This was my Dad's favorite song by his favorite band. I remember him tapping his feet to the tune and just getting really happy anytime it came on. This song holds a special place in my heart because of that. Thanks for reacting to it!

This was one of my granny's favorite songs...she jumped on the rock and roll bandwagon really early, much to my grandpa's horror. I remember my grandpa had recently died about this time and this was one of the songs that brought her out of her (justifiable) depression at that point.

Your Dad has (had? condolences if so) excellent taste. Dire Straits is widely recognized for Mark Knopfler's top tier guitar playing and their drumming/rhythm section and rightly so . But give some love for the trebly (Farfisia?) organ and the more subtle lower opening riff (Hammond organ?) that lays down the firm foundation. =//=OldDudesStillRock

Dire Straights was kind of the definition of a blue collar working band. They were truly a working class English band dedicated mainly to the club circuit and small venues throughout much of their career. They didn’t hit it big until fairly late in their existence, and then they blew up meteorically, reaching heights of some of the biggest acts in U.K. music history. But they didn’t seem to let their meteoric fame go to their heads which is what I really admired about them.

For me, watching the sports clips and listening to the verses, it was just persevering through all our little bumps and falls we go through our life but through dedication and work, we find a way to succeed and get by. In the end, it's just the walk through life that we all deal with. There are a lot of great Dire Straits songs to listen to though. Some have been mentioned but I like "Lady Writer" "Ride Across the River" "Why Worry" "Your Latest Trick"(live version) "Industrial Disease" and "Down to the Waterline"

I used this CD to show off my stereo system to everyone. Recorded completely digitally, which at the time for a Pop/Rock album was rare, it's still one of the best recordings I've ever heard. The entire album is a classic, with a wide range of sounds and themes. It's hard to explain, but hearing the sound quality of this disc in 1985 was truly breathtaking.

Mark Knopfler made a a record with Emmy Lou Harris in 2006 entitled All the Roadrunning that is very good. Must listens from that record: Love and Happiness and All the Roadrunning. Both songs showcase these artist's voices perfectly and how well they are together. I will NEVER forget when Dire Straits stormed onto the scene in 1977, the voice and his guitar was so different than anything out there at the time....the sound was an instant addiction! Thank you DS for the 6 studio albums you left us. Great reaction guys, TY.

Mark Knopfler wrote this song to celebrate the street buskers of London, hence the references to "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "What'd I Say," two standards that might be part of a singer's repertoire in the mid-'80s. The music video shown in America took a different approach: it showed sports bloopers. Stephen R. Johnson, a recent graduate of USC Film School, was the director. It was Mark Knopfler's idea to put sports in it, which was intercut with live footage.

If you want to listen to more Dire Straits, I'd recommend "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", and "Telegraph Road", an for some of their earlier, darker stuff, "Six Blade Knife", "News", and "Where Do You Think You're Going". Since the band broken up, the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Mark Knopfler has carried on as a solo artist - of his solo songs, I'd suggest "Baloney Again", "Song for Sony Liston", "I Dug Up a Diamond" (with Emmylou Harris), "Haul Away", "Don't Forget Your Hat", "Radio City Serenade", and "Dream of the Drowned Submariner".

The song is about a busker. "Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies, "Bee Bop a lula" "Baby What I Say"" Funnily enough, although this is the most popular version of the video, it's not the original. The original features a busker in a subway in the UK, "down in the tunnel try'na make it pay". Apparently Mark Knopfler spotted a young busker in a subway in London, facing the wall trying to get some reverb on his guitar. The original cover for the single has that image on it.

It’s about a musician busking in the street trying to find a path to fame and fortune. He’s out there doing the things, putting in the work, doing the walk of life. He’s got that hustle. “Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies, be-bop-alula baby, “What’d I Say?” Here comes Johnny singing “I Got A Woman,” down in the tunnel trynna make it pay. He got the action, he got the motion, oh yeah, the boy can play. Dedication, devotion, turning all the nighttime into the day. He do the song about the good lovin’ woman, he do the song about the knife. He do the walk, the walk of life, yeah he do the walk of life.

The song is about a street musician trying to earn a living playing for money on the streets. Some marketing exec thought it would be fun to insert all the sports clips for the American market since we obviously can't understand a song about real life for a street musician. The original British video actually tells the story of the song.

The song was largely about a guy singing songs in the London Underground (subway) and it made lots of references to classic songs that he would sing. While this is the most famous video for the song, this one was made more for the American market (you will notice that the sports were American sports, while this is a UK based band), the original video which is hard to find is more literal to the song and shows someone playing music in the London Underground.

Just "money for nothing " left and you can get into the really good stuff with less mass appeal. Im just so excited for you to hear all the real gems!

That's how I always interpreted the video: we all stumble, bobble, fall down, or just have things go wrong...but in the end we all have our little victories to celebrate. I also used to watch the sport bloopers shows on TV back then, so it was a fun and feelgood video.

This is such an MTV video. These guys were from England :))) but that was the trick. Great song and a replayable video in those days and you were golden

A common theme in songs by Dire Straits is looking back with nostalgia ... in this case romanticizing the music of 50s-60s era, and earlier. As wiki says... The singer mentioned in the lyrics, "Johnny," is said to perform "down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay," a reference to busking in the subway. The songs he plays are oldies, including "I Got a Woman," "Be-Bop-A-Lula," "What'd I Say," "My Sweet Lovin' Woman," and "Mack the Knife." He also plays talking blues.
