The Band was incredible. This is from their final concert before they disbanded. Martin Scorsese filmed the concert and made it into the movie, The Last Waltz. It's probably the best concert movie ever. They had an incredible line up of friends joining them on stage to say farewell including The Staple Singers, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and more. The Band was extremely influential and considered one of the greatest rock bands ever. Definitely check out King Harvest (Has Surely Come), their funkiest song, and Chest Fever, with amazing organ from Garth Hudson. The Band is absolutely one of the best!

Absolutely without doubt the most musically talented of ANY group in history with each and every member proficient in several instruments. The drummer Levon Helm was actually the only American in the group with all the other members being from Canada. They played for years backing Ronnie Hawkins and then were Bob Dylans band for several years. Everyone simply referred to the members as "The Band" .........you HAVE to watch The Last Waltz. It is like an audible and visual history of American music.

The Staples Singers, aka, The Staples Family, were a Gospel/R&B/Soul singing group started by Roebuck 'Pops' Staples and his children Cleotha, Pervis, May and Mavis.
@randyfergus8781
@randyfergus8781 Год назад
The Staple Singers were primarily a gospel group consisting of Roebuck "Pop" Staples and his three daughters. Mavis carried most of the vocal load among the sisters and is still performing. The Band are 4 Canadian musicians and Levon Helm playing the drums and singing. They got their big break when they became Bob Dylan's band when he "went electric". This performance is from the documentary "The Last Waltz" commemorating their last time performing as the Band. They invited people who had influenced them throughout the years to join them on stage. Fortunately there was a glitch either the recording of this song live at the show or in even getting the Staples to be there. In either case, Martin Scorsese, who directed the whole thing, wanted the Staples and the Band in the documentary and got them together in a studio with this masterpiece being the result.

Silver dollar city, laugh. Oh my God man this band is so cool and was so beloved. This song and very many others we're just so catchy and became so well known. I swear to God, even nowadays, with people my age and even 20 years younger, you go to a bonfire or a front porch Jam or out in the shed and back for a jam or anything like that, and there are about 30 or 40 songs that are extremely likely to pop up that enough people know that you can just start strumming your acoustic guitars and whatever else to it and then everybody sings it and everybody knows the words. This is one of those. Another huge hit for them that is so beloved is called up on cripple creek. And then another one is The Night They Drove Old Dixie down. It's just so emotional and so memorable it just sticks in your mind. Ophelia was another popular one by them.

A song that's irresistible, to sing along to. This is a call, to share The Weight, by joining with others...a call, for collaboration. It's a fantastic collaboration, so they're leading, by example. The people, who were inspired by Jack Kerouac, to go out, "On The Road", searching for truth, beyond the white picket fences (that may represent wedges between people), had found that there's a lot of emotion, tied to leaving loved ones behind; and then there's the journey, with its pitfalls, basically a rollercoaster of unknown outcomes. Through, facing hurdles, with others who were on their path, they learn valuable lessons, of an experiential nature. (i.e. Though one may have resiliency, in an individual reservoir, when we join with others, there can be more momentum, and inspiration, and sense of purpose, and belonging, due to feedback). In the end, the ride of unknowns, feeds a longing to return to solace, and realization, that it's time for a restoration. That's my take, on this song, at least. The Staples were singing Gospel, and Soul, and the whole country needed, that deep down healing. The Oscar Winning Documentary of the year, "Summer Of Soul", from Director Questlove, of The Roots fame, features a bit of The Staples. Mavis Staples, singing alongside Mahalia Jackson, is not only a piece of music history, it is a piece of the human story. Mavis, literally, takes the load. I think, it's a shining example, of what humans can do for each other, when they respond with empathy. We're all entangled, so it's in our interest, to keep all boats above water. Forward, Humanity! Forward!

LEX, I have noticed you REALLY FEEL THE BLUES when you listen to music, if you get a chance look up Justin Johnson, I thing you will really dig his stuff. no words, its all mostly instrumental. but he has some amazing slide guitar that will liquefy you!!

There are 100 versions of this song, which is over 50 years old now. This performance from 1976 is probably the definitive version. According to Robbie, the writer, when The Staple Singers agreed to do this, Pops Staples insisted only if he could sing the verse he sang.

9 people in this video and only 3 are still alive - guitarist Robbie Robertson 79 y/o, keyboard/sax player Garth Hudson 85 y/o (barely shown in the video, he is on the far, far left) and one of the Staple sisters - Mavis 83 y/o. The amazing thing is that all 3 of them still perform (but not together).

Brad and Lex let me introduce you to Miss Fanny. She was was the owner of a free books for trade bookstore in Canada. Each verse of the song is a different story and you take the load off her and put it right on you the reader. Two members of the band knew of and went to her store often. Take a load off Fanny and put the load right on me.

Beautifully shot - two artists that you might not be thinking about when watching / listening to this are Martin Scorsese and Michael Chapman (cinematographer).

The Staples singers are a different group or band from The Band. The Staples are giants in the soul and gospel world, but The Band draws on the soul and gospel traditions for so much of their music. I mean, there's a reason so many of the Staples family are singing on this song -- it's so easy to render it as a gospel song. It's about being down-and-out and also redemption.

I am a huge, huge fan of The Band (I saw them a few times live as well). But when Mavis Staples comes for this last recording together I still get goosebumps.
