I love owlbears.... when we did keep on the borderlands, we caught it alive and brought it back. We named it Otis and made it the tavern mascot. Lots of injuries in that tavern after that.

That's a really fun idea! I made the scene pretty creepy and full of dread and when I rolled the Monster Reaction at the beginning of the encounter, I rolled quite poorly so there was no chance of a friendly resolution! But my players do often try to either avoid combat or talk their way out of it. They even spoke at one point of trying to start a "goblin revolution" in the goblin caves!

The Rutterkin sub-plot is most amusing, particularly for the other PC that is mystified by the whole thing. It's little things like that which really add something to a game.

Thank you so much! I am having a lot of fun with it, and I particularly like that this isn't something that would've happened had I tried to script everything beforehand. I never would've thought of that idea! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

Yeah, it totally is. I mentioned that a few times in the video, such as at 05:33 and even more at 09:15. I chat with PDM quite often and he is aware of me adapting his stuff for my daughter's campaign and he comments often on my videos.

Speaking as a player, that is all absolute Dream DM stuff. I really love the focus on story and immersiveness over more mechanical "initiative->roll dice until the bad guys are dead" combat simulation styles I've encountered at some tables. Lucky kids!

Oh yeah! And even if there's but one player who really gets into the combat thing, it's great! I need to work on that a little bit more again. We recently had some fun spell shenanigans in my 5e game coming from players describing some roll results 😅

It's really cool what you did as send off to your players. I could never do something like that ... I have a problem with closure-situations I never watch "finales" of series I really like (Seinfeld, TBBT, etc) nor even I finished Baldur's Gate I&II. I feel real physical pain when things that I really like ends. Kudos to you. Oh, pls, send my best to Mr.Connors : as a hard core Ravenloft fan he was my favorite designer.

Really nice. Im glad to hear how you adapt on the fly, and give consideration to the players ages and life experiences. Dont worry to much about stealing ideas though, as a GM, i steal from everybody and everything for ideas. You could note credit where its due in the vid description with channel links too if you like.😊
@daddyrolleda1
@daddyrolleda1 8 месяцев назад
Yes, I certainly did that in the show notes - every time I make a video that uses Professor Dungeon Master's campaign ideas, I include a link. I also mention it to him on Twitter so he's aware, and he always says, "It's not stealing. It's DM'ing!" Thank you very much for the compliment, and for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it.

I'm so so happy to see this! I just rewatched the last video a few days ago, it's my favorite series of yours... I'm still waiting to see why the bailiff was gone!
@daddyrolleda1
@daddyrolleda1 8 месяцев назад
The bailiff's absence will be revealed in a future video for sure! I tend to procrastinate a bit on these DM Advice videos because I feel like each video should have a specific "hook" or theme, rather than me just recapping what happened during our sessions, and coming up with that theme can be a bit difficult. I'm really glad you enjoy this series - it's actually the reason I started the channel, but for whatever reason, the D&D History videos took off! But lately I've noticed my DM Advice videos are getting more attention, which makes me happy. Thanks again!

I love the idea of a rival NPC party. In my current 5e campaign the PCs were hired by a rich patron to follow clues in a mysterious map. They did a few of these, but occasionally did side quests when it suited them. So I had the patron also hire anotehr rival NPC group to follow the same map, so the PCs were reminded that if they didn't stay on task, these rivals would likely get to the next point before they did. It worked great , and now that the PCs are high level, they hired the rival NPCs as hirelings.

I really appreciate that. I try to do little things like this for my players because I know how important the game is to them for their "scheduled social time" together. None of the girls go to the same school so D&D time is important to them for more than just the game. But when I put time into it, my daughter also does recognize it, and that's another reason I do it - to let her know she's important and worth the effort. Thanks again!

REALLLLLY loved this one. I thought it was super interesting that you are a standing DM! I play online, but when I first started playing/DMing it was for all my childhood friends. I knew the most, so I was running around like a hummingbird describing and being a DM and stuff - but also pointing out "this is your to-hit, here's another thing you can do on your turn" etc. I LOVE the energy and the running around. Of course there's some really great involvement strategies as well... My wife is running a game for girls about age 12-16, and I hear a lot of the same things you are saying. PERSONALLY, I think it would be great to run for a group of girls... Me and my male friends at that age were way more concerned with meta, numbers, better loot, and winning!

Great video and what a great story with a fairytale ending! You truly made their final adventure a memorable one. And kudos to the other contributors for the song and painting. That was icing for the cake! For me I just love the "story" that the players create. Players that just fight and grab treasure are missing out on a big part of the game. And that John Coltrane album is one that I've never come across.

An idea, as asked for @ 42:00 ish: Say Quinn is wanted in connection to the murder of a dryad, from back when Quinn was very young. What ACTUALLY happened was a very innocent accident which caught the dryad on fire, enough to impair her but not enough to kill her. Quinn did the kid thing and ran away, believing her accident with some kind of fire-carrier device seemed a bridge too far to forgive, so a new identity suddenly seemed necessary. What Quinn doesn't know yet is that some actual assassin did the dryad in, and made it look like it was simply Quinn's fault. The truth would be that the assassin was just working with what they had to effect a hit and steal a MacGuffin or the like, without anyone ever knowing an assassin was there; and along came Quinn conveniently. That's the angle I'd try first, anyway.
@gabsgoo7716
@gabsgoo7716 8 месяцев назад
I love the way you handled Cora/Quinn's name and probably would have done the same thing letting the players control exactly how that story plays out. For the reason for the name change, my first thought is maybe there was some kind of a Prince and the Pauper situation? It would make more sense for the cousins to not know about her original name if she actually was swapping with their real cousin, so that was my first thought. Obviously don't know if your daughter would like that idea or not.
@rufuslynks8175
@rufuslynks8175 8 месяцев назад
Having multiple identities is very useful in life. In the most simplistic way it allows for segmenting experiences and expectations of others. Someone once called them modes. I've always considered it "switching on" when it came to work and "switching off" when not at work. Sometimes those distinctions are not so distinct. So having different nicknames can be helpful.

Chuckle. Whem someone puts together notes in different keys tha don't go together is what I call noise. But I think I follow with what you are saying, though not a jazz fan.
@daddyrolleda1
@daddyrolleda1 8 месяцев назад
Yes, I do get what you're saying. There is a style of "free jazz" (Ornette Coleman comes to mind) that I'm not particularly fond of, as it often sounds like each soloist playing their own thing without listening to the rest of the band to create a cohesive piece. In this case, that didn't happen. If you check out the show notes, you'll see a link to a short video (it's like 7 minutes I think) that explains "Giant Steps" much better than I can, and I think it really helps to explain the genius behind this song and why it's so iconic. They also play clips of the song and you're hear that there's no dissonance at all.
@rufuslynks8175
@rufuslynks8175 8 месяцев назад
 @daddyrolleda1 I'll check out that video. Fan of jazz or not. As for similar instances in Rock where it seems the musicians start playing different songs, I recommend Primus. At some point in each song it sounds like the lead guitarist and Clay on Bass each flipped different pages on their stands.

Yes, definitely! If you ever have a chance to watch the first video in the series, I talk a lot about how I'd wanted to run a D&D campaign for my daughter and her friends for years, starting when she was around 7 or 8 years old, but it took stumbling across PDM's Caves of Carnages videos during the early Pandemic lockdowns that finally got me to get off my duff and actually *do* something about it! I credit him often, to the point that we chat semi-frequently on Twitter. He even sent me some cool swag from DungeonCraft! Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
