All solid advice. You follow Patara’s instructions on this and you will get eggs out your ears.

I've raised chickens my entire life, and I never force the girls to lay. I allow them to go thru a rest time, and then come February or so, they begin laying again. They are free range and also get a lot of table scraps!

We used to go to the grain elevators. They would allow us to sweep up all the spillage from loading the trains. It all went into 16 gallon galvanized garbage cans with right fitting lids. Then we filled the cans with water, and stirred. A few days the grains would swell up, then it went to the chickens, and pigs. Along with Table scraps, boiled rice, boiled egg shells, and fruit peels, and cores. Plenty of garden greens. Go to the pet store, and buy crickets. They breed fast. Start a worm farm.

Mike from the Health Ranger has a lab that tests food & feed, etc. He is checking TS’s feed & will post on his site once it’s done. He publicly made the announcement. Wait and see. But be sure to go to his site and read the results. Natural News-

Pine shavings are up to $7.99 at my TC. If you have a sawmill local you can pickup sawdust, I'm able to get a pickup bed full for $10. I've also noticed the pine shavings bags aren't as full as they used to be 🤔

I changed to a 23% feed and within a week my egg production doubled.

We just got our first egg today!!! Sadly we didn’t get it in time. It’s -14 C and -24 with the windchill so it didn’t take long to freeze. However, there’s still some happy dance going on over here!!!

I use an organic feed. I have one girl that’s 10 and she’s still laying. She’s beautiful and sassy. My youngest hen is 4. They took they’re winter break and started laying again 2 weeks ago.

You have a superpower-common sense. It sounds like what you need to have happy and healthy chickens is common sense.

3 of our ladies are laying 1 per day, & we're waiting on the others. My lil' Putty-Tat is a small hen, & gives me a precious little peach-colored egg ea day, smaller than the others. She's my favorite- made her own lil' nest, & she 'sings' whenever I come near bc she loves being held. I love all our birds, but she's truly special:) Chickens are awesome, & I pray more ppl get them!

I get my feed from a local mom/pop feed mill. 24% has everything in it. 50lbs under $15.. it used to be under $10

Regarding the story going round about TS feed, Mike Adams of natural news is testing the feed so he will let us know...my hens just resumed laying after 4 to 6 weeks off...I buy from TS...

I've had eggs all winter and have been keeping my egg customers in eggs. The trick to having winter layers is to have pullets that will start to lay in September and they will continue to lay through winter. My Easter Eggers and Americanas are not young pullets but they continue to lay through winter, although not as much as in Spring and Summer.

Red pepper flakes also help to get the girls in gear. Chickens don't have heat receptors in their mouths, so they love it. I give my girls some around this time of year and garlic to make sure they don't have any parasites. Also dried Lavender in the nesting boxes helps keep the ladies calm.

In the mid-90's, my first husband and I had a Purina dealership in central Arkansas, and I drove to the mill in Shreveport to pick up feed. I was able to watch them test arriving truckloads of grain for protein and moisture content, to see where the feed went through grinders, cookers, pelletizers, and bagging . . . and it was fascinating! To the best of my knowledge, Shreveport is the only Purina mill that produces worm chow and cricket chow . . . in part because some of the largest bait farmers are down in that area! Our store had three cricket farmers that were customers!

I've been telling people about the protein content and also that the feed companies use the cheapest ingredients so they may be lacking in nutrient but many are set on believing that the feed companies are putting something in the feed to make them not lay.

Our 2 year old hens stopped completely for about a month or more. Our 4 pullets never stopped what I was thankful for. Hens have all started back up laying now.

My favorite supplement I like to give when the girls are not up to par is alfalfa hay. They love scratching through and have always had a boost in production. Also by weight cheaper than a lot of options.

Great video! I fed a feed that was a 4.5% crude fat feed over the winter. I compared the label to the controversial label. That feed had only 2.5% crude fat. Birds will stop laying trying to keep warm as well. We all know that the weather is not what we have seen in the past. It's an interesting discussion. My birds maintained their expected laying, but they are birds that are suited to our weather as well.

My girls stopped laying around late November and just started laying again. I think they need that rest time!

Started my chickens on new feed 4 days ago and got my first two eggs last night. Bought 20% layer from local feed mill and finally got eggs!

I use a local feed store for my chickens. I’ve not had any problems and I’m okay with them slowing down in winter.

I have fed the Nature's Best Organic feed to my chickens since I got them as chicks from TSC. I was just looking at (Nature Crest) Tucker Milling because I have always fed the Nature Crest rabbit feed from Tucker Milling to my rabbit and have been wanting to transition away from the big stores for my chickens, too. I haven't had any issues with the organic feed for my girls, but looking to other routes (for feed) right now is paramount. Plus, supporting a local "Mom 'n Pop" feed store is more attractive to me than supporting the big stores that may or may not share my views.

We switched to Tucker and are very satisfied. We were using DuMour and our birds quit laying in September. It wasn’t until we switched after Christmas we finally got eggs again. Blessings Sis💜🙏🏼

We save money on our feed (all animal feeds - chicken, goat, alpaca, pig...) by asking our local feed mill to mix it for us because there's no storage fee. We also began placing a dry feed container at their 24/7 disposal (full feed). In the morning they get fermented feed. Upping their feed has helped with their egg production since in the summer, they supplement their food by grazing and wandering.

I don't currently have a homestead but I plan to have one in the near future. These videos provide great instructions. Thanks!

I love the rooster 🐓 sounds in the background. Miss my farm but the sounds make me happy. I preferred pine shavings too. My farm was in the south and nothing is stinkier than deep bedding in the humid southern summer.

Good video! My poor hens had a horrible molt in the fall and were so naked and poorly! I SWEAR it was the puppy food and something called "egg maker" from the feed store, it's grit with oyster shell in it. Awesome stuff. Feathers grew back abundantly and egg shells are nice and hard again. All my hens are beautiful again and HAPPY. I will ALWAYS keep puppy food or kitten food in the house for my chickie poos!!

I feed an 18%Allflock because it's the cheapest option and I had ducks and a guard goose. It *really* helps my hens when they molt.

I added cat food because my girls went into molt so late and it really helped this year

You are right. Tucker Milling is really good feed. I also give my girls mealworms to up their protein in winter months. You are also right about clean coop. Every time my coop stays dirty for more than a week they quit laying. The moment I clean it they all lay like crazy. They sure do have an attitude! 😂😂😂

This is great how you educate without belittleing. I knew going into winter I would get little to no eggs so last spring I water glassed 20+ doz. I think part of the problem is new chicken people with unrealistic expectations combined with a crazy brutal cold spell early. My girls(13) range in age from 10 mo to 3yrs (I rotate out older birds) and from Nov to last week I got 1 egg every two weeks. I knew they'd slump. I subscribe to the added dry cat food to poultry feed and mix my own feed.

Patera, thank you for putting out a common sense video. I have older girls they go through molt at end of November, then because winter they're on vacation until March. We added more hens to flock in May, they've been laying as usual. I'm using Dumor organic. I haven't seen anything abnormal in them, yet. I can't demonize a company until I see an abnormal issue. I am limited to where I can buy feed so I go where I can. If and when I see an issue I will deal with it very quickly. Until then I have 200lbs in my feed barrels, worse case scenario I'll add my quail feed and mix. I've just seen so many people scaring the heck out of everyone else. Some conspiracy ideas, for those, why would a company do something to intentionally lose money??

If I see a sale on bologna or hotdogs I pick up a few packs. My chickens love hotdogs and bologna for a treat!

I appreciate your farm sense. I did just change my feed, but I felt like this was normal for 3 year olds in December - January. The ladies are laying again already.

Excellent information. Well thought out and explained. Here's one more thing that can be done. Checking the tag on your feed bags is critical. However, if you aren't getting the results you want, try taking a generous sample of your feed to someone who can analyze it. Just because the tag says it doesnt necessarily make it so. Things can happen when your feed is being mixed and the bags are filled. The ratios can get out of control. Check around and see who can do a quality analysis for you. Call your local county agricultural extension office/agent or local ag college (i.e., Texas A&M) for suggestions. Your veterinarian may be able to offer suggestions as well. We never had a problem with our chicken feed, but did with some of our horse feed. The quality control issues can be eye opening. With horses, a poorly mixed feed can result in a case of colic, founder, or a dead horse. Thanks for letting us share.

A reminder, here in Central IL we just had 2 months of cloudy, overcast, probably less than 10 percent sunshine. Most of our locals are getting very few eggs. Just like we humans, they need sunshine!! We were wondering why we were so tired, exhausted, our get up and go got up and went without us. I finally put it all together when Patera said the chickens need 13 hours of sunshine. That's the problem for humans and chickens!!!

Full red combs on hens means they aren’t laying. Dull small comb means they are in production. Growing up on a farm that was granny’s way of culling for soup. That wife’s tale goes back to my great great grandparents in the 1800s

I am blessed to have hatched and had some mommas go broody. First time not going without fresh eggs!

Also this is when any mites that have been in hiding start breeding like mad..it's worth double checking your birds. Even if you don't see the symptoms so obviously. Mine are about to get fresh DE dusting and will dip legs in oil ( I use used cooking oil which here is usually olive oil)

Happy Birthday, fellow Aquarian! I agree with all you've said. Personally, I just up my bird's protein in the winter as a habit. There just aren't enough bugs in the winter that supplement their protein intake. I don't know this for sure because I buy organic feed, but I could swear that last year the cheap layer feed was minimum 17% and it was 50lbs. Wasn't it? I would check because I kept track of the difference in cost of organic vs conventional. Anyway, just as you suggest I would mix in some non-medicated starter grower if I were having some of the issues I'm hearing about.

Mine love sardines. I give them some twice a month. Pumpkin , sunflower seeds, mealworms, some scratch with wheat. Mine will not eat catfish pellets. Mine started picking up on production. Another great video. ❤️

I miss my girls. We never used supplemental lighting. We figured God made them to need a break from egg laying. We had a lot of older girls. We honored all the eggs they gave us by giving them a clean, warm, and safe home for their lifetime. I was so very blessed to have them and am so sad that I can’t have hens here.

I buy my feed from a local family owned farm store. Last fall I bought up enough layer feed to last me through the winter because of pricing. I also buy scratch feed from them which is a much better blend of grains than the other place you are talking about. I also find I get better potting soil and compost from them too.
