Lex was right, again. It has been said that the song is a Vietnam protest song, and I always believed it was meant to depict a soldier returning home with PTSD. Ian Gillan is one of rock's most skilled vocalists and starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970. Amazingly talented band. 'Lazy' is a great blues rock number. ✌

I will never understand how people think live performances are better than when they recorded at their absolute prime (studio). Inevitably live performances change the song so it never resembles whatsoever the album you bought. A Good 60% of the time I cannot even recognize the live version till they get to the chorus. That is not superior IMHO.
@CliffinAZ
@CliffinAZ 2 года назад
@@menotu000 there are some bands that clearly sound way better live than in the studio. Also, obviously not all live performances are the same-e.g., a band in it’s prime vs. one way past it’s prime. In the case of the Live in Japan performance being referred to, it was from 1972, at a point when Deep Purple was in its absolute prime, particularly in terms of live performances. The guitar solo in that version is amazing, surpassing this one. There’s also a great live version from 1970, the year this song was written (although the soloing in the ‘72 version was more polished). Check out either of those 2 performances and I think you’ll agree that it’s even better live. Deep Purple live was a force of nature when those guys were in their prime. But I love the 1970 version, because it was all footage from one performance, and you can really see how they play it. IMO the live versions have a level of intensity that the studio version doesn’t quite capture. Something important to note is: just because a version of the song is a studio version, does not mean it is the best version. It depends on the song, and how good the particular band is live. There are plenty of cases where live versions of a particular song far surpass the studio version. There can be different reasons for that. One is that the band has a great live sound that they can’t capture in the studio (where instruments are being recorded in isolation). Or in some cases, the song is very newly developed (or even half-baked) when it is first recorded in the studio, and then develops into something much greater as the band gets more comfortable with the song and gets the additional practice playing it.

During the 80s I became a big Deep Purple fan. In the mid-90s I got to see them for the first time. It was in a small venue in Toronto with about 100 people. I was standing less than 20ft from the stage with Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Steve Morse, Roger Glover and Jon Lord right there in front of me. RIP Jon Lord. I saw them 2 more times in the next 10 years in big stadiums including one show where they headlined with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Child in Time is one of my favs from them and to hear them play it live was amazing.

This lineup of Deep Purple was not into drugs. They played too well to be doing that. They also had at least one song from the In Rock album (same as for "Child in Time") called "Into the Fire," which was an anti-drug song. The drug problems didn't start until after Glen Hughes joined (cocaine) and later Tommy Bolin (heroin). After a hiatus, the "Child in Time" lineup reformed and again, no drugs. Booze, yes, but they had that under control.

So they claim. But Blackmore and Gillian both caught Hepatitis B. Gillian claimed it was from mistakenly drinking out of someone else’s Coke bottle. Highly unlikely. Hep B is a BLOOD BORNE pathogen. Also I heard drummer Ian Paice say that the entire band’s drinking was out of control. Especially Gillan’s.I’m not putting Gillan down. This was a Vietnam War protest song, and one of the best rock songs ever. I first remember hearing this on a late night college radio station and thought "wtf, who is this band?" All members are top tier musicians, and their album "Machine Head" is probably their most well known, lots of bangers on there (especially "Highway Star"), and then they've had numerous member changes over the years. Drummer Ian Paice has a RU-vid channel that's pretty cool to watch.

This wasn't a "Vietnam protest song". It was inspired by the "cold war" tensions of the time and war, and inhumanity all that and Vietnam may have figured into it, but Ian Gillan and John Lord have said, it was inspired by the "cold war" and "the mood of the moment".

Not that this band wasn't into drugs. But younger reactors often mention drugs, yet they're more ubiquitous now than then. Drugs were just one example of the 60's and 70's culture being more relaxed and free. But that was precisely because people were breaking away from the tightness of the 50's and we were all chasing fantastic new experiences. Most of those experiences didn't need drugs. The idea that a band couldn't cut loose and access their 'psychedelic,' 'over-the-top' selves feels unlike what I experienced. It's more that people are just so uptight and judgment-prone today, that any time they see any human truly cutting loose, the automatic assumption is that they are an intoxicated human, not a truly free one.

Written in 1969 and played for the first time live at the september 1969 "Concerto For Group And Orchestra" at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Philarmonic Orchestra. Almost 53 years ago and it's still such an impactful song. A pivotal song also from an album that was the divide between flower-power pop-rock and Hard Rock. 1970's "Deep Purple In Rock" was THE album that paved the way for what we today call Heavy Metal. Never again would people speak about rock in the same way they did before. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore changed all that in one solo. Singer Ian Gillan changed all that in a couple of screams. After "Child In Time", people were unable to see the world as it was before... I was nine years old and cried for the first time hearing music. It's an anti war song. The Vietnam era and some such; you know.

This started off as a jazz piece in the early `sixties by Vince Wallace.A Californian group called Orkustra whose members included David LaFlamme and Bobby Beausoleil picked up on it and used for a basis for their own composition Bombay Calling. After Orkustra folded LaFlamme formed a group called It`s a Beautiful Day. Beausoleil ,who was an actor as well as musician , was also an associate of Charles Manson , and had no involvement in It`s a beautiful Day , although LaFlamme included Bombay Calling on IABD`s first album. Deep Purple member Jon Lord heard Bombay Calling whilst listening to IABD`s album,liked it ,and contacted LaFlamme to get his permission to use it as a basis of a Deep Purple track which eventually became Child in Time. I believe LaFlamme still performs today , meanwhile Beausoleil ,whose involvement with the Manson Family became deeper , with tragic consequences , currently resides in a secure establishment in California.

Brad nailed it at the very end...the difference between then and now is that the marketing is better. Today, corporate music confidently tells you what is a hit. Back then, the music industry was constantly trying to play catch up...Child In Time came out of nowhere.

Heard this song for the first time in twister when they start chasing a tornado and Dusty starts playing it over the megaphone in his camper. The solo is insane.

You do not know who the blind man is who shoots wildly, causing collateral damage in the process. From which you as a civilian get better to safety, because once in a rage, he makes no distinctions. The screaming is the echo of the pain of the innocent victims and if you have ever imagined napalm bombs explode near you and machine gun salvos and shrapnel hit next to you, you will understand the chaotic end of the song.

I once heard Ian Gillan say that Deep Purple is essentially an instrumental band, with some vocals thrown in for good measure. This song typifies this.
@sumonjamal1653
@sumonjamal1653 2 года назад
When Ian Gillan (vocals) & Roger Glover (bass) joined Deep Purple in 1969, the band already had 3 studio albums out... They heard the new 'heavy' rock from Led Zeppelin that year, but still recorded a concerto album w/ a symphony orchestra organized by keyboardist Jon Lord. Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) suggested that the band change direction musically and follow Zeppelin's sound... Ian Gillan's high range vocals and Roger Glover's production skills were invaluable in going that route. Deep Purple first released the single 'Black night' in 1970... instant success in the UK. Then, this album 'In Rock' was released, their first 'heavy' rock record... big hit in the UK and Europe. The US still knew Deep Purple from their 1st 3 records... so it took until 1972/'73 for the band to re-establish themselves in America.

This was released in 1970. You should really see the live version. This was from Deep Purple's 4th album In Rock. In 1970, Led Zeppelin released their 3rd album Led Zeppelin III and Black Sabbath released their first two albums -- self titled Black Sabbath and Paranoid. These 3 bands were probably the biggest influences for hard rock and heavy metal.

Late 60's, early 70's were quite the times with the Beatles producing their best work, Stones, Deep Purple, Bowie, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc etc all producing most of their best work with the Vietnam war, Martin Luther King, Racism, the moon landing, Woodstock etc.. as influential feed for their creativities. "They're on some drugs" - Lex 😊 oh yeah 😂

I love both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. But with Zeppelin it's like the band were striding accross the cosmos. Where as Deep Purple were the guys playing the gig around the corner. Both bands brought so much creaivity to music. I wish i could hear Deep Purple for the first time again.

The lead guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore. He is who left Deep Purple to form the band 'Rainbow' with Ronnie James Dio. You should watch the entire Rainbiw concert from 1977, Live in Munich, but start with Rainbow 'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977!! One of Dios greatest vocal performances as well as outstanding guitar from Blackmore. I think you will BOTH love this one. Very bluesy rock with unreal vocals. Enjoy!!

You guys are missing so much not watching the videos of the bands actually playing. Why are other reviewers allowed to watch videos and live performances, some of them don't even pause the videos at all. You guys are the best, why won't you two let you do the same thing as those other reviewers?

Good Choice. Ian Gillian, (lead singer) Was the vocals in the first Broadway production album, Jesus Christ Superstar, 1971. He played the lead, Jesus. Then the Movie came out with another person playing Jesus in 1973. Deep Purple are Icons in the 70's. An acquired taste.

Most of you have it a wrong. It's a Viking lullaby. A death hymn embedded in their culture meant to make their young strong & fearless in the face of adversity, especially in warfare. The keyboard part was hummed almost like a drum effect. It's the spider in time that keeps mankind trapped within his own confines. The screaming is the agony of war. It's the horror of death.
