Tasting 5 heirloom apple varieties in July. The earliest of the early apples to ripen in summer. July Red, Early Harvest, Carolina Red June, Summer Rose and Red Astrachan. A home orchard can have apples over a long season. Summer apples tend to be rather thin, low in sugar and not super flavorful. The very earliest are more so, than later summer apples.

Incredibly useful video and so well done. You really can’t get this kind of super detailed information anywhere else. Keep up the great work!

Great video again, I love the historical references as well!

RU-vid isn't the best place for the historic stuff and descriptions. I'm going to see if I can stay in the habit of putting that stuff on Instagram where it fits better. I have a lot of references on apples clipped out already, as I keep a file for notes, status and research on almost all the apples I have or want. I should prepare ahead more bullet points for the vids though. Like Carolina Red June is said to be well over 200 years old, which is pretty interesting. Planning to put out a post this morning on one of these apples.

Try William's Pride if you haven't. Great early northern selection, though not as early as these.

@@SkillCult Yeah we had some facebook conversations about the orchard I'm doing where there used to be in on in the 1800s. I have some early varieties they are just young stock yet, a few years from producing. I have Williams Pride, Geneva, Pink Pearl, Zestar!, Pristine & some others. Just a fun hobby orchard to keep me busy. I hope your season is great this year, I always enjoy seeing what you have going on!

New to apples, planted several variaties last year. Unfortunately don't think they will produce in time for fall as we have such short season here. Any suggestions for sources of these early ripening apples?

I live in western NC and we have a somewhat prominent apple culture. I’ve never looked too deeply into what was available but I always got a vibe they were more for supermarkets and brewing. At the very least, you’ve piqued my curiosity to investigate as to what kind of growing is going on here. Are there any varieties you know of that I should look out for? Happy to see your diet limitations improving by the way. Maybe that was a bad observation. Also I keep seeing these facebook articles about weaponized ticks and I’m always tempted to ask you about it. Add me on fb if you interested in having a chat sometime. I feel it’s important I’m not just some random weirdo lol. I’m good friends with Ben Scott and a member on the cordwood page.

Yeah, I know who you are :) I've never looked into the weaponized ticks, but it sounds dicey. I don't have any reason to believe it hasn't been around a long time. There is a really cool book called Old Southern Apples. That is the definitive book on that subject. There are a lot. There's probably some specialty growers around that have old varieties.

SkillCult I realized that we’re friends on fb after I commented. oof. Sweet, I have a B&N gift card I need to use. We have large apple festivals around this time of year and I’m sure I’ll be able to find someone in the know. Yea I dunno if I buy it but the fact it’s not bacterium but rather a genetically modified organism makes it a lil spooky. Take care my guy! You know your boy didn’t miss that last snippet at the end ;) looking forward to it.

Thankyou for alll you do. I dont follow you on Instagram. Because im a cheap ass and do not buy apps. I am also not technologically advanced so. I watch what you post on You tube which is sufficient to feed my dreams of one day being a self reliant homesteader. I like what you have to say ALWAYS. Good to see you have not stopped RU-vid. I know they do not pay enough.

Thanks Micah. The instagram app is free. but it doesn't actually work on my phone anymore. I use a desktop app. But II mostly post there. I don't actually spend a lot of time on there. I don't really recommend it if you're not already on there ;)

You should try Irish Peach it's a good early apple with a more complex taste
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 5 лет назад
Thanks. I have it, but it seems to be later so far. It's a very small, unhappy branch though. I might have a bigger branch, but won't know til it ripens. Do you have any other first early apples that I have that it bears with?

@@SkillCult maybe Laxton's Epicure early August for us in Ireland. Bakers delicious is another good one but its more so a second early. I would also recommend getting your hands on a Pitmaston Pineapple, for something unusual.

Where I live we have a lot of White Transparent. It ripens mid July but the old ladies used to pick up the apples that fell from the tree as early as June - when I was a little boy. Today no one cares anymore... Anyhow. White Transparent is a very nice apple. It has a very typical taste and in my opinion makes the best apple sauce.

Everyone here has what they call "june apples", most are small, pretty acidic and hard, everyone here just makes fried apples with them...cant wait till fall!
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 5 лет назад
So are fried apples just in butter or lard, or are they battered?
@MrChickadee
@MrChickadee 5 лет назад
@@SkillCult typically just cored, quartered then fried in a skillet with butter, sometimes some cinn/sugar is added depending on taste. It seems to be the most common way of eating apples here traditionally, as most were not a good desert apple type, everyone fried them, some still do every morning for breakfast year round out of the root cellar. Lots of fruit here that is not what anyone would consider a good desert or frest eating out of hand fruit, apples, peaches berries and pears, all of which you would not want out of hand, but they were either fried, dried, jammed, or pickled. There is a red "indian" peach that is a clingstone, about egg size, which they would pickle in some sweet brine with the seed intact, just taking off the skin. Supposed to be very red and lovely like giant canned cherries? I think Ive only seen one or two actual "out of hand" apples here, the rest was for storing, and the above processes.

Love the rooster crowing in the background. I can never get rooster around here to crow when I'm videoing. Maybe because I rarely get up that early to film. Maybe because there are no roosters within 10 miles of me.

Mine are actually a problem when I'm recording. If I wasn't in the fenced garden he probably would ahve been up in my face. Nice when they are at a distsnce though. The coop is about 30 feet from my bedroom door and he wakes me up a lot. Usually I break somewhere in mid summer and eat the rooster, because I can't take it anymore lol.

I wish we could grow more apple varieties here (zone 10a). I grow Anna, Golden Dorsett successfully and occasionally get Fuji to set fruit. I’d really like to find more varietals to plant.

Just a friendly comment. Those Victorianox Floral Knives are CHEAPER than a Swiss army knife, so they are the economical choice.

Yeah, just not as versatile for other stuff and a lot of people already have pocket knives. They are just a good grafting, orchard and fruit knife though.

Hey Steve I have a question pertaining to the Hide I am tanning. I did the test pieces like you said to and they turned out great. I used fat liquor and mink oil for the finish I liked the best. But I am running into a problem where with the full hide no matter how much I strengthen the solution the hide will deplete it and the solution will go rancid smelling. I am boiling old bark and using that water to boil the new bark (red oak btw) and putting the hide in full strength solutions of that with about 7 batches but the hide just depletes it within days without much noticeable penetration. the solution never goes completely clear but rather a red brown foggy color and tons of mold will grow on top. when I pull out the leather it smells bad but feels fine, not slimy or anything. I have gone through 2 plastic tubs of bark that I chopped (which is of questionable quality because it was from scrap wood at a lumberyard and was probably rained on a few times but was mostly attached to the wood). I am just not sure what I am doing wrong and why it it keeps getting so smelly when my test pieces that I did in mason jars did not get like this. Sorry this is so long but I wanted to be thorough since I can't send pictures or videos through YT chat. Thank you very much for your time.

With so many apples, I assume that you sell a lot of them. Harvesting and selling would be a huge job.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 5 лет назад
I don't usually, but have at times sold at the farmer's market. This is the biggest crop I've ever had. They all come in at random different times, so that spreads it out. I might try selling to neighbors this year, or through local bulletin boards etc.

Interesting to see these earlies. I wonder if you have come across Sweetings - this is often our earliest (12 July) - all over yellow, golf ball sized, and very low acid. This year it will be ready in another 2-3 days - that will take us to 25 July. Not the best flavour in the world, but it tastes of summer - rather like the first new potatoes. I always look forward to them.
@SkillCult

We have various sweetings, but I don't recall one just called sweeting. I'll look into it. It would be good to have a super early that is actually very sweet. Any other super early apples that you like over there?

@@SkillCult Irish Peach is very early and has a much richer flavour (usually ready about the same time). Then there's Norfolk Rattlebox, which is pink fleshed with a strong apple/rose petal scent.
