His Dad Hank Williams was probably the greatest Country singer of all time, he was also a hard drinker and hell raiser and he died at 29. So when Hank Jr. says he is following a family tradition, that is what he is talking about it.
@keithgraham8588
@keithgraham8588 2 года назад
Only the chorus alludes to that, the rest of the song however is a rebellion song because Jr. liked to mix southern rock with honkey tonk and people in Nashville didn't like it.

Fun fact when they made the movie with George Hamilton playing Hank Williams Sr the crew had Hank Williams Jr sing all of his dad's songs for the movie and had Hamilton lip syncing the songs

Just here to say I was going to say this same thing. :) I guess it's not obvious that Jr is a 2nd person and not the same Hank Williams to folks who don't know. But yeah he's the son of one of the founders of country music and Jr actually helped to push country into a new era (that folks where uncomfortable with and therefore put pressure on his lifestyle choices).

But to grown folk when jr was coming up, his music and behavior were wild, probably was told he's not like his old man all the time, truth was he was exactly like (or even better behaved since he's lived)

Awesome drinking sing-a-long song for sure. This song is also a huge hit at Hanks concerts. Over the years audiences have started their own little chant add ons the the song particularly through the chorus. It typically goes like this: Don’t ask me Hank why do you drink. Audience: To get drunk Hank why do you roll smoke. Audience: to get stoned. Why do you live like the songs that you wrote. Audience: to get laid. The whole crowd will sing loud as they can through the whole song, but experienced Hank Jr concert goers will belt out the add in lines during the chorus.

The family that is questioning him in the song is the Country Music family. Also if you didn’t know Hank nearly died in the 70’s when he fell over 400’ while hiking up in the mountains. At first he wasn’t expected to live. He had a badly fractured skull and his face was badly mangled. That is where his now traditional look comes from with the full beard, sunglasses and hat. He did that to cover all the scars and had to go through quite a few surgeries and a couple of years of physical therapy etc to recover.

In concert, the chorus ALWAYS turns into a call and response with the audience. When Hank sings "Why do you drink" the crowd answers "TO get drunk". And "why do you roll smoke" gets "To get stoned" and "Why must you live out the songs that you wrote" is answered "To get laid" Of course, the same thing happens when a bunch of drunks are sitting around a fire listening to it on a phone. Or so I've heard.

Hank Williams Jr. is the son of Country Music Legend Hank Williams. One of the original bad boys of country music. Between Alcohol and drugs, Sr. Was gone far too soon at 29. Jr. was groomed by his mama to do his daddy's songs from a very early age. Play daddy's songs. Check. Grow up and want to make his own music? Thats what this is about. Until the 90's when technology allowed for it, he had never sung with his daddy. They sliced video together of both Sr. & Jr. Singing There's a tear in my beer. Hank Sr. Died when Junior was only 3. That was special to watch back then

The Country Music industry was on his case at the time he wrote this. There was a lot of clean cut expectations to play the opry. However what Hank JR was saying the very "family" that didnt want him on the opry if he didnt straighten up was doing everything he was just hiding it. It's important to remember the historical weight Hank Jr. was carrying. If you made a pyramid of all the Country & Western stars and songs, his daddy, Hank Sr. would be at the very tip top of that pyramid. Lots of pressure on a young kid who wants to make it in C&W himself. His father, however, was an alcoholic and died one night in the back seat of a car traveling after one of his shows. He was 29, yet is pretty much considered the very top C&W singer-songwriter of all time. Hank Jr. is just carrying on a family tradition...

This is a staple of country music. You can make a bar jump with this one.

They wanted Hank Jr. to keep on singing his Daddy's songs but Hank Jr liked southern rock too, he was friends with Lynyrd Skynyrd back in the day.

His father, Hank Williams, was known for his excesses as much as his successes. Hank Sr. was such a country music icon that although he died at only 29, his legacy lives on today in country music. Imagin following in those footsteps.

A few years back I was going to a Karaoke bar on weekends and there was a guy that always sang this song and he sounded like and looked a little like Hank. The whole bar would join in on the chorus. I miss those days.

I grew up in a rural east Alabama county and wasn't alot to do round here but hunt, fish, go to bonfires or ride dirt roads all night drinking beer and listening to alot of Hank Williams Jr, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and basically any of the so called Outlaw country music singers that basically sang about the very way of life we all lived, alot of us could relate to this type of music and we didn't need to be in big crowds or cities to have a damn good time and just enjoy our lives, didn't see many cops out on those dirt roads just other people doing the same thing we were
