'Fantasie' in E flat by Camille Saint-Saëns, played on the Cavaillé-Coll organ of Sées Cathedral (France) by Richard McVeigh in August 2018.
Saint-Saens' first published organ work, the Fantasie in E flat major, has proved to be his most popular. The composer first played it in December 1857 at the inauguration of the newly rebuilt organ of Saint-Merry in Paris, where he had been appointed organist in 1853. It is dedicated to Georges Schmidt, then organist of Saint Sulpice. In two parts, the Con moto features an ingenious alternation of chords between two manuals while the Allegro di molto e con fuoco is a spirited march, which introduces a fugato section in the middle and ends with a grand, virtuosic coda.

Beautifully played. Saint-Saens is so orchestral. There is another piece by Saint-Saens which is equally fine, namely the Fantaisie in Db Major (op.101). Many years ago, I heard a recording of it played on the organ of Salisbury Cathedral which I have never forgotten. It made me realise not only the beauty of the composition but also the wonderful sound of the Salisbury organ.

Thank you Richard. It must be 50 years since I heard this! I bought a record of French organ music and really liked it along with Gigout and Daquin.

Another piece I covet! This has been an amazing week of uploads - thank you for recording and sharing this. Truly wonderful - such a colorful and accessible piece (but not easy to play!), with lots of fire in the second half! Tension and excitement continue to build for saturday... :)

We in the USA sometimes describe something that's very well done as being "Smooth as silk," Richard. Such is your performance of this Saint-Saens. I've always loved it and thank you for it. I must find on the map where this Cathedral / City is located.

Great performance! Thank you for this recording. Love those pedal reeds. Straight pedalboards...not too many in the US/Canada (played a few but not too thrilled when I first see the organ has them)... do you find it’s kind of hard to adjust when used to concave pedalboards on these instruments in your experience?

I don’t find it too difficult to adjust, but it takes a few minutes to adjust. The thing is of course, even concaved pedalboards are slightly different from one another so playing any organ takes a moment to adjust 😊
