When he went solo and broke up with Creedence Clearwater Revival his old record label sued him for sounding like CCR on his solo release album. He won the case. The judge told the label that you can't sue a man for sounding like himself. LoL

I got the impression that Fogerty is doing some more Cajun myth stuff here. In stories I've read this kind of character might be a "conjure man," sort of like a bayou sorcerer that you don't want to mess with because he's got powers.....and there's no way anybody can up to him and nobody knows what he's there for or what he will do next. You'd best just hide or run away because "He got the voice that speak in riddles, he got the eye as black as coal"....and "He shake the thunder from the mountains, he shake the lightnin' from the sky. He bring a strong man to his beggin' knees, he make a young girl's mama cry....."

When you lived way out in the country…there always seems to be that old man and an old, rundown shack, with a well for fresh water, and traps or crab lines on the river near the beach. At age eleven he was a bit scary, at age fifty it was hard knowing the crusty old man lived and slept in there. The shack was still there, but now had been hauled across the street and was used for storage. And today?

I believe this is the song his brother and former band mates sued him, and prevented him from playing. They said it sounded too much like CCR. Well, in court, he played it for the jury, and he said, of course it does, because "I am CCR". He won the law suit.

The lyrics were very coherent. The video had nothing to do with the meaning of the song. He wasn't with a woman. He's a wizard. "He takes the thunder from the mountain. He takes the lightning from the sky" is not about somebody's dad or boyfriend.

Like many, I'm a huge Fogerty fan. I have all the records, go to all the shows, know all the words, learned to play them all and play them in my band. But if I was ever asked what my favorite Fogerty line is, I might very well choose the line from this one - "He make the river call your lover." So full of dark and unknowable foreboding, without even knowing what he's talking about. Brilliant. I've often wondered if his inspiration for that line is the old hit song by Pat Boone called Moody River, which is a song Fogerty covered on his Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again album. In that song the singer is heartbroken because his lover commits suicide in the Moody River. He blames the river for taking his baby's life, which sounds very much like it might be something that happens after 'he make(s) the river call your lover'. Deep and gloomy lines that could have been referring to the same incident in two different songs. Moody River was a huge hit which has been covered by many artists including Johnny Rivers, Johnny Burnette and Frank Sinatra. It might be worth reacting to - either the Pat Boone or Blue Ridge Rangers version.

As others have mentioned, "The Old Man Down the Road" was involved in a famous court case. John Fogerty had lost the rights to Credence Clearwater's songs to Saul Zaentz, the owner of the record company that first signed CCR. Zaentz sued Fogerty claiming that "The Old Man Down the Road" was a plagiarization of CCR's "Run Through the Jungle." Zaentz ultimately lost the case, but parts of it went all the way to the US Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that Zaentz was liable for Fogerty's legal costs, so Fogerty did not lose any money over the legal action.
