Those rebreathers are commonly used in the mining industry. The idea with the ice makes perfect sense...this is a hard won piece of knowledge. Being from the Ruhr in Germany, which used to be the main coal mining are of the country for many decades, I know miners had a scaled down version of those on their person, or there were crates with a number of them near the coal face and every few junctions within the mine. They consisted of a mouth piece, a nose clamp, a hose and a canister with the chemicals and were called "Selbstretter" (Self rescuers). They were good for about 30 - 45 minutes or so, and one of the chief complaints was that they got very hot very quickly, sometimes even leading to mouth and airway burns. Sure, it beats dying from carbon monoxide damp a mile underground, but it still is not fun. The firefighters who would go into the mines were not much better off, even though they wore systems that were very similar to what is seen here. Their backpack covers were usually made of shiny aluminium, sometimes painted white. Not sure what the situation today is, though. My knowledge dates from the 80s when there were still many mines around, as well as stories from old miners.
@ruhrpilot
@ruhrpilot 2 года назад
These "Filterselbstretter" that were used in western german coal mining industry, made by MSA (former Auergesellschaft) and called W65(/2) and W95, are only filtering devices with a catalytic converter that converts CO to CO2, which is an exothermal reaction generating the heat that you are talking from. They were equipped with an small heat exchanger at the mouthpiece, but in high CO concentration environments the air could get really hot. Every miner had to carry this device with him all the time, ready for immediate usage. It was prohibited to put it down and leave it for example in the break area or somewhere else. What you see here in this video is the Dräger BG4 plus, which is a fully closed recirculation device with a CO2 absorber filled with soda lime, that absorbs CO2 from the exhaled air and enriches it with oxygen out of the bottle so that it can be breathed again. This BG4 (and its predecessor Dräger Travox) was also used in german coal mining industry, but only by the "Grubenwehr" (Mining Fire Brigade). The absorption of CO2 also generates heat, so that the ice filled heat exchanger it is a large comfort increase for the wearer. The older Dräger Travox didn´t have that.

@ca_enright

On this specific model (Drager BG-4), the chemical reaction is to scrub the carbon dioxide from the rebreathed air (upper left), with oxygen added on demand and on a slow constant supply from a cylinder at the bottom of the pack. The reaction plus normal human body heat is why the air gets warm, so cooling is done with a block of ice in the upper right side of the rebreather. (I was a mine rescue tech for a while)

My biggest question is why did they not shut the power to those transformers off. I would think that de-energizing the transformers would be the first thing that would be done before even daring to put water or any other fire suppressant onto that kind of fire.
@TheDrew2022
@TheDrew2022 2 года назад
They meaning the FDNY can't de-energize the transformers, that has to be done by the utility (ConEd?) and they typically take half an hour to respond and figure out where to disconnect power. Putting water on the fire while energized can be done as they don't spray the transformers directly, they spray the ground around the vault, letting the water flow in, flooding the vault. The vault itself and the grates around the vault are grounded so the path for any stray fault current will go into the vault wall and to ground, not through the stream coming from the nozzle.

I think I know how rebreathers work, but what is the purpose of them in firefighting applications? Extended breathing air supply?
@hos3jock3y28
@hos3jock3y28 2 года назад
Correct.
@coopthetitan
@coopthetitan 2 года назад
Rebreathers are a closed circuit system as opposed to an open circuit system that is traditionaly used. Being a closed circuit system that means when you exhale the excess air does not got back into the atmposphere but instead goes back into the system and gets "scrubbed", creating clean breathing air again. It significantly improves air supply and iam curious to see how well it plays into firefighting application in the future. I personally think that they can be very useful however they do require a lot more maintence than a normal SCBA.

Essentially yes. Applicable to situations were taking 3 extra SCBA bottles with you is not that practical. Very few fire departments use these. I imagine that these are being used here to perform search in large buildings without the hassle of going to change bottles every 30 minutes. This is likely low intensity work - mostly walking and forcing doors. These wouldn't be used in an intense firefighting situation because the wearer would get exhausted long before 3 or 4 hour air supply runs out. These are for working is a hazardous atmosphere for longer periods doing low to moderate intensity work were you wouldn't want to have to step out every 30 minutes to change SCBA bottles. Think search or haz-mat situations - not pulling hose or ceilings or fighting fire. Made for applications where the air supply is the limiting aspect and not the physical endurance of the wearer....

It is surprising that none of the fuses, breakers or disconnects shut off power. Also not sure why the utility couldnt shut down power to that vault...
@iovanalex
@iovanalex 2 года назад
this might not be such large tripping in current on long term; just spikes when the dielectric is breaking (hear the popping sounds); fuses at MV and HV are rated for huge amounts of energy; this si more smoke and dangerous for the humans passing by than for the grid;
@matthewromano8801
@matthewromano8801 2 года назад
There are multiple transformers along that HV run, the process and steps involved of shutting the feeder off is lengthy to ensure everyone's safety and would also cause an immediate outage to any other building who's transformer is on that run. That fire also sounds like it was on the low voltage side of the transformer, HV side you usually get a bang and some fire and it trips the feeder open. Low voltage side is networked together with other vaults and in the street, so if it shorts it'll continue to arc until it burns itself clear.

@CAUM75
@CAUM75 2 года назад
"Will hold" typically means that the incident will hold with the current assignment (number of companies committed) - no additional alarms will be transmitted. "Doubtful" is a shortened version of "Doubtful will hold" which means additional resources will be required (additional alarms/companies assigned) most likely due to the fire continuing to burn/spread.

I don't know why the FDNY isn't trained and have authoritative knowledge and power to cut off electrical power for these common issues, just spraying water to 200k volts transformer is really a dumb thing to do. This is according to basic firefighting g 101 and a large power company firefighter Training school that deals specifically electrical or gas equipment fires. This is just another example of the true failures in the tactics and strategies of this Dept. Not the men on the trucks they are good men, but the command staff thet need to go to school. As was well said, 175 years of tradition unimpeded by progress.

I don't know the specifics of the nozzle that they are using, but you MOST DEFINATELY can buy fire hose nozzles that are UL Listed and Factory Mutual approved for electrical fires.....
@turninmonyin2noise978
@turninmonyin2noise978 2 года назад
@@kayakingphotos the task force tip was the one approved for a specific pole mounted transformer but never for vault fires. An electrical fire can never truly be extinguished till the power is removed. The power Companis consider all the equipment junk as soon as a fire is involved, so the FD is creating undue risk of safety putting water on an electrical junk fire. This would be the opinion of the electric power companies.

Kinda looked like they were using a fog nozzle to help push/evacuate smoke, not put out the fire. Perhaps creating a slight vacuum to improve search conditions while they worked on shutting utilities off? Maybe a blitzfire monitor or something? I saw them pull the first nozzle they had on the line, but didn’t see what it was replaced with. I’ve seen UL listed nozzles but don’t know the recommendations on usage with electrical fires. Certainly wouldn’t want a straight stream ;)

A fog pattern on a electrical fire is less conducive and usually unlikely that the current will follow back to the hose being used causing and risk.

I was surprised to find barely any comments about this. I am not an expert by any means but putting out a transformer fire with water does dangerous. Also the fire didnt pose an immediate danger to life, it could have been left smoking and burning itself out.

Good grief. Water is not as conductive as a metal conductor that is earthed to ground. Electricity, the same as anything and anyone wants an easy life and will travel the easiest path. Water is seldom the easiest path. Pure Water isn't conductive. Tap water is a poor conductor. The grounding on major electrical installations are highly conductive. It would be better to shut off power I agree. However, water on an electrical fire if you are stood back, in turnout gear, with ground arcing taking place is a good position to be in.
