although I may not play it, the wandering village stood out to me as truly unique and inspiring. it is so nice to have gems like that come along and break up the monotony.
Hi brednbudder, and thank you for the comment. I am also glad games as original as Wandering village are in development by brave and inspired Indie dev teams. Should give us great gameplay, Demo was amazing and fun.
I actually LOVE Ancient Cities! :) It's recently had quite a lot of updates and the developers are taking player feedback into account quite a lot I feel. I really enjoy playing it. :)
I love the vibe and the setting of Ancient Cities too. More immersive than Dawn of Man... But the game is still in Early Access and really lacks content, details, and deep gameplay right now. Like if they could add more crafting tools, buildings, animals, predators, trading, fighting, wars...just like how life from Stone Age was...That would be one hell of a game.
@perafilozof Games aren't developed overnight and Ancient Cities is already a complex one at that. I believe the developer is genuinely passionate about it. In my opinion that counts for something too. Just like with Manor Lords it takes time but I have hope.
After watching the list of games here, it leaves me with a feeling to revisit categorisation. I felt that Banished-like, Frost-Punk like, Rimworld-Like, Factorio-like, Anno-like, Tropico-like, Simcity-like etc need to be evaluated. I'm going to use Steam's labels as a reference because Steam is an ubiquitous platform. According to Steam, most of these games are listed with one or more labels: Colony-Sim, Survival, City-Building, Business Management etc. Naturally many of the games we play today and will be playing have branched out or inspired from popular games we know: Sims, Simcity, City Skylines, Anno, Tropico, and Settlers. These were games released during the 2000s. By the 2010s the release of Minecraft was a total game changer. It was a Sims like game with city building elements. Then came along Banished, which expanded city building with a bit of Sims like elements, closely resembling Minecraft. This spawned many Banished like games. Then came along Factorio and Rimworld. I would call Factorio as inspired by Minecraft or a Minecraft derivative because it is just like Minecraft without additional players. Even as multiplayer has been added recently in Factorio, playing Singleplayer is the meta. On the otherhand Rimworld is very much a hybridisation of Banished and Minecraft. And so spawned Rimworld like games. Then we saw the arrival of Frostpunk, which is very much like Banished, and nothing like Minecraft, Factorio, Sims, Simcity/City Skylines or Rimworld. And so started the trend of Frostpunk like games. It kind of becomes challenging to define what makes a game Banished like versus Frostpunk like, Rimworld like, Anno like, Tropico like as games continue to hybridise features.
Ah very good topic to start SZ Typetto! Good of you to notice and voice this! I had a similar conversation about what separates RTS and RTT games and even some real time 4X games. It comes down to gameplay features and the way time and resources are designed. It's true that since let's say 2000 games have become more and more a mixing pot of features and elements. The way you play can for example be very different: Satisfactory vs Factorio, and yet both games are practically the same. You build a base one section at a time and connect it all to make products. Only the way is different one is top down the other first person. This kid of game development is definitely braking down genre boundaries and I honestly consider that one of the greatest advancements in game development since 3D. I actually have a video on my to do list which will target this topic.
@@perafilozof , there's resonance in our ideas here. I'm dropping you a message to explore which insights can add the most value. As there's certainly plenty of historicity and recent developments, both intertwined. Yet fine combing the most meaningful pieces of information without losing the meta will make the video enjoyable.

Great video really appreciate your time and effort to make it!! Another game i'm really enjoying atm is Manor Lords. Almost exactly the same as Banished ( which I love to death) but also includes real time battle which has a very similar army unit control and feel as a total war battle. It's still in development atm, and it was created by the solo developer Greg Styczeń of Slavic Magic. It's still not finished and has limited tech development atm but still very playable as it is. Highly recommend!!
Hello and thanks for the comment, praise and recommendation. If you look at some of my latest videos you will see that I have made three about Manor Lords :)
Such an extensive list that I'm surprised you missed Manor Lords. It's very early access but shows promise for realism of simulation. Otherwise my favorites on this list is Ostriv, just because it finally breaks the pattern of grids.
Not exactly missed as much as left for a future video as it is not out and we still haven't seen the full gameplay to know what kind of a game genre to put it in.
Foundation reminds me a lot of an old lesser known, but rather good game called Medieval Lords: Build Defend Expand. It also had some object manipulation features and allowed for some really nice looking medieval village building. Kind of want to play it again after looking at some screenshots. It did have a few quirks getting it to run even on Win7 iirc, but installing wasn't too difficult. I don't think it's available on any game clients, so physical media might be the only way to go. Great list! Nothing compares to Banished though in my opinion. Really wish the dev would have kept working on it... But still nice that it has so many mods. Sending settlers on expeditions would be an awesome feature for it. I think Farthest Frontier is the one I'm looking forward to most. Besides that, I'll stick to games in the Settlers series.
Hi and welcome to my channel. Thank you for the comment and feedback. You can already buy Farthest Frontier while I would suggest you look into Pioneers of Pagonia, demo of which I have covered here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ff7er1A0AHg.html Banished's dev is slowly working on a new similar game. But as you said, mods are really good for it. Medieval Lords: Build Defend Expand doesn't sound familiar. I must look into that.

Hello Mr Cnett and thank you for sharing your pick of Banished successors! I took a look at Land of the Vikings, but I must admit it didn't look very flushed out to me. I guess it just needs more time in EA to climb up the quality levels. What else do you play these days?
Someday I wish for a game as intense, hardcore and beautiful as FrostPunk but in the style of zombies. Something like the movie 28 Weeks later... I can only dream.

I am glad you found several games on this list you are looking forward to playing. I also want to see what exactly these underwater ones will play out. Until next time don!
I like Ostriv, but unfortunately, I encountered a critical bug that makes it impossible to enjoy the game. I will wait for the next updates and hope that they will somehow fix the situation.
@@perafilozof Not sure how similar the game is... but I'm just playing through Frostpunk for the second time. This time I want to get all achievements for the game. I love the atmosphere of this game, the style. But the game has a lot of limitations in construction and it is difficult to create a really aesthetically attractive city here. A sequel is coming out soon, and judging by the trainers, the developers focused on the atmosphere and events, and not on the urban planning elements. Which is generally expected.
Hi again. That is correct, the city building part is only a stage for the story and drama of Frostpunk so it is a rather different and almost unique game. The sequel is going to sell like hotcakes as long as there are not big technical issues at launch

ok i have played all games from Endzone to Farthest Frontier.... and i have to say, for me, the number 1 and 2 are Planetbase and surviving the aftermath. Planetbase is a very short game, but the way you have to care about people and the missions are good. very simple and entertatining... Survivng the aftermath was good because it has 2 modes the city building and the wxploring mode where you have some kind of melee combat... all other games are good but...is just that it lacks of fun...there are not real random situations except the usual bear or wolf coming at your base...so as the time goes by it becamoes a little bit boring...
Hi Raul, and thank you kindly for sharing your experience and likes for this games. Did you see the new expansion for StA? Looks like a nice amount of content. I do agree the two gameplay layers really help it stand out and make it more fun. I finished it once, started a few times, and I didn't even own the expansion. Having played the first and not the second I would say both, but in different stages of gameplay. Endzone has less end game and you can get so big it becomes repetative to defend against new attacks and expand more. On the other hand it also has a lot of options to make your game very hard to begin with. Same can be said about FF but as I said I don't have first hand experience to be sure.

@@eivorygaming4484 ok, I understand it now, but since I have played the Sims, and Survival games, and with so much to do, you would be able to play maybe at max 3 in game days in one several hour sitting with the game. @@perafilozof Where do I begin? There is just a lack of variety in every aspect of the game. You only have a few circular dome types to choose from. There is almost no technological progression. There is no colonist lifecycle and no colonist specialization. There are no bridges for the corridors between domes which severely restricts the placement of your airlocks and forces colonists to take long paths from between certain points. The variety of natural disasters is small. There are no factions to choose from. There is no exploration and no resource harvesting from the map. I could go on...
@@SnoopyDaniels All valid points. But do remember the size of the studio making that game compared to the studio working on Surviving Mars and they had a major publisher behind them. As long as the price mirrors those differences I would say it matches what you can expect from it.

Banished is a legend. Further Frontiers is great game, too bad it's only available on Steam... Dawn of Man is good, but loses grip the more you play. At least when I played few years ago. Same with Endzone, but looks like it got tons of new content since I last played. Looking forward for new project from Basished creator, but as solo creator it will be hard to pull out second time...

As you said banished is a legend. Further frontiers is the one I got into a few months ago and It has surprised me, because I want to come back to it and see how it develops and it's the closest to banished while also having something I sometimes wish banished had for a while: people trying to robe you and you having to defend your village.

You are missing, Mannor Lords and Songs of Syx, the latter I have been playing loads of recently, I keep writing and re-writing my own one of these, I registered the domain Barbarian Frontier in 2008 and have built about 5 distinct versions of my own survival city builder, after playing Children of the Nile, I wanted to explore something that followed individuals with money and wants and needs, kinda how Ostiv has done it, so rather than a communist system, you can create either a more feudal or capitalist system and have worldwide trade and territory control. I keep messing up by also trying to cram multiplayer in where it doesn't really belong, and my latest version is using Unity DOTS which does allow for 100,000 NPCs all doing their own thing on the same map, with jobs and needs, but again I had to go and put multiplayer in as it was fun having armies of 10,000 on each side fighting and still running smoothly with up to 8 players but it kills the original theme, I think its best to stick to NPC raid events.

Hi, Endzone - A World Apart should be. Surviving Mars, Dawn of Man, Kingdoms and Castles and Aven Colony should have versions on the PlayStation store.
Haven't played any of these, only just started trying to get into the genre then I found this fantastic video showcasing most of the popular ones. I've only played Rimworld which is great but I find it too micro managy at times. Looking to try Timberborn and Foundation but not sure if the lack of combat/more disasters will be an issue. Laysara looks amazing.
Hello blueSKies welcome to my channel and thank you kindly for such great feedback. You will enjoy those games, and in fact I have a similar video but full of RimWorld like games some of which don't have as deep management as it does. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9_2Y4cjqxPY.html
No other game out there can generate great stories like Rimworld. Most games are just bland reconstruct-after-disaster loops trying to survive whatever the game throws at you. If you've played Rimworld you know there's really nothing comparable to it (aside from it's Dwarf Fortress inspiration ofc), you feel connected to your pawns and it makes you care for them, THEY are the driving force. Rimworld is just on another level, often ignored due to its 2D graphics. A pity because it's so far ahead of everything else. 9 years after and still going strong, the amount of depth on this game is unbelievable, the base game alone will give you hundreds of hours of enjoyment, not even going to mention mods. Other ones of note, Stranded Alien Dawn feels half-baked style over substance, Clanfolk is a okay-ish no-combat derivative, Going Medieval has a very good foundation and the potential to be awesome, Norfolk I'll be keeping a close look on because it's looks really promising.
Hi, welcome to my channel and thank you kindly for sharing your view on all these games. Especially for the Rimworld praise. I do agree totally with all your points and I hope they one day do the same upgrade like Dwarf Fortress developers and open up a whole new market of players which couldn't get pass the graphics. This one one of the reasons Indie games have so much potential because they are free to try things out and find amazing gameplay combinations. What are you playing now?

Personal opinion alert! Banished is tons of fun for 10 hours until you figure it out, then the difficulty is rather trivial. Banished has been heavily dethroned by Rimworld, the ultimate colony survival game.
That is not a bad take. It can be played in a way that the difficulty goes away, but that in my experience depends on two things: how you start and what are the settings for natural events. Somethimes it is much harder other times you can reach a point where you feel like you are done. But, for those who haven't mastered the game, there are plenty of moments where one failure windfalls into a catastrophe. So, I totally agree that on a personal level, many people who have learned it really well consider it now not very difficult. Btw I did a whole list of games like RimWorld , maybe you can tell me what you think about some of the alternatives? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9_2Y4cjqxPY.html

Good point. I did start off from that idea, but felt like there were so many games like those two, that both needed a seperate list. Like the main difference being how individual settlers are much more personalized in Rimwold like games comapred to Banished like games.
Dawn man is NOT Banish like. everyone i saw playing it and saying that clearly had no clue about how that game should be played... i could also noticed the lack of understanding the game mechanics. Dawn of man is such a beautifull unfinished symphony that does not compare with other games

Thing that I hate most is they don't give us any love on the Mac. I mean sure I can just go through Parallels or something but when I can I prefer just to buy a version of a game made to run natively on the Mac. I tend to gravitate to the games that suppose both OS's but there are not many of those in the city builder world.
Hi, I know and understand but it's simply to small of a market. Not worth to the publishers and developers the time it takes. It is unfortunate, but that is how it is. What are you playing right now?
@@perafilozof Currently I am hanging on to Settlement Survival. I was playing Cities Skylines but feel the game has become really long in the tooth. @@perafilozof I agree on Tropico I wont buy another one. I had hopes that 6 would be something great and it was underwhelming. I and ready for Settlement Survival to get an update to fix the issue with too may resources being collected its very bad in that regard. I am over Cities Skylines rolling out all of these DLMs without updating the core game itself to something that is better able to compete against the new players in the game. Some of the mods don't work well and result in errors so I don't feel that approach is the best for a game like that in the long run.
@@jmwdba Cities: Skylines is a Frankenstein. Shallow never finished features supporting a host of tacked on DLCs which in turn are patched by mods. That games only reason for success is because there is no better one at that scale out there. While CS it's self is a shallow broken shell.
The Wandering Village looks like a GAME. I mean, devs are potentially open to whatever ideas, they can implement everything ANY fantasy, but most of them focus on realistic games, just copying the world. Even if they chose to use cartoon graphics, they at least make world to function realistic. Unlike in The Wandering Village, where you build a settlement ON A FREAKING DINOSAUR OR SOMETHING. That's the spirit of early games like Atari, also Nintendo. Games should be games, fantasies. Not a poorly made copy of a real world. Need more games like this.

How does Endzone compare with Surviving the Aftermath? They look much the same. Also, are there any Planetbase/Surviving Mars-like builders that are not based on Mars? I suppose Universim is getting there but I don't like the globe-shaped map: I would like something more realistic, with plenty of choices or options for setting up the planetary environment.
Hi, as for your first question they are not exactly the same because one, Endzone, is on a much bigger scale than the other, STA. Also Surviving the Aftermath has the map for character rpg like exploration and combat while Enzone has the scavenger hunts across it's main map. I would say both have their merits and both are worth playing. As for more Surviving Mars like games there really isn't anything out there yet. And even that one is incomplete. You could check out Per Aspera or Reshaping Mars or Solargene. But they are each different in a lot of ways.

Foundation is a must-have if you enjoy gridless and more organic building. In fact it's ruined a lot of these games for me, I find the grids oppressive.
Damn I played 50% of these games... I guess I'm addicted to this genre lol IMO best game on the list is Timberborn. And the only games I'd advise against are Planetbase & Aven Colony, both monotonous, in addition colonies don't look good.
Hehe, that is totally understandable. I love these kinds of games too, just wish I had more time to play them. Timberborn somehow never clicked for me, I need to give it another chance. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these. Do you play Rimworld like games too? I have a similar list of those: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9_2Y4cjqxPY.html
@@perafilozof Thank you for taking the time to respond :) Timberborn is also a bit of a "factory" game, I can understand it's not for everyone. I'll have a look at the Rimworld-like list, it's my 4th most played game on Steam ^^ Thank you!
No problem, it is my pleasure to talk to my viewers. Have you seen any totally new games which could be better than banished? This list was made a while back.
You wrong about Planetbase. That's a sold addition. It's not about graphics. If you can understand how the ai works, it's a great addition; yes understanding as in it's not great but can be played and very fun. I think most against it cause it's harder than other games of this type. Also, Aven colony is a solid addition as well and has a not bad campaign; cheesy but very playable.
Mostly because that is how players find these games as they are made for the same kind of gameplay. Different settings, resources, or other stuff like that don't really separate them that much. At last that is my view, and you can also find similar text based lists all over the net.
@@perafilozof but just because they are "similar" we gonna called them "banished clones"? If that the case we should call Valorant "CS clone" or call Apex Legends "PUBG clone". Banished it's old and had his prime time. Let other games also grow and not just be a shadow of "and old game that was good" comparison. If you want to "find" these games then use the proper name. City builders, that is what they are.
@@GreenGnoblin I totally get what you are saying, but I am not sure did you notice I only called a section of these games clones. The rest are just games with similar gameplay. I hope you didn't get me wrong on that one.
@@leoss1616 Haha, it happens to those who love games no matter the release date. But it's totally fine, I go back to SimCity 4 , so who am I to say anything.
Put another couple hundred hours into banished again this year. I’ve played some of these but none of them touch banished. I will say surviving mars… I cried the first time I made the rain fall. But I also hadn’t slept in 20+ hrs. Be careful and stay hydrated lol
Hehe, I have spent many late nights with Surviving Mars myself. My wife found me at 4AM more times than I care to admit in front of that game! Thank you for the comment! Lets see what the developer of Banished has in store for his next game.
I'm a bit surprised that a mediocre game like Banished is used as a reference these days, or even considered a pioneer in the genre. The list is good though. It's neat to have these games compared in a short package and on relevant criteria.
Hi Flush Gorgon and thank you for the comment as well as sharing your thoughts on this. It comes down to pure gameplay here. Banished offered simple gameplay with a lot of freedom and lots of failure points while being totally open to moda. Add to that being made by a solo indie developer and you have a perfect storm to make the game very likable by the general gaming audience. I would comapre it's success to the likes of Day Z and the bunch. Doesn't look much, and yet so many enjoyed it.
Nice video, thank you. Why do people like Banished so much over all these other similar games? I only played a little and am a novice in the genre, so maybe not picking up on what it offers that other city builders don't.
Hi, thank you for the compliment and comment. I would say it is a combination of three things: 1) one lone developer making it 2) simple but totally logical and working as intended just like games of the 1990-2000's 3) the pay off when you manage to learn and win the game yourself dispite it not being easy. There are some additional things like mods, cheap game with no dlc, being released when there were no real competitors and so on. Btw you might like some of my other similar videos : ru-vid.com/group/PLRYGjguAn0CETNi54IC0YsVNFtTdd6Ccc
@@perafilozof Thank you. I definitely see the appeal of the "cheap game with no dlc" thing. I can't bring myself to buy certain games like Surviving Mars and Anno 1800 because all the heaps of DLC seems so predatory. I will check out your other videos!
Hi YukiYasha Higurashi thank you for sharing your thoughts on these games. Have you tried Aquaitco during it's playtest? I posted a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2TOgpHKg_PA.html
BTW, do you know of any space colony builders that actually use design concepts that engineers for such projects embrace- like modularity? Planetbase is not it, I'm afraid, too much 'magic building ray' for my taste. I'd like to see a game in which, for example, the landing ship was viable housing, all the essentials came in 'kits' which could be assembled, but to build more of them you would need to set up all the manufacturing capability from things the kits could produce. I'd also like to see such a game that began with mission planning- what, specifically, do you need to take with you for the environment you're going to? What kind of structures can be built with simple local resources? (For instance, a planet with trees has a lot of possibilities lacking in a planet like Mars, where knowing how to build things out of dirt is paramount, so taking bulldozers and excavators in the first wave would be key, whereas the components of a sawmill might be more valuable on a planet with appropriate tree-like species.) If you know of a game like this, please let me know.
Hi again, I am not sure I can think of one exactly like that off the top of my head, but you should check out Solargene, it has some elements that you are looking for. InfraSpace less so, Stardeus is a bit different. Oxygen Not Included is again different than those.
