol how do you know there were so many Turkish people who couldn’t speak English? Majority of those people are 1st or 2nd gen Turkish people who are bilingual. Many live in Texas or in surrounding states but there were a few bunch who flew in from either the East or the West coast, like us. I was in the venue and watched the game in person. The venue was 50% USA fans and 50% Turkish fans. It was deafening at times for sure because the game was tight and the Turkish fans are way more passionate than the USA fans. 😁

The difference, again, was one Melissa Vargas. Next time there is a Cuban phenomenon availaible on the open market, the US should get in the sweepstakes, and nationalise her in 4hrs to beat the 5hrs Turkey took to nationalise Melissa Vargas

Vargas yes, Karakurt no. Karakurt is so terrible in defense that I suspect that her +/- was consistently lower than that of Derya Cebecioglu, who played well in the place of Hande Balad. I do realise that the Russian fans have a special place in their hearts for her, because of how she plays for Locomotive Kaliningrad...

@@Cemm1905 What is wrong with you? Karakurt is not the best player in Turkey. Vargas is the heart of Turkey. I was there in Arlington for the Turkey games. Vargas is the only player who played every single minute of every match. Gizen Orge and Elif Sahin were more important to Turkey than Ebrar Karakurt was. The problem with Ebrar is that she is terrible in defence. Vargas is excellent in defence, excellent in passing, excellent in blocking at the net, excellent in serving, and excellent in killing. When you combine everything, the US has no one like that, Egonu is not the defender that Vargas is, neither is Boskovic,- which leaves Vargas as the best opposite in the world, never mind in Turkey

Amerika gerçekten çok iyi oynadı. Bir ara, maç koptu ve alacaklar zannettim. Tam bir final havası hakimdi. Türkiye inişli çıkışlı oynuyor. Stabil bir görüntüsü yok. Adrenalin maçlarında inanılmaz gaza gelip, son dakikalarda alıyoruz maçları. Bu ne kadar böyle devam eder, bilmiyorum. Amerika bence bu takımla çok iyi iş çıkartır Olympiyatlarda. Türkiye daha tam kadrosunu oturtamadı bence. Bu arada, Vargasa lafım yok, Ebrar bu sefer iyiydi, ama Derya gerçekten çok hızlı adımlarla dünya yıldızı oluyor. Gabi'nin Türk versiyonu sahnede !

Iniş çıkışın nedeni de handenin eksikliği biraz manşette derya aksadığı için o an da toparlanamadık. Ebrar da 4. Set yoruldu deryayı da manşette kapattı manşette aksayınca oyunun ritmi düştü. Ama normal iniş çıkışlar ABD iyi servis attı bir ara. Toparlarız diye umut ediyorum.​@@pashha27

Exactly. It's like taking away Egonu, Boskovic, Gabi (or Ana Cristina, she changed Brazil compared to last year) from their teams. These top players will keep playing. And Vargas and Ana Cristina are the youngest of the batch, they'll have at least 2 to 3 Olympics / World Championships to dispute. Vargas will play another 12 years at top level unless something horrible happens, I'd say if she takes care of herself 14 years are not crazy to think about.

Poland and Serbia are always trouble for us. We wish to face Brazil in quarter finals and send them empty handed first because they don't deserve it. Serbia is playing with their youngsters this year so it leaves Poland, Italy and Turkiye. It would be great for us if we face Italy in the finals because Italians want revenge from us and they are certain that they can win. That is enough motivation for the Turkish team to prove them wrong. Italy will get better for sure because their players are top quality but I think we have more willpower than them. Poland is the most composed team at the moment, I don't think we can beat Poland right now, but in couple of weeks maybe we can as our injured players come back and as we find our rhythm.
