Used to have a tree in my yard. You should have mentioned the coolest/weirdest thing about kumquats compared to other citrus - with kumquats, the peel is the sweeter part and the fruit inside is sour/astringent, which is the opposite of every other type of citrus I've heard of.
Dried kamquat in warm water is amazing for sore throats too! I have to speak quite a lot for work and popping one into my water bottle helps me keep the sore throat at bay~
Had a tree in our yard when I was a child. The skin is actually sweet and the fruit inside is sour. Kind of like a cross between an orange and a lemon.
I haven't had a kumquat since leaving my beloved Los Angeles ten years ago. Oh, how I miss those! Did you happen to notice that the kumquat flesh is tangy, but the kumquat skin is sweet? If you go to Chinatown, they preserve these in big huge glass jars of sugar. Have them scoop some out for you - so delicious to have them that way.
Oh em gee. Our neighbor had a tree when I was a kid. I’d bite off the top and spit it out, then suck out the middle. Sometimes I’d eat the whole thing. They’re so good!!
My town has a kumquat festival every year. We make all kinds of things out of kumquats. My favorite is the kumquat pie. An ice box pie that is sweet but full of the tart fruit giving it a nice balance.
We had a kumquat tree in our yard when I was growing up in Southern California, so I had all I wanted, just for the picking. My mom used to can whole kumquat preserves. I also remember whenever there was a frost warning we'd throw a sheet over the small tree to protect the fruit. My niece brought me some fresh kumquats for Christmas last year and it was like a blast from the past.
We call them "Quinotos" in Argentina and we usually have them as a sweet preserve. You can find Kumquat or Quinoto ice-cream in Argentina and its delicious.
The one in your explanation is nagame kumquat, the round one is marume kumquat which has the same flavor, the one with sweet rind and juice is meiwa kumquat, there are several more kumquat crossbreeds but with tart or sour taste.
Santa gave us them in our stocking every year and I thought they were grown in the north pole my whole childhood. That it was some special Christmas fruit.
Kumquats are more cold hardy than most citrus. I love them, and they do fine in my USDA zone 8b so I am growing 4 different varieties. Some are a little sweeter than the Nagami kumquat which is the main variety found in grocery stores that sell them. I figure they are superfoods, since you do eat them peel and all.
i used to regard them as tinier madarins becuz of the close similarity in the last syllable in their cantonese name. they use the same tone going straight up and sharp, and both appear in chinese new year as theyre both associated with good luck in fortune. only 'quat' vs 'kat': the 'u' +a sound makes 'wa'. just sharing coz i thought they were the same until i was reminded by this vid. it was how i learned cantonese. here, we boil it in salt for a throat soothing drink
Love kumquats! My best friend’s great grandparents were responsible for bringing kumquats to North America in the early 20th century. His parents have a few trees in their yard and will make some amazing kumquat vodka with them 😀
As a child in Texas these were my favorite treat. We'd play outside all day & feast on the figs, pecans, honeysuckle, and kumquats that grew in our yard. The citrus oil from the skin of the kumquat was a great way to freshen up your hands after a day of tree climbing! 😊
What a coincidence Beryl! I just happened to discover a kumquat tree at my local park and I was so excited, I went home to google it to make sure. So many citrus varieties. Finger limes in all their colours are amazing, but I also love Dooja or round lime. Wild orange (capparis mitchelli not osage orange) is another interesting one to check out, it's not even a true citrus.
My mom used to have a kumquat tree in her back yard and loved getting the fruit off the tree and eating them , childhood memories . I kiss those days . 🧡🧡
I love kumquats! I remember last time when I visited an aunt in California she had a kumquat tree in her back yard and I got to try them. I was amazed by the fact that you can eat the peel. For me the best part of the kumquat is the peel, the pulp is a little too tart for me. Also my cousin’s husband prepared a pecan pie with kumquats, it was soooo good, I loved the slightly hint of the orange like flavor that the kumquat gives off.
I use to do private tutoring for lots of Vietnamese kids and one of their mums used to make me freshly squeezed kumquat choice and I never fully appreciated how many of them she had to squeeze in order to make me a large glass full of juice. If only I had have known! Hopefully my gratitude came across back then.
