There's a moment in the live performance when he takes a deep breath and he opens his eyes and has this deathly stare for a split second, freaking chills me to the core every time I see it......🤘😶🤘

Ya that moment is one of those brutally beautiful things.. you could always hear the pain in him thru his voice, but this performance gave the perfect vision of it all as well.. just how much he poured himself into the music, and that wasn’t even a Nirvana song, he just loves music and feels it so deep… that part, with the breath, pause and look is just chilling.. and hindsight makes it haunting knowing what was to come next… you could tell he was tired and exhausted, old soul for sure I believe…

@@antivanti Yup. It's actually two songs combined. The Longest Train and In the Pines. Authorship of both songs is unknown and were sung for many years before Bill Munroe or Lead Belly recorded their versions in the 40s and 50s... The song as it is in this combined or conjoined state also has more than one name... Just before this song, on the album and when they recorded it, Kurt joked about how he had asked David Geffen to buy Lead Belly's guitar for him.

People say this was originally by Lead Belly, but it actually goes back even further than the 1940's, to before audio recordings. The original writer is unknown but it goes as far back as the mid-late 1800's. It was sung in various forms, under different titles, "Black Girl", "In the Pines", "My Girl", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", etc. The version Nirvana did was probably mostly influenced by one of Lead Belly's versions.

Dude, I sound checked, drunkenly, for the Toadies at 18 in Louisiana and tryed to to help the Burden Brothers get into a club in Minnesota when the doors were locked and they needed to get in for sound check. That was weird, seeing BB for the first time in all their leather and makeup.

This is a cover of a classic blues song by Lead Belly. The Seattle grunge boys were really bringing back the blues when you look at the music timeline. The hedonism of the 80s followed by this grunge music that was emotional and earnest like the blues. This is also the first time I really agree with one of Lex's analogies. He hella sounds like a Coke! When I drink a coke I feel like I have some Kurt in my throat. Not in that way!

What I loved about this whole set is his voice has this back and forth sawing quality and even when his choking out those scratchy notes he's still got that back and forth flow

"vocal fry" is what it's called. Cobain spent a LOT of time getting that technique down. It's interesting to listen to his demo recordings from about age 18 up to around 22-23 when he really started nailing it. Apparently it was a really big deal for him to get his voice exactly how he wanted it to be - it was definitely purposeful.

So to clear up your "what is grunge" debate. The bands that all came out of Seattle area knew each other and had this dirty, muddy sound and began to be known as "grunge." But record labels began to use it to market any similar sounding band which people did not like. Turning something organic into something manufactured. Completely not in line with the feeling of "grunge" Hence the debate, is something "grunge" or alt rock. Well depends who you ask.

from what i recall, the bands themselves weren't calling it grunge. They were calling themselves rock bands. The "Grunge" term was purely by record label execs who slapped it everywhere and gave it the name. Grunge was still alternative and each band had something going for it. Alice in Chains has some metal to me, Nirvana was punk, etc.

The juxtaposition of the song going eerily quiet then loud is really well done. I like how the instruments slow down then stop entirely and Kurt goes solo on the vocals until Dave comes in and then Kurt just belts out his soul.

I love seeing newer generations enjoy these music gems just like I did. This song is a masterpiece of music driving a foreboding feeling about the story, and there really are very few lyrics that never directly state what bizarre tragedy occurred, but the music pushes you to understand that this should be taken in a dramatic fashion. Brilliant.

This falls into the Southern Gothic genre, though it's sometimes referred to as black country. So you're not far wrong Brad, when you asked, 'is this country'? S G goes way back to Mark Twain times. Lyrics contain a dark romanticism, aimless violence and fantastic nightmare, as one author put it. When Brad said it had a feel of pain and suffering to it, in some ways literally so. I think it's poignant, as this was performed in late '93, barely 5 months later, Cobain sadly passed away. I love how you both come at a song from different angles, and come together with the same conclusions. Great stuff! 👍👏👏👏

it's called the blues and it's a type of folk music. Country came after the blues and without the blues we wouldn't have country, rock and r&b. The blues is the first original American art form from which other types of american music spawned from

I had a close friend from school...a guitarist...lived in Fla...had some issues...alcohol, mainly...he was homeless. He loved Kurt. Idolized him. As soon as he could, late 40s, he went to Seattle just to sit on Kurts bench. He was robbed and stabbed. Died there. Probably right where he wanted to be. I do miss him though. Rest in Power, Jeff!
