This is Blondie covering a 1967 song by the Jamaican band "The Paragons." The style is reggae. When she sings "I'm going to be your number one," it could be that she's referring to the first mate, a role on the ship which is second in command. So it's like a marriage proposal: "I'll be your wife."

@@SG-js2qn This cover by Blondie sounds quite identical to the original, there's some brass arrangement and little details non existent in The Paragons version, but it's basically the same song with a woman voice... They such an interesting band I never really can tell whether they British or American. Strange video. Heard the song on radio as a kid but never the video. For some weird reason it has Darth Vader type character but also looks like clips from 1960's rocket launch and even special effects like from 60's. Have no idea what it has to do with the song so it funny in a way. I not know what year but I assume well before MTV video era. Maybe 1979 to 81?
@TattooedTownie
@TattooedTownie 2 года назад
@@shaundgb7367 Blondie started in the 1970s, in NYC. This song was on the album Autoamerican which was 1980. However, The Tide is High, is a cover song. Originally recorded by The Paragons. Blondie is so unique that they have lasted 50 years in an industry known to chew people up and spit them out. Debbie Harry also had some solo work, which was not too bad. Rush Rush makes me laugh, because it really speaks to the early 80s over indulgence of drugs and partying.

@@shaundgb7367 if you're interested in the music scene that birthed Blondie, check out the book "Please Kill Me - the oral, uncensored history of punk" by Leggs McNeil and Gillian McCain It's an amazing read about the NYC punk scene of the 70s. How it started in the 60s with bands like The Velvet Underground, The Doors and the MC5, and grew into something much bigger. The pictures included are a fantastic touch, and they do talk about the connections of punk scenes in LA, London, and Ohio.

2:08 "I'm getting Gwen Stefani/No Doubt 20 years prior..." Exactly. There is a straight line of fashion trend setting front women: with no Deborah Harry there'd be no Madonna. No Madonna and then no Gwen Stefani. 5:17 "They don't make women like Blondie any more." Yeah, no kidding! But here's the thing, besides being heavenly gorgeous, Debbie had real pipes. There are live recordings of her doing various covers (David Bowie's "Heroes" comes to mind) where you really hear how much power and perfect pitch she had.

You guys are just young - just discovering Blondie. I love you taking us along with you on your experience. So I will tell you about my long-time love of Blondie as a group: Gowing up in the 70s and 80s as a white (gay) male, this group just drew me to them. I love basic Punk rock simplicity of the songs, but I always loved Debbie Harry's vocals. Still do. Not lying. This was one of the few groups that was led by a female singer, and I think that's amazing in itself. There was a period in the late 80s early 90 in the anti-disco era where it wasn't considered acceptable for males to like her music, but I still kept the faith. I always loved Debbie Harry. To be honest, Debbie, and Blondie in general, were way ahead of their time, and I think that their music is just as relevant now than it was then. Or moreso. As a group, they were very diverse. They were a punk group headed by a sexy woman that then also introduced rap and reggae into the mix, and opened the doors for so many other people after them.Blondie was a seriously game-changing group. I've always felt that, but I also feel that they are not given their creative due. Blondie as a group is an amazing group. I've always thought that was true, but for a long time during the Ant-Disco Era, the message was that they weren't.Now I understand that that's a bunch of bullshit. The group is amazing. It's diverse. It crosses genres. Yes - all of these things. These guys, and Debbie Harry are amazing, and after thirty years of loving them but kind of sort of apologizing for that- I"m going to stop apologizing. I love this group. They were awesome in the 70s and they are awesome now. ou said it sounds like ska - and it is ska.

Appreciate when others point out things that me, as a non musician, hear. I never think of the drummer being good unless they do a crazy solo. That's not what makes a good drummer. It helps. So as people point out different things in music it helps me appreciate it all more

I liked this song so much when it came out, I went to Bleeker Bob's, in Manhattan , and bought the original 45 on Treasure Isle records. It was a reggae band from Jamaica.

This is indeed ska. It was originally recorded in the 60s by The Paragons, who were from Kingston. Blondies version is a cover.

The singing Doo Wop like in my opinion. The music is kinda ska / island. I checked the original by the Paragons and the singing similar. My guess is the Paragons were influenced by Doo Wop.

Blondie does it all- New wave, Punk, Reggae, Ska, Pop.. Debbie Harry was a Playboy Bunny before becoming lead singer for Blondie.

This song was first recorded by the Paragons, a Jamaican band from the fifties. Island in the Sun, and Yellow Bird were also big songs for them.

Reggae, originally by The Paragons. Reggae is laid back ska, or ska is high-energy reggae... take your pick. For some fun ska, try "Night Boat To Cairo" by Madness, for more reggae try Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier".

Debbie Harry is just the coolest! Her sound, her look, the whole package. Don't try to label Debbie. That is when she will turn around & blow your preconceptions out of whack.

Bands used to put all their efforts into the albums. MTV didn't exist when this came out. TV stations were starting to figure out they could basically get free programming by playing promotional videos that band's put out. Because of that emerging market, bands started just banging together super-quick, super-cheap videos like this. They'd usually just find a few props and wing it for the camera. It didn't matter what it was, just something to get their songs played.
