Ciao Ragazzi !
Leopard geckos are undeniably one of if not the most popular reptiles in this hobby.
But, believe it or not, I never planned to get one myself.
About a year ago, I was given the opportunity to rescue a little gecko called Arturo.
Today i’m building him a new home. this time, we’ll be going for a naturalistic woodland look, with a unique underground burrow system, proper lighting, and automated heating.
This was all made possible by ExoTerra who kindly provided me with the materials for this project, so a huge thanks to them!
Here is the link to Herp HQS:s video ¨Leopard Geckos Don't Live in Deserts?¨

I like this. I did this sort of thing because it’s absolutely possible to do bioactive in a drier setup. Although leopard geckos are not necessarily a true "desert" species, if you look at pictures or descriptions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India… at least not desert in the sense of a bearded dragon, a Gila monster, etc. The areas of South Asia where leopard geckos live are definitely dry and warm, especially in the summer days (and most days), but also temperate and forested in some regions, and cold in winter and at night. Rocky hillsides with bushes, canyons, ravines, glens, etc. On a similar note, I had a pair of African fat-tailed geckos for over ten years, until I had to move because of a fire. I kept reading about them not needing UVB and everything, so I figured the ideal exposure for them was to keep the tank in a northern facing window, with no UVB, but the window filled the tank with natural sunlight on a natural rhythm. Animals and plants are very sensitive to circadian rhythms and solar patterns. At night, I had the blacklight for them, which they frequently laid under. But during the day, they slept on the heating pad, and the natural light was there if they needed it. After we had a fire, I had to move. But surprisingly I was able to "gift" them to the San Diego Zoo, where I live. I don’t know if they’re actually on exhibit, though I’ve seen the species there before, but a lady from the zoo came to my house and took them from me. So that was the best case scenario.
@LoFiAxolotl
@LoFiAxolotl 24 дня назад
they are a true desert species... just that people tend to think of deserts as these huge sand dunes which are not what deserts actually are... there's very few actual sand deserts... Desert, Arid, Temperate etc refer to climates not the ground
@terraquaman
@terraquaman 6 часов назад
Thank you for sharing your experience and insights! It’s great to hear about different ways to create a suitable environment for geckos, and I agree that a bioactive setup can be adapted to various conditions. Your setup for the African fat-tailed geckos sounds incredibly thoughtful, especially with the natural light and circadian rhythm considerations. I’m sorry to hear about the fire, but it’s wonderful that you could rehome them to the San Diego Zoo. It sounds like they’re in good hands!

This is actually a bad urban myth. Animal1guy tested this on his channel, the coil bulbs outperform the strip bulbs. I have found this myself using a uvb meter. The strip bulbs lose uvb beyond 4 inches. The coil bulbs are good to over 8. Yes, it is more of a directed light but with a decent fixture it can cover a 10 inch radius. I wish people would stop regurgitating things they hear from other people regurgitating complete BS and actually find it out for themselves.

Wanted to say that I really love your channel. You make beautiful and natural looking habitats. By the way the balloon technique to make the caves was genius. As a leopard gecko owner I wanted to provide some advices I guess. First of all the gecko you have seems to be pretty overweight, I would cut back on the worms and just keep him on crickets for like a few months (crickets have less fat than worms). Another thing is that leopard geckos sleep during the day and come out at night when the lights are off, so your heating lamp doesn’t make much sense as it won’t really bask. In nature they come out once the sun is down and lie down on warm rocks which is why heat mats are usually the way to go with the Leo geckos. You can just put one under the terrarium on one side so that it can have a warm hide. To add to the lights topic, leopard geckos with lighter eyes such as yours are very sensitive to light and can really just see better in the darkness, I remember I tried feeding mine with the lights on and it just wouldn’t even see the cricket, in your case the gecko is obviously experienced and can see the insects but still, make sure to turn off the light at the evening and so it’s dark until morning. I also sincerely hope he picks a poop spot that’s not in the cave system lol. Anyhow I hope this helps, once again love your channel and your vids (your editing is really good) and give your beautiful cat a treat from me )))
@redjacket5828
@redjacket5828 29 дней назад
If anything this just means there's a design flaw. Overhead heating is more natural and with a lot of benefitting options! Many leopard geckos in captivity have been seen basking. Putting a slate rock where the sensor for the thermostat would encourage those natural behaviors and would still be good and beneficial for the gecko especially if he made the switch to a halogen bulb. Putting a heat mat on the side of the tank has been advised against for years so I wouldn't recommend that.
@masonbarbour1203
@masonbarbour1203 29 дней назад
While you definitely know more about leopards than me id like to say i disagree on the under the tank heating. just because in the wild they have the temps they need from the sun while its not heating them directly if they dont bask(which some will the one i rescued for a little bit did) it will more naturally provide them with the heat they need as in the wild animals go underground for refuge from the heat which Mats and tape will make it hotter to go underground
@alexandereichhorst2529
@alexandereichhorst2529 29 дней назад
You do have a point. I was referring more to the general rule of Leopard Gecko enclosures where you should have a cold hide, warm hide and a humid hide. The warm hide is necessary because leopard geckos need to heat their bellies a bit to launch the process of digestion (mine after eating goes and lies down in the warm hide for a few hours). The humid hide for when shedding, mine would shed there (it’s like they know what each one is for). And a regular cooler hide where they just sleep. I was referring to having a little heat mat covering like 10 cm on the far right of the cave system. That way the far left can be cooler and the right can be warmer. That way the leopard gecko can choose where exactly it prefers to be. As for the stuff they get from the sun, as far as I know they need to get vitamin D3. They usually get it from the sun but most owners just buy calcium with d3 with which they dust the insects they give to leopard gecko.
@alpoh
@alpoh 28 дней назад
Horrible advice honestly... Under tank heating is NOT recommended above overheat heat. The sun heats the earth... from outside/above. The earth doesn't emit heat on it's own, like a heat mat would simulate. Leopard geckos are crepuscular, not nocturnal. They are out when the sun is still up, or just rising. My leopard gecko is particularly active during day, because she's social and wants attention. Advising against overhead light is just plain incorrect and a horrible take. Animals need a night and day cycle. As far as their eyes-- that is also totally incorrect. Eye color does not have any impact on light reception, unless it is a mutant gene such as albinism. If the light hurt, they wouldn't be out in it. They're fine.

Thank you so much for the kind words and your input. My gecko has a pooping spot in the front corner so I’m lucky it’s not in the caves 😊

It turned out beatiful! I love your tanks and itˋs amazing how naturalistic an big most of them are. But if I may give you a few tips, the bearded dragon enclosure should offer more opportunities for climbing and in my opinion the homes for „bigger“ reptiles as the bearded dragon and the Basilisk could never be tall enough. The terrariums for your other animals are perfect though. Another thought - maybe you should give your leopard gecko less fat worms, he needs a diet ;) Really appreciate your videos 🤗

I didn't know that people attributed both red sand/soil to Australia, and leopard geckos to arrid desert climates. Red soils and sands are found famously in other parts of the world; and leopard geckos are geckos, the soft skinned lizards with the freaky feat evolved to climb in their native environment of usually warm wet forrests.
@terraquaman
@terraquaman 6 часов назад
You’re absolutely right! Red soils and sands are found in various regions around the world, not just Australia. And leopard geckos do have a fascinating natural habitat that isn't solely desert. They are indeed native to regions with a mix of warm and often dry conditions, but they can also be found in more varied environments, including rocky and semi-arid areas. Their adaptations allow them to thrive in different habitats, and it's important to consider their diverse natural history when setting up their enclosures. Thanks for pointing that out!

My good sir, that very expensive substratum is for the plants. Its supposed to be used as a soil additive or even a complete soil replacment. Using it as the drainage layer is a huge waste 😢 Also, the use of the clay for the humid hide, may result in a weak design. The clay is ment to dry and harden compleatly. Continues spraying to water the plants and moisten said hide will eventually wash the clay out and result in a colaps. Dont get me wrong, this all looks amazing. But even the use of coiled uvb and the che. Lots of things that will need to eventually be changed to dial in for more consistent husbandry. I would of went with a linear uvb bulb and a dhp.

I can always reuse the substratum in the future 😊 I’ll definitely keep en eye out on the cave system and the uvb will get an upgrade. Thanks for your input! 😊

What happens if you need to get him out but he's in the hide? 🤔
@terraquaman
@terraquaman День назад
I would try to get him out with food. If that doesn’t work and it’s an emergency I would have to break the cave. In the future I would like to construct a cave with a removable lid.

I’m lucky that Arturo has chosen a pooping spot outside the cave 😆

WHY DID HE KEEP POURING WATER IN THE BOWL AFTER IT WAS OVERFLOWING 😭 23:52

I poured the water too fast so it just spilled over and didn’t fill the bowl. 😆

no hate but coil uvb lights tend to be awful. You should get a uv radar to see if its working.

Can someone explain to me why the pothos plant started to die and he removed it?
@terraquaman
@terraquaman День назад
I cut the part of the plant that had the roots because it was too long and I thought it would be enough to put the plant in the soil without roots but it unfortunately didn’t work. The soil need to be much more hydrated for that to work.

Зачем UVB сумеречно-ночной ящерице?
@terraquaman
@terraquaman 6 часов назад

WIth Leopard Geckos (and all animals especially Lizards) it's not always the best idea to imitate the natural habitat conditions... those geckos are 3-7 (or more) generations removed from the wild... a little humidity won't make them spontaneously combust... and also just because they CAN survive in different climates doesn't mean they will thrive there.... it's the same principle as a Betta fish in a glass... they will survive but not particularly great
@terraquaman

You make a great point! While replicating natural habitat conditions can be beneficial, it's true that many reptiles, including leopard geckos, have adapted to captive environments over generations. The goal is often to provide a habitat that supports their well-being and encourages natural behaviors without necessarily mirroring every aspect of the wild. It’s about finding a balance that ensures they thrive. I appreciate your perspective!
