@bluetorchful

David Allan Coe was the first to record the song in 1981. Two years later, “Tennessee Whiskey” was a hit for the late, great George Jones. Over two decades later, Stapleton put his stamp on the classic by infusing elements of soul and R&B into his country roots. If you guys like this then you would like "Human" by rag and Bone Man, and "Way Down We Go" by Kaleo.

Coe and Co. took the Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind” song and basically wrote new lyrics to it and tweeted a few other elements, but prior to Chris doing Tennessee Whiskey, I do t think the prior versions had the same kind of cry, wail and raw emotion to the way Etta James sung it. My guess is Chris knew the roots of it all.

The whole song is about a guy who turns the alcohol because of being lonely and finally meeting a woman that replaces bad alcohol in his life. So he's saying to the woman that she's just as smooth as Tennessee whiskey, just as sweet as strawberry wine, and as warm as a glass of Brandy. He's also telling her that her love stopped him from reaching for the bottle.

Oh, also, the reason, so many non country fans don't feel like this is country, is because it's really not. Now Chris got his start in Nashville as a songwriter, and has written a tone of hits, for big big country names, but also for lots of other stars and genres. One of his big influences growing up, besides country, was the blues, (they both split from Bluegrass music, so there are some similarities in their roots). He loves Etta James, and while the original Tennessee Whisky was much more twangy, Chris made it bluesy on purpose. Him and his band used to do it live before he put out his debut album, it's almost note for note "I'd rather go Blind", by....guess who? Yup, Ms James. It became so popular at his shows, his wife talked him into putting in on his debut album.

Song was written by George Jones. He was an alcoholic until he met his last wife. It was a dedication to her for turning his life around

CHris was a musician and songwriter. He had written several songs and was trying to find someone to record a demo for him b/c he did not like singing. His wife encouraged him to sing ore b/c she lvoed his voice so much but He was not confident in it at all. as wives often do she convinced him to record the demo's to send out and here we are. He continues to credit his wfe for having a singing career. and lets just say a big "thank you" to Mrs. Morgane Stapleton b/c If she hadn't stayed on him... man would we be missin out!

He took the words of Tennessee Whiskey made popular in the 80s by George Jones/David Alan Coe, but changed the melody to Etta James I’d Rather Go Blind. So, this version is originally his.
