Hello! I'm Tina, I run 'Made with April' with my dog, April! Thank you for watching my video and coming with me on a crazy market day! This market was 'Lilac Festival' in Calgary, Alberta.
This was a huge street festival spanning 15 blocks of pedestrian-only traffic in downtown Calgary. It was definitely a new experience and I never expected it to be as crazy as it was!
Leave a like if you enjoyed the video and don't forget to subscribe to follow my journey as I learn more about the market/craft fair world!

Lol you could have a sign and say pick your own flower and people will still go around it😅. Your booth looked amazing!!

Haha right?? I have signs for everything and every single time at least one person will ask anyway bahaha it is what it is!! Thank you!!

As someone with 15 years in retail, I can confirm that 😅
@laurent3415

I apologize in advance as this will be a bit of a long one. As a person that has worked in retail clothing sales for 17 years, I can say with certainty that some people are incapable of basic reading comprehension. Unfortunately, there is no magic word combination that will make these types of people comprehend the information provided on a sign. What I do when someone interrupts is acknowledge their immediate question, inform them that I am almost done assisting the guest they interrupted, provide the interrupter a task, and then immediately bring my attention back to the original customer. The explanation sounds harsher than it really is so here's what this looks/sounds like: "Yes ma'am/sir, that [item] is $10. I recommend having a look at these [point to a few items] while I finish assisting this lady/gentleman. I'll be back with you shortly to answer any other questions you may have." [I smile and turn back to the person I was originally assisting.] It's polite, yet firm. It prioritizes the customer I was already assisting while acknowledging that the interrupting guest is equally important. Here's another example: "Yes, that [item] goes with that set. The one you just picked would look great with any of these [point out a few items]. I'll give you a few moments to pick out your favorites. Meanwhile, I'll be over here taking care of a couple people that are ready to check out." [If they start to protest or ask another question] It'll only be a moment ma'am/sir. I'll be back in no time." [I'll smile, gesture to where I will be, and I walk away.] Like before, it's polite and encourages the customer to self-serve for a moment or two while I take care of more immediate customer needs. Every time I break away from a customer that is still shopping, I give them a simple task that will occupy them for about 2-5 minutes. This allows me to break away from a larger quantity of customers, giving me time to take care of those that have more complex needs or are ready to pay. This will really only work if you are able to break your interactions with customers into smaller increments per customer. It feels chaotic at first, but with some practice it begins to flow smoothly.

omg this was an amazing read, these are perfect for me to try out tomorrow!! I'm always so awkward when I don't have a 'set phrase' in mind so I'll definitely have to come back to these. Thank you so much!! I will also probably be redirecting other people to this comment so they can refer to it LOL

This might be helpful in the future. For weights, I went to a home improvement store and bought bricks that fit into the sandbags. If you do a pop up that requires a certain amount of weight for each leg, then you can add sand to meet the requirement. If you just want enough to weigh down the tent, the bricks will do fine and you won't spill sand in your car.
@madewithapril
@madewithapril Год назад
Ahh bricks are such a good idea, everyone refers to it as sandbags so i never even considered using anything else hahaha

You booth was amazing…looking like a beautiful florist!!! Thanks to your inspiration, I completely crochet a mixture of flowers for a large arrangement for my grandsons teacher as an end of the school year thank you gift. I presented it to her and she cried!!! She was extremely touched. I was looking to see if you had an email to send you photos, but I didn’t see one. Thanks again for inspiring me!!! Stay positive and don’t let anyone steal your joy!!! They will try, but you have control of if they succeed. Stay safe and be blessed ❤

3:45 oh girl - my first farmers market the booth next to me had a second tent behind their tent for shade and I thought that’s super smart thinking but then disaster 😮 they didn’t have enough weight on it and one of the legs I let them tie together with one of the back legs of my tent - never let anyone tie their tent to yours 😮 - luckily for me I was standing towards the back of my tent when I was talking to a customer and the wind hit and I felt their tent lifting so I grabbed my tent and held on. The second tent lifted up moving forward to land on top of their main tent. So the main tent back legs lifted and moved forward and the whole front came falling forward right on top of a lady!! She fell on her back with the frame landing on her forehead!!! This was Mother’s Day for goodness sakes!! What a sad outing for her. Omg I was shaking and so was my customer but my little 2 year old was getting so scared I had to play it cool. More bags always. Forget the nails 😅😅 yeah they had an ambulance come and they packed up - their booth had sewn things but half was sublimated glassware 😮😮
@vidotter
@vidotter Год назад
There were 100+ vendors at this farmers market and they were like it happens and you need more weight and my other neighbor had a strap on his tent frame to his truck that he had parked behind his booth “that way it wouldn’t blow forward” - you gotta have some balls to do outdoor shows Lordy 😅😅😅
@madewithapril
@madewithapril Год назад
oh my gosh thats terrifying, I've heard stories about people's tents blowing away but it seems so heavy I never really considered it but I think this story is enough to motivate me to always bring extra sandbags hahaha I heard once that someone thought it would be smart to tie their tent to their table and their table ended up flying up a bit and everything flew off!! Craziness 😅😅

If you were 100% handmade or an informational booth you could set up inside for free so I did that but me and at least one other vendor had stuff stolen, people were just crazy rude and rough with stuff. I am sorry I don't mean to be rude but you complained a lot. I 've been watching many vlogs as it's my plan for the future to be involved in markets, you were so ungrateful, if it's that busy it means there is potential. Try to focus on the positive, I have seen on many videos, people had no sales yet they didn't complain as you did.

Thank you for sharing! I try to be honest and transparent in my videos to show every side of what it's like to be a vendor! You come across as whining and ungrateful for business. Its your responsibility to have proper signage and someone to help you with customers. I feel sad for people who patronized you and now youre complainjng about them.
@madewithapril
@madewithapril 9 месяцев назад
I understand where youre coming from, but I provided multiple displays, menus, and signs for prices and information for customers. I also can't afford to hire someone to help me with customers. It was my first time at this event, and it was much crazier, rowdier, and busier than I expected it to be. By the end of the day I had around a $100 worth of product and display materials that were damaged. While I appreciate all the support I can get, sometimes this is the reality of doing a market. I don't want to come off as too whiny and I apologize that I came off as ungrateful, but this is a vlog of my experience and how I felt.
