Americans react to UK rap song, the Ghosts of Grenfell Tower. This was a serious song, not one to be taken lightly. It educates people on the issues people are facing in the UK. It's a song detailing a tragic event that happened at the Grenfell Tower.

I remember that night so vividly. I remember all the live videos of people screaming. I remember the woman that threw her child out the window. I randomly remember the singer Adele standing outside the building crying. The only silver lining is that it happened during Ramadan so the local Muslim boys were awake at 1.30am and saw the fire and ran over to wake people up. I'm sure many lives were saved thanks to them.

Reportedly the fire started due to a faulty electrical appliance in one of the apartments. The building was originally designed to contain fire in the section it started; due to that, fire service advice was to stay in your apartment in the event of a fire and not to evacuate. The cladding that was later added - to make the block (housing predominantly lower income families and a large number or immigrants, including refugees and asylum seekers) more aesthetically pleasing for the other residents of the wealthiest Borough of London (in which the block is located) - was not fire proof and caused the fire to spread and rendering the fire safety advice redundant. This (I believe) was highlighted by the local residents to the local council , in addition to many things like faulty fire alarms and other health and safety issues that came up in repeated independent inspections. Firstly raising them years prior. There's currently an investigation into why nothing was done when the questions were raised, and how the cladding (that didn't meet fire regulations) got onto the building in the first place. Who knew? Who ignored it? Who signed it off? This was a atrocious tragedy that occurred due to the neglect from many different parties. I really hope justice will be done for those whose lives were taken and their families.
@bigjus3751

I work for an architectural practice that helped with new recommendations for external cladding on residential blocks like these. The issue wasn't just that the cladding was flammable as lots of external cladding is, its the fact that external fire stops weren't in place between each floor which allowed the fire to rapidly rise up the building externally. In the aftermath of this tragic event this type of cladding is no longer allowed to be specified and buildings above a certain height need to have a sprinkler system in place.

@bigjus3751

@@wackyzack1234 I was just explaining why the fire spread so fast, the lack of fire stops created what was akin to a chemney, had the fire not spread so fast, it would have been easier to contain and put out. Its why the advice was to stay in your flat, as that is usually the safer option while the fire is being put out. As for how the residents died, even in usual fires people usually die from smoke inhalation, rather than the fire itself. There's absolutely no doubt the cladding played it role.

Nailed it on capitalism. Pure savagery. And there are still lots of buildings with the same or similar cladding around the country and the government hasn't gotten round to changing it. Some residents are spending all their money on 24 fire wardens they're having to pay for themselves. Others have had their homes valued at £0 and are unable to move. The most heartbreaking thing is the Grenfell residents group warned about the dangers repeatedly and prophesised, in a blog, that it would take something like this to happen before anyone took notice.

@rufdymond
@rufdymond 3 года назад
To give you an overview, this building is located in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea which is one of the wealthiest parts of London - houses there can sell in this area of the city for over £30M. Grenfelll tower is a building in this area - to make the building more pleasing to look at (for the rich neighbours) the building was re-clad but they did it in cheap material that was highly flammable. People complained for over 2 years about the condition of the building - so many things were not up to modern fire codes. When the building caught fire -the fire spread almost instantly trapping the people in the building. Since the fire all the people involved have passed the buck, the housing department blaming the people who refit the building, and so on. The point here is that when a building like this catches fire, the fire should be contained but because of the way the the building was refitted this didn’t happen. So far 3.5 years later no one has gone to prison, and the people still have had no compensation. You are correct that this basically happen because it was a building that housed poor and immigrant families - although people complained about the building no one cared. In the U.K. there is a crime of corporate manslaughter (usually very hard to prove) hopefully some of these people involved will go to prison for what they did.
@BradAndLex
@BradAndLex 3 года назад
Wow! Corporate manslaughter is exactly what this appears to be! Thank you for the explanation, that sounds like the Beverly Hills of London. How sad and materialistic. They could have used the proper materials even if it was taxpayer funded, do you know if they’ll tear it down? Or is it not being removed because of the ongoing investigation?
@rufdymond
@rufdymond 3 года назад
@@BradAndLex - There has been no decision made - there is an inquiry in progress so nothing will be decided until next year. The building is now covered but yes, its still standing - the sad thing is that those people that are missing will probably never be identified, because the fire was so bad there is simply nothing left to identify. If you didn't catch it in the video, all the people in the video are people from the neighbourhood, some are I think from the actual building but where not there when the building caught fire. There is a video of some fire fighters approaching the building in the fire engine and you can hear one of them say in absolute shock "how is that possible?" - the firefighters knew straight away that what they were looking at should just not have been possible, in a building of this type...the people responsible really need to face justice.

The issue with grenfell is NOT just how the victims were handled, it's the fact that they had been warning the government housing bodies for years about the lack of safety in the building= no fire sprinklers, no fire exits & the 'renovation' of the outside of the building was done using highly flammable materials that were clearly unsafe (and cheap) but because they were working class and mostly immigrants they were ignored and neglected.
@0untamed
@0untamed 3 года назад
Lowkey lived right next to Grenfell Tower, and the people featured in the video are local residents and victims. He also made "Ghosts of Grenfell 2", which was recorded 1 year after this, and covers a bit more of the situation. It was social/council housing for poor working class families. The fire was so bad and spread so fast because of the cladding that was retrofitted to the outside of the building, which was highly flammable. The cladding was installed to make the building look nicer for the rich living near by, as it was in one of the richest areas of London. Additionally, there were no sprinklers, fire extinguishers were unmaintained and didn't work, water pressure wasn't high enough for fire hoses, and even London fire brigade lacked a ladder tall enough to properly fight the fire due to budget cuts, and had to wait hours for one to arrive. The government/councils response to the fire was awful as well, with lack of support for people who lost everything and having to sleep rough. People were still waiting for rehousing years later. Multiple companies and government agencies are to blame IMO, and the inquest is still on going. It still is a big talking point in UK because it epitomises the increasing class divide we have in this country. Also the English translation for the Arabic verse is: "Tell me where I can go, people are burning at the hour of Sahoor, I feel as if I'm in another world".

What I remember from the UK I used to drive by the buildings everyday, but on the news the fire was started by a faulty fridge, but the council cut corners on budgets and put flammable cladding in. 15 minutes the whole structure was on fire and the cladding caused an oven effect the temperature of the fire was so strong some bodies were just ash piles, the fire brigade advised people to stay inside, to this day no one has been charged, I love diversity as a postman I love my fellow friends from different cultures I find people from other walks of life and religions much more beautiful in nature the hospitality they share is, amazing, so I'm all for bringing those guilty of killing the innocent to justice. Grenfell was basically what would be a 'project block' in america but beside a rich area. the government, to save money took a lot of shortcuts and used really cheap and unsafe material which was later the main reason for the deaths of god knows how many people. the padding and the lack of fire exits and fire alarms to name a few things they did. the firebrigade when called took a while to come and the people that were trapped were told to stay in the building basically advising them inti trapping themselves in the blaze. the media and government then underplayed it saying it was a small number of people that died etc.. there was a lot more to it but the government and whoever they used to do works on the building is to blame 100%. those lives basically werent worth much because they werent rich. now its supposeto be going through courts but sadly you know how that goes...

Folks who could have easily escaped were told to stay put by the Emergency Services based on the premise that each apartment was specifically designed to contain a fire. Sadly, the building had been "improved" aesthetically (mainly for the benefit of the wealthy neighbours it overlooked) using flammable cladding, if you can believe such a product even exists. The gap between the original structure and the additional cladding created an ideal conduit for the fire to quickly engulf the tower.

Helps if you do some research on Grenfell. There are documentaries here on RU-vid about it. Residents had been complaining for years about safety issues in the building, including faulty electrics. The local (conservative) authority of Kensington and Chelsea ignored them. What they did instead was put this cladding on the building because wealthy people living in the borough thought the tower was an eyesore. The cladding was purely to pretty it up, no other reason. Make it look nicer for those wealthy residents who didn’t like the look of the tower before. What they never took into account was that the cladding was highly flammable and was already banned in a number of other countries. So when a man’s refrigerator shorted out and caught fire (remember the dodgy electrics), as soon as the fire reached the cladding it spread at a ridiculously rapid rate right up and around the entire tower. Many families on the floors above never got out. I saw the early footage on tv that night and on Twitter I saw people who were in that tower asking people to pray for them. Many of them had been told by the fire department to stay in their homes. Those same people never got out. In the intervening years the UK right wing dominated media has vilified the survivors, spreading bs stories of them demanding mansions and all kinds of lies, turning the sheep against the survivors. Because most of the residents were from ethnic minority groups, it was easier for the media to vilify them, suggest they were illegals or terrorists etc. Typical right wing media. But anyone believing that bs is doing so willingly. Welcome to Brexit Britain!

Grenfell still really hurts for many of us. The Council have millions in the bank and are one of the richest councils in England but they selected cheaper external cladding to increase the insulation for the building. Instead of being resistant to fire the cladding actually worked as an accelerant and should never have passed a safety test. When the cladding ignited it caused the fire to spread up the outside at a rapid rate meaning that the internal fire breaks were useless and the fire brigade didn’t stand a chance.

Extremely flammable cladding attached to the building, approved by the Conservative (govt) local council, at the request of the super-rich residents opposite who wanted it put on because the flat was an "EYE SORE" to them when they saw it out their windows. Govt still refused to acknowledge any blame, prosecute anybody, hold a proper inquiry into it, rehouse any of the victims, find all the missing people, and brush it under the carpet. It is a symptom of a much bigger problem our society has with social inequality, where the rich control society and govt and are basically immune from prosecution, and they don't give a fuck about the poor (especially non-white) people burning to death, or those who barely survived who are unable to get justice.

Dang 😩 that is the biggest problem in 1st world countries I feel like. The inequality and then the government basically working for the rich, that’s a huge problem. They basically equate tax dollars paid to our worth & value as civilians, which is all jacked up
@sorrelis5992

Years later, that same type of cladding is still on a ton of buildings up and down the country & the government won't replace it.
@mjpleusch
@mjpleusch 3 года назад
The cladding was sub par and flammable. The building was clad because the area has lots of rich people moving in and they didn’t want an ugly building in their view. So flammable cladding was installed and one persons fridge failed and it caused this fire. Plenty of non documented people living in the building but does that matter. You are asking the right questions. Here is the answer. Also, no they haven’t changed cladding in other dangerous buildings.
@chief-jayfiji7834
@chief-jayfiji7834 3 года назад
The housing contractors that approved the cladding which was highly flammable,fire authority etc no one has been charged for what happened or taken the blame.Months before this authority they have been taking up with the council that the claddings were dangerous and needed taking down but nothing was done to all the complaints and up until now some are still in hotels etc and still no reparation paid.The public raised £18+ million for the displaced victims etc and only £2 million of which was given to the victims

Also to make it worse I believe the idea with the missing posters is the fact that the official death count is 72 but the people that lived there/around there say there were a lot more then 72 people in the block so where all those other people. Someone correct me if I’m wrong though I’m not 100% sure

Grenfell and several other towers have been insolated with a very flamable agent for cheap insolatation on top of this they did not have a propper emergency exit nor enough fire extinguishers.the people responsible knew this and did not feel obligated to fix it since it would cost them too much money.And i bet it was done for insurance purposes (They claim the fire started from a faulty refrigirator. They are still calling for Justice.😠

3 years on and theyre still in progress of removing the cladding from buildings up and down the country. There are alot of "foreign sounding names" because london is a massive melting pot and even english people will have islamic names. The building was council housing, which is for lower class people and all the problems and illegal things were reported multiple times by the residents but nothing was done. 3 years on and they still havent arrested anybody for the illegal cladding. Alot of families realised they couldnt get out and decided to stay and die together, children refusing to leave their parents/grandparents/siblings. the fire brigade told people to stay in their flats too which led to alot of deaths. They also left alot of the survivors unhoused after the fire. My city has 3 tower blocks of similar size with the flammable cladding and a school and they have only just started removing it before covid hit and they stopped. Its so fucked up as we know the names of rhe companies and people responsible yet they havent faced any consequences.

Unfortunately, like most things, it comes down to money. Sprinklers and better fire proof cladding was recommended but it's always built to the cheapest quote. There should have been people charged with corporate manslaughter over this.
@Tonderai12
@Tonderai12 3 года назад
After this tragedy happened all buildings that had this cheap cladding were meant to change it after a ruling by the government. Well has it happened no...are people still at risk....yes...have there been any more fires to buildings with this type of cladding...yes just last month. People died and authorities still choose to be negligent

The poor people in Britain have more in common with immigrants than they do with the rich and middle class, in America you have the divide between White and Black in the UK its the Rich and Poor. In some cases the poor white people experience racism against them being denied help because they were born white and English. i was homeless for 6 years asked for help many times and told unless i was on heroin or alcoholic im at the bottom of the list, Grenfell had illegal cladding on it to make it look smarter because the rich people didnt like the look of it, when it caught fire the plastic went up like petrol, all the residence were told to stay inside, they could of got out but was told to stay, also the fire exits were locked, i think it was a sacrifice its no secret the Elites practice the dark arts.

This housing is owned by the government. The building burned down because of flammable insulation installed by a company appointed by the government. The building is in one of London’s richest areas. Very sad, all they have done now is cover it up and nothing else.
