Fun fact: In Dante's Infernum; Ephialtes is one of the traitors mentioned specifically as buried with Lucifer in the ice. With Brutus, Cassius, and Judas Iscariot being chewed on by the 3 heads.

@@nitrokid I didn't say that. The battle of Thermopylae happened in 480 BC. Leonidas fell in battle. There was a memorial stone and now their is a statue.

One interesting thing is that the colors of both this movie and the graphic novel it’s based off of, was inspired by Greek art. There are several scenes that look like they could have jumped off a Greek vase. So in a way this movie was meant to be the movie the Greeks would have made if they had the technology.

The movie is based on the actual of Battle of Thermopylae 480BCE. The 300 were the bodyguard of King Leonidus (spl) and there were still roughly 1300 other Greeks that stayed behind to fight a holding action after the main army retreated to Athens. The flanking of the Greeks by getting behind them using a goat path through the mountains allowed the Persians to win after two days of hard fighting in the pass.

The end is historically accurate, too. "The remaining Spartans were buried by javelin and arrow to a man." Leonidas' body was dismembered and disgraced 😔

The numbers were actually quite a bit higher for the Greeks and lower for the Persians most modern estimates have the Spartans closer to 3000 and the allied Greeks with them numbered somewhere near 10,000 where as the Persians are usually incorrectly (and depicted in the movie) at somewhere near a million+ there actual numbers are estimated to be somewhere in the region of 250,000 to 400,000 which either way is still an impressive stand considering the numerical difference, The goat path is correct and so is the supposed traitor Ephialties but unlike the movie he probably wasnt a deformed person nor was he the son of a Spartan he was supposedly a local land owner who identified closer to the Persians than the Greeks (Plus the gold and riches he could get from supplying the Persians with information)

the spartan currency was lead coins. such was their adherence to the spartan lifestyle. every spartan's house had the same layout. from king to common soldier. the greek helots under control of the spartans did everything needed to maintain a civilization. while all the spartans did was fight. king Lienitis was the one who introduced the concept of one man one vote to politics. every democracy is descended from his concept of self representation.

The battle of Platea the other city states of Greece joined Sparta and defeated the Persians. The estimate of Persians that the 300 faced is anywhere from 75,000 to 250,000 men. They held for 3 days. Epic….

You should watch part 2, it's based on the Battle of Salamis which was a naval battle that was transpiring at the same the time as the battle in this movie. Both battles actually took place during the 2nd Persian invasion attempt into Greece. The Naval battle was actually considered to be the primary battle of the invasion, as well as the more well-known Battle of the two (until recently). It's based on a Athenian named Themistocles as he leads a Naval Fleet made up on a alliance of Greek City States. He was also firstly outnumbered and had to come up with a number before seen strategy to win. Definitely hey interesting story and there are a couple parts where they intertwined together. I recommend watching it

The movie visualizes things in an artistic manner similar to the graphic novel, but it maintains the skeleton and many characters of the true story as far as the narrative goes. What the Spartans (along with some other Greeks) did by staying behind to continue delaying the Persians and building that legend was huge in helping the whole of Greece unite to win the war.

Frequently, movies with very specific pantones are based on graphic novels. In the case of 300, they try to follow (and improve a little with the switch to slow motion) of a graphic novel of the same name, by Frank Miller. The graphic novel itself was based on the real battle of Thermopylae, which halted the Persian attempt to conquer Greece long enough for Greeks to organize and repel the invasion.

Thee battle of thermopalye was long yrs to take place xerces father and the greeks were alrdy at war foe yrs his father darius was imprisoned by them for yrs and died xerces vowed to avenge his father thats thee invasion .. thee last part of the other battle is a yr later battle of plateya which they drove out thee persian in 4th to 5th century a.d

Real story on Spartan training: they did take the boys from their mothers at age seven. They trained them through bullying and hunger. Expected them to use violence oppressing the slaves. But they didn't have to fight a wolf!

Athens never has been nor will ever be my cradle... Why did Plato say "Only mothers should be midwives for they know which infants should be placed on the hill ?" Oh ya some of the upper class there thought it would inspire women to have perfect looking infants hearing and seeing non perfect looking infants expire on the hill. Fun adaption of the Battle. The real battle had 6000 or so Spartans, with some Athenians, holding a small mountain valley pass against Xerxes and his Persian Army.
