Not unique The Human League did it in the 80’s with Don’t You Want me Baby, it’s a great classic 80’s song if you don’t know it. And Brad and Lex have done a reaction to it if you prefer to watch a reaction.
@@justanotherdayinthelife9841 Who are you the vocab police? Wasn’t like I was having a go relax. I was pointing out it had been done before and that they should try the song. 🙄
Brilliant music video. The art work is phenomenal and watching the paint come off of her at the end to show she's fully "out of the picture" is such a brilliant concept.
It is but somehow I never get tired of hearing it. It’s great every single time that I hear it and I’m a person that get tired of songs after not long, but this…
Genius work by Gotye -- Ive learned a lot about him over the years since this song came out-- He is Belgium Australian and is currently living in Brooklyn and is a drummer in a Australian band called The Basics -- He did his solo projects under the name Gotye (his mothers nick name for him ) - His real name is Wouter André "Wally" De Backer and made two absolutely amazing albums in a barn on his parents property by himself (Kimbra is featured only in this one) and is more interested in being creative than being famous - The xylophone bits in the beginning are Baa Baa Black Sheep tune - Yes Its a failed relationship but its because he is mourning the loss of a old love that he couldnt let go of and she didnt stay because no matter how hard she tried he was still thinking about someone else -- He paints himself into the background and she unpaints herself out of his picture -- Brilliant work -- BTW he is working on a new Gotye album and we will see him again! -- A really big favorite song of his for me is Hearts a Mess ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MpN1j8R5lZ8.html The official video is just as creative -- Gotye dosent believe in suing over copyright material so I wish you would react to this gem too !!!! Cant wait to see what he does next
Woah, had no idea about him living in Brooklyn now! I mean, i'm like 2 hours away in Pennsylvania, but that's still cool haha i thought he was still residing in Europe
I know. But Lex doesn’t understand a lot. She annoys me with her ignorance or her pretend ignorance, which sucks because I like him and his reactions so much. She acts like she’s an airhead and I don’t think she really is, so it’s sad that a grown ass woman thinks playing the dumb role is cute.
My ears are strange like that where I have to listen to a song several times before I start to pick up on the full lyrics. Doesn't matter if it's something harder to decipher like metal vocals or something straight and clear like this song. I tend to listen to the melodic notes of the main vocals and harmonies like they are a guitar/keyboard or something flowing along with the rest of the instruments....Paying attention to the lyrics seems to come secondary to listening to the song composition and all the layers. Maybe it's because I play instruments so the sounds themselves are the most important to me....maybe it's my ADHD not allowing me to focus on the words haha. I have talked to other musicians and music listeners who go about listening to music in a similar manner....Hopefully that makes sense, but for me personally that is why I rarely pick up the lyrics on a first/second/third listen.
From what I can tell, he’s saying he never truly felt like the relationship was right, that he felt lonely even when with her, when they broke up he felt relieved but she said they’d stay friends and then ghosted him, changed her number and sent her friends for her belongings (he doesn’t say she was collecting numbers, he says she had her friends collect her records) and wouldn’t talk to him. And he doesn’t understand why when she said they’d stay friends. But then you hear her side and she feels like he mislead her, that he said he was over someone else when he wasn’t and she also felt the disconnect but he always made her feel like it was her fault. That he would do shitty things then twist it to be her fault. At least that’s how she felt, so when they’re over she completely cut him out. It’s basically a toxic relationship between two messed up people and the emotional manipulations and misunderstandings they go through. It’s a cool song because it does show both sides and how both can be both in the wrong and in the right at the same time, yet the song over all sounds almost sweet until you listen to the lyrics.
I think it's more like he's doing going back and forth 'i don't need you i'm fine/you were so much to me how could you' that sometimes happens in a breakup
I don't think there's anything in the song that sounds particularly toxic on the girl's end. The guy claims she said they'd still be friends and that she ghosted him. But that's his claim. He then mentions that she wouldn't get her stuff in person and she changed her number. That's a lot of effort just to ghost an old boyfriend unless he was doing some awful shit. Plus, he makes it sound like he's fine without her her, cool as a cucumber then he's all offended that she seems to have moved on without looking back. He sounds more upset that he is not in control of the situation rather than the actual breakup.
What you wrote, i felt as well when i listened to it for the first time. "Now and then i think of all the times you screwed me over" she definitely had been burned by him. I love this song even though its so sad. Its more real.
I'm grateful to this song for introducing me to the incredibly talented Kimbra. "Good Intent", "Come Into My Head", "Settle Down"...great songs and she's amazing in the videos. She also does an astounding cover of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".
Settle Down is such a great song. I wish Kimbra actually got more play than she did. She kinda hit at the same time as Lorde, and something tells me the industry didn't feel like they needed to promote two quirky New Zealand singers. But damn, her stuff is 🔥🔥🔥. Wish more people knew about her.
Yeah I checked out some of their individual stuff after those came out. He had a couple I liked, her style isn't exactly my taste but I could appreciate that it was done well.
HOW can you have no idea what it's about after the first verse and chorus, lmao. It's so straightforward. Brad as usual pays more attention and gets it :)
Amazing song, I just wish people would stop missunderstanding the point. "I told myself that you were right for me, but felt so lonely in your company, but that was love and it's an ache I still remember " He NEVER actually loved her! He has depression and mental health issues that prevent him from it. She realized this, and left him, now he's crying about a friendship that was never real, when she confronts him about it, he "hides" from the truth, and blames her for being "cold" watch the body language in the video, this is NOT a love song at all, ok I feel better, thanks for the rant space, love you guys 💜
Yep! Being hung up on his previous relationship destroys the current relationship and he will likely go on and do the exact same thing in his next relationship. Her part makes me think he is always stuck in "getting over" his previous relationship.
@@evilfantasy69 yes! Thank you! He says flat out, you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness, and I think that line explains your point perfectly 🕶
It's an easy song to latch on to certain lyrics and ignore the rest. A lot of people can relate to being in a relationship that ends and that person becomes somebody that you used to know. Not seeing the whole picture in the song and not seeing the whole picture in a relationship.
This song was playing constantly back in 2011/12. "You can be addicted to a certain kind of sadness". Is deep truth. There is the comfort in being a victim.
When this song came out it was EVERYWHERE amd everyone was singing no matter what genre of music you liked. Rap, metal, country, christian/gospel music everyone sang this song. Poor Kimbra. I first heard this on the radio and though it was Katy Perry. Then I saw the music video...I still thought it was Katy Perry lol she looks and sounds just like her
I mean, at first I legtimately believed it was some sort of unreleased/rereleased Peter Gabriel song (because imo the chorus sounded so much much like him to me).
This video is great. I love how at the end, she is slowly losing her paint. Until she is eventually no longer part of the “picture.” Someone that he used to know.
The song shows both sides, how both sides feel about it and the paint shows they are both in same picture together then she is painted out of the picture and now they are through with each other. Shes out of the picture, I love this song and love the video , so artistic in meaning
Love this song, and it brings back so many memories - I used to work in the imports & shipping Dept for a UK store. The Imports and Exports Dept. used to sing the Coyte and Kimbra lines when this played on the radio... we shared an office space, and it helped to bring some fun into our working day.
I get the impression she escaped an abusive relationship. He acts hurt, like a narcissist, but there is a reason she cut him off and changed numbers etc.. Like all narcs. should be dealt with.
Actually I got to know this song less than a year ago. Almost everyone I know in person doesn't know it either, so I think is a great song to recommend to people.
Wow I’m surprised you guys have never heard this song. It blew up when it debuted! Such a good melody even my parents loved it and they speak Spanish 😂
This is one of the few music videos where I felt like it was pure art. The song is amazing and such a great collaboration between Gotye and Kimbra. This song really hit me when I was going through a breakup with my fiancé. She has mental issues and it was a long hard battle trying to help her. Her mom passed right before our wedding, and after the funeral she just snapped. But I couldn't reach her, we broke up and she moved back in with her dad. From going from my fiancé to ignoring me, somebody I use to know. It's been about a year now, my heart still hasn't healed.
I consider this to be a _major_ top contender for best contemporary pop song of the 2010s tbh. Incredibly crafted, beautifully written, and perfectly executed. Such an earworm too, i love it Edit: forgot to mention, those HARMONIES. Give me vocals like that any day
Glad someone noticed other things besides just the words. Ninty percent of the common are talking about just the words instead of all the things you mentioned.
There's a band called Walk Off The Earth that did a neat cover of this song where they do all the instrumentation off of one guitar. It's pretty great.
Hey Brad and Lex, you should really check out a solo video by Kimbra (the female singer in the video). She’s a fantastic singer and songwriter and her songs generally have very cool unique grooves and vocal harmonies.
It's familiar because it was probably the most overplayed song 10 years ago. It even was the Billboard #1 song that year (2012). It's familiar because you heard it even if you weren't trying to hear it. That being said, it's still a great song. Also, from what I understand, Gotye is a one hit wonder and there are memes about how he is now somebody that we used to know.
I remember when they won song of the year ,they could care less ,Prince handed them award ,and they were freaked out ,couldn't believe they were standing next to him
This song was released in 2011 and was very, very, very popular for quite a few years. Everybody and their brother wanted to copy it or had their own version out. Love Gotye. Can't wait for his new album.
When I first heard this song I thought it must have been a cover of a Police song. Because it had the beat and lyric inflection of many of their songs.
I love this song so much. Both those artists are highly underrated, at least in the states. Hearts a Mess by Gotye and Plain Gold Ring studio sessions by Kimbra are other great ones.
Love Kimbra's vocal work on this. I had bought this album and was surprised at how good the tracks were on it. Very creative pieces. I buy random stuff all the time hunting for the next great tunes. His vocals in the chorus on this reminds me of Sting.
When I first heard this song I thought it was Sting. I was wondering how after all these years he could make a great song. Then I found out who really sang it.
This is probably the most covered song ever. This is the song "pentatonix" first covered that launched them to fame. Along with the Canadian band "walk off the earth" 5 people one guitar..very cool cover..
To me it's that point in the relationship where you're so angry about what they did to you, you stop acknowledging what you did to them. Totally agree with Lex at that point you're just talking past each other. You can't even hear what they're saying. Then 6 weeks after they're out of the picture, you finally calm down and start to realize all the places where you were a jerk. Then you just feel like shit.
I always thought of sting but now you have said Gabriel I hear that 🤣🤣 I'm guessing they all use a similar voice manipulation method as I've never thought that they really had a voice that could sound like that. Maybe I'm wrong but it has never really sounded natural to me.
Loved this song when it came out. A great artistic arrangement. Never really understood it on a super deep level, but it seems to connect with those of us who've ever been involved in a unresolved breakup.
This is an amazing pop song that with would sit comfortably next to a lot of the 60s pop rock songs.. a great example of pop music with real depth and creativity. I love the building of layers.
I’ve been in this EXACT relationship. This is a Narcissist Abuser that she had to cut off to protect herself. He hurt her over and over and over and was never sorry. So she left and had to cut him off completely to protect and save herself from his grasp. You have to cut off a narcissist completely because they know exactly how to manipulate you. Their abuse becomes greater and greater to the point of murder(in some) because they have to have their ego constantly stroked by all around them. Making a person their emotional slave and punching bag is their greatest art. Gaslighting is a precise weapon they can use with a surgeon’s precision. She had to have other people interact and get her stuff. She got out and can never go back. It takes a lot of courage to leave these abusers, because they literally make you believe you are crazy(and your friends and family begin to believe it too) as they gaslight your every action and every move. You become a prisoner that can’t leave because they make you guilty of even breathing. It’s terrible. Mine threatened to off themselves at first, then slowly over time began poisoning me(for real, with pesticides in my food) so I was too sick to leave. Then the real crazy POW style abuse began, and threats of violence and murder against myself and my children if I left. They are out of the picture, and Thank goodness. I would have died if I had stayed. They are called Narcopaths. Listen to the song again with this perspective, it really shows the relationship for what it was. He did a great job of portraying both sides. Love this song
I feel like you guys don't really dig the song. Give it a few listens. It grows on you. This was so huge when it came out. It's actually the first song to sell over 5 million copies in the first six months of it's release. it was a hit all over the world.
We do know why they broke up, that's Kimbra's verse, he always made her feel at fault for the problems of their relationship, and that she always had to read between the lines with him, because he was still hung up on "somebody he used to know."
Monotone? You need to check for goddamn ears lol try singing this song yourself. Also yes, he sang exactly the way he sang the first half as he did the secons half of the song. They were just harmonizing and using dynamics. No added vocals.
I know a guy that dated Kimbra. Now he's just somebody that she used to know. Not a joke. Really. And his new girl would make anyone forget anyone really.
Lex still kills me. She gives no attention to the lyrics and totally focused on the sound while Brad is all in on the words and meaning of every song. Cracks me up " I still don't know what the song is about." Priceless as I swear she is a closet blonde.
What she said was he was hung up on someone else. She was always having to read into everything he said. Basically she got tired of the doubt. But she ended nailing it spot on and cut him off.
the video is good because you see how two people see a relationship. They have different viewpoints. The painting is like a unifier. the relationship. constraining shapes. and as they move apart, the painting vanishes. As he talks about it. the painting grows. Dark colours. mixed with light. so Its a brilliant video. it has SUBTEXT. lots of it.
Gotye actually has a lot of other really good songs that don't seem to get near as much attention as this one, as good as it is. Y'all should definitely check out State Of The Art, it's off the same album and is one of my favorites by him!
I remember a set of songs from Kimbra, the young lady here. She filmed some songs from a studio, wearing a red dress. A number of the songs were interesting but Plain Gold Ring was really good. A cover of a Nina Simone song.
I cant believe you've never heard this song before. I have to admit that when it first came out and became a huge hit I was sick of hearing it, but today it brings back crazy memories.
I love this song with all the highs and lows! The song is about a love that had run it course but the breakup was harsh! He has a hard time accepting she wants nothing to do with him! It’s how you feel in a fresh break because it’s hard to get used to that person not being around!❤️❤️
