Today we'll view a wonderful theatrical performance of traditional Chinese opera at the Cantonese Opera Art Museum in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.
Chinese opera is a traditional form of musical theater that incorporates a combination of music, theater, singing, acting, & elaborate costumes. The dialogue of Chinese opera is often punctuated with arias & recitatives, & the actors may sing for parts of the performance. The operas also incorporate other art forms, such as traditional martial arts, dance, acrobatics, & literature, with topics mostly based on Chinese history, mythology, & folklore.
Chinese opera takes various forms within the different Chinese regions, with this performance being of Cantonese opera which originates in Guangzhou (Canton), the tier 1 city & capital of Guangdong province. Cantonese opera is also one of the most representative traditional cultures of Hong Kong, Macau & the wider Guangdong & Guangxi provinces along with their respective diasporas worldwide.
