The "Southern Cross" is a constellation also known as the Crux Constellation that can be viewed from most of the Southern Hemisphere. The four brightest stars within the constellation form a cross pattern. Sailors have relied on the Southern Cross to help in navigating their boats; it appears on the national flags of Australia and New Zealand. The song was written by Stephen Stills with help from Richard Curtis and Michael Curtis. In the CSN boxed set, Stills explained: "The Curtis Brothers brought a wonderful song called 'Seven League Boots,' but it drifted around too much. I rewrote a new set of words and added a different chorus, a story about a long boat trip I took after my divorce. It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds. Once again, I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished it." Since this is based on a song called "Seven League Boots," it bears mentioning that seven-league boots are a common magical artifact which crops up repeatedly in many European folk and fairy tales. They're a pair of boots which allow the wearer to take strides that are seven leagues (21 miles, 33.8 kilometers) long. The same concept of footwear that greatly increases one's traveling speed or stride is adapted into many role-playing and video games. (Songfacts.com)

I'd like to add to this, concerning Black Sabbath's song The Sign of the Southern Cross. My head cannon concerns the original explorers who sought out the lands to the southern hemisphere, and the only guide those ships had was Crux. While that might not have been Dio's original intention for the song, it feels as though it could have been.

Boy, this song really takes me back. Soon after I moved to L.A. from the Midwest, I was working at Graham Nash's recording studio in Hollywood when CSN were making this album. They were my musical idols growing up so the fact that I was there every day with them while they worked on a new album just constantly blew my mind!! I do remember them working on this song in particular because the buzz around the building was that this was everyone's favorite and it would be the first single and they finally recaptured some of the old magic on the choruses. Those were incredibly amazing times for me. Cherished memories, absolutely!

@@jaycorby Oh, believe me, the whole thing was so incredible to me. I mean Stephen drove me home a few times, one day I was just noodling on the office piano when David comes in with his guitar and sat down next to me and we sat there improvising a song together. I was floored, naturally. Twenty years later Graham sent me backstage passes to a CSN show when he should have forgotten I even existed. My then-GF was blown away. Yes, I was amazingly fortunate! Cheers!

my wife and I honeymooned in Aus and the first thing I saw in the night sky. this song flooded into my mind and I got really emotional. it's so unmistakable. my only regret was failing to absorb Uluru. the dances of shadow and light are mesmerizing, and I wanted to feel it close up. that was 30 years ago. I could identify with how an old (you did say walkman) sailor felt something unforgettably moving, enough so that author that comment. I got discharged from the hospital 2 days ago after 4 days in ICU and 4 more on the ward. your words evoked feelings and memories

It's a song about someone getting away after a major break-up in a relationship and coming to terms with the fact. The Southern Cross is a constellation in the southern hemisphere that is the equivalent of the north's Big Dipper/Great Bear and was widely used for navigation. It's shown on the flag of my country (New Zealand) and on that of several other southern countries (Australia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Brazil). The song mentions several Souther Hemisphere Pacific Island locations in the lyrics - Papeete (the capital of Tahiti) and the Marquesas Islands. This was one of CSN's later hits, of a lovely album called "Daylight Again" - it came several years after their "peak period" of songs like "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Marrakesh Express", and "Teach Your Children Well".

All the members of CSN/CSNY are avid sailors in their spare time and have written some great songs based on their sailing experiences. Stephen Stills wrote this one, David Crosby wrote The Lee Shore, Graham Nash wrote Wind On The Water and Neil Young wrote Through My Sails, and there are several others. Crosby once observed that sailing on the ocean was an excellent way of keeping his massive ego in check, pointing out that the ocean allows you maybe two mistakes, and usually only one. As he put it "The ocean never heard of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Or Young. It doesn't give a damn". Note: there is an extra verse to this song at the end of the album version (after the guitar solo, which fades out here). Reactors always have the unenviable choice between the full-length album cut (no video) and the AM radio cut with a great video.

The Southern Cross is the Southern hemispere's version of the north's Big Dipper. Their constellation that contains the "south star" that always stays in the very same spot of the sky, indicating true south, while all of the other stars circle around it, just like our north star does in the northern hemisphere. These are both used by sailors to determine their position on the map.

AAAAGGGHHHHHH NOT THE VIDEO!!!!!! LOL I understand why reactors do it, to see the band and all that BUT videos are always the single version and usually are missing the best parts of the song. You just got robbed of a beautiful intro, 1/2 of the solo, & a INCREDIBLE last verse. It's that last verse that ties the song together and lyrically and poetically the best verse of the song. Sports Front typed it out already but i'll add it too because it's a very important part of the song....... So we cheated and we lied and we tested And we never failed to fail It was the easiest thing to do You will survive being bested Somebody fine Will come along, make me forget about loving you In the Southern Cross Peace

The Southern Cross is the alignment of the stars while out in the ocean better known as the constellation of the southern sky that is centered on four bright stars in a cross-shaped asterism. It lies on the southern end of the Milky Way's visible

CSN came back years later and added a verse to this song. Here's the link to the updated version. It was written by Stephen Stills, Rick Curtis, and Michael Curtis. The song was based on another song written originally by Rick and Michael Curtis under the title "Seven League Boots". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IHL-6cUtZj0.html

The smallest of the known 88 constellations in the Milky Way galaxy, and used in celestial navigation - The Crux, or Southern Cross can only be seen in the southern hemisphere, except briefly in winter north of the equator. Featured in the flags of Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Papua New Guinea because of its importance in maritime navigation, Stephen Stills used it as a metaphor for 'finding one's way' and/or universal healing after he had gone thru a divorce. Sailing on a reach before a following sea is a nice way to be in a sailboat. Pape'ete is the capital of Tahiti, French Polynesia, so he's making for the trades (tradewinds which will carry him southwesterly). The Marquesas Islands are also in French Polynesia, North of The Society Islands (Tahiti) and his boat has 80 feet of waterline, so it's a good size boat(and it's nicely making wake). A noisy bar in Avalon (on Santa Catalina Island, California) is where he tried calling her - which was probably his jumping off point before the long Ocean Transit to Pape'ete. The midnight watch, sometimes called 'the Dog Watch' can be very peaceful and some serous soul-searching can be had, and on one of those he realizes why twice she ran away. You can figure the rest OK, I'll bet. As an old salty dog, this has been one of my favorites since it first came out.

Because of the Souther Cross reference, I'd always thought it was a bay in NZ, but listening more carefully, seems not? Anyone know what the bay is actually called, and where it is? NM - seems to be Papeete Bay, Tahiti, which would put 'The Cross', at best, low on the horizon.

Yeah these ppl are correct. Stills reworked a song called Seven League Boots into this song he said was about sailing the French Polynesian (where the constellation can be easily viewed) to help his healing of a divorce from French singer-songwriter Veronique Sanson. Just a great flowing Acoustic Guitar song. Now YOU know! Lol

Yep! In the Northern Hemisphere (where we are in the US - north of the equator), we have several star constellations that most people know. The Big Dipper (all year long), The Little Dipper, (all year long), Orion (only in winter months), and a few others. If you don't know any of them, you probably spend too little time outdoors at night, or in a place where there's too much light pollution and smog, like in cities. Hard to make out stars in cities, unless maybe you can get up on a rooftop on a clear night There are cell phone apps for newbie astronomers. iPhone has "Star Chart" which is amazing! You launch the app then point your phone at the sky like you're about to take a photo. The sky appears on the app with almost everything labeled! This app is so cool it even works indoors! It shows the positions of stars, constellations, planets, meteors, along with the names of many things. Amazingly enough, it also shows things that are below the horizon, like planets that aren't up yet, but will be soon. If you go outside and look around the sky, you might not recognize anything. Then open "Star Chart" and point it at something that catches your eye. Like maybe an especially bright star. You can then look at your phone to see the name of it. Couldn't be easier! Do this a couple times a week, and you will start to become familiar with what's up there. If you do it for a couple months, you may notice the cycles of the moon, the movement of planets, the stars that are always in the same position (relatively) and the time of day when things rise above the eastern horizon, or set below the western horizon. The beginning of a great hobby! Amaze your friends! Take that special friend out strut your stuff! 😇 Watch for meteorites flashing across the sky (they are FAST!) Lots of possibilities!! Anyway, in the Southern Hemisphere (south of the equator), one of their most familiar and well-known star constellations is the Southern Cross. We can't see it from here in the Northern Hemisphere Anyway, great song!

This has always been my favorite CSN song. Unfortunately, this video cuts the final verse that explains the breakup that inspired this song. It's comforting and uplifting, despite it being about a divorce. The Southern Cross is a guide for sailors, so they don't get lost and Stills uses it ambiguously as a spiritual guide to find yourself if you feel lost in life.

Stephen Stills at the helm of his boat, sailing off to the Southern Hemisphere, where the Southern Cross constellation is visible, and used by navigators to keep on course at night. In the video, left to right, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills. No Neil Young on this one.
