"Who's Next" is one of the top 10 albums of all time. Every track is a certified rock classic: 1. Baba O'Reily 2. Bargain 3. Live Ain't For Keeping 4. My Wife 5. The Song Is Over 6. Gettin' In Tune 7. Going Mobile 8. Behind Blue Eyes 9. Won't Get Fooled Again. Fun fact; Keith Moon is the greatest drummer that ever lived.

This song is actually about the connection between band and audience that sometimes happens on those "magical" nights. That's how Pete often explained it before they did this song on the 2000 tour, which was heavy on the Who's Next material. "One and one don't make two, one and one make one" makes a lot of sense in that context.

The line, "I'd drown an unsung man", means that he would die without ever getting any fame of success. Unsung means not celebrated. So, he's not saying he would kill some random dude. He would do any or all of these things to have her as his woman and even though all of those things are terrible for him, he still considers it to be a minor price to pay because he views having her as the greatest prize and he feels that he is getting the better part of the bargain.

Spacey synths were really cool in 1971, Lex 🙂And it's not about a person -- it's about seeking something larger and more spiritual and unifying. Pete was very much into the writings of spiritual teacher Maher Baba. And a lot songs about "seeking" are usually about something spiritual.

Pete Townshend wrote this as an ode to Meher Baba, who was his spiritual guru. Meher Baba was from India, where he worked with the poor and served as spiritual adviser to Mahatma Gandhi. He developed a worldwide following in the '60s, and died in 1969 at age 75. Townshend believed in his message of enlightenment, which was a big influence on Who songs like "Baba O'Riley" and "See Me, Feel Me." The song is about losing all your material goods for spiritual enlightenment, thus being a "bargain." Roger Daltrey sings most of this, but Townshend sings the part that starts, "I sit looking 'round, I look at my face in the mirror..." The first line of the song, "I'd gladly lose me to find you" is from one of the teachings of Meher Baba. Pete Townshend's lead guitar was played on a vintage Gretsch, a gift from Joe Walsh, who had just formed Barnstorm that same year and would later join the Eagles. (Songfacts.com)

The Who never wrote a happy song in their entire history, yet their musicianship is unreal. Pete can play anything from violin to mouth harp and is just plain brilliant. It is about the relationship with the audience as someone said, but also about finding God. Pete was a spiritual follower of Meher Baba and many songs were written for him and about transcending beyond the duality of life to being one with the universe (singularity) by searching within, so giving up everything for that is ultimate bargain.

Jon Entwistle is often regarded as the best bass player of all time, and he shines on this track. Couple that with Keith's manic drumming, Roger's vocals, and Pete's guitar, vocals (he sings the quiet bridge part), and songwriting, and you have a powerhouse of a song from an incredible band. Oh, and the "drown an unsung man" part means he'd willing to drown *himself* and remain unknown (i.e., be unsung). And while it sounds like it's about a woman, it's as much about trying to connect with an audience as a singer.

It is good to see John Entwhistle's bass playing recognized. He was one of the most inventive and talented bassist, but, I don't thing got the recognition that he deserved.

Entwhistle was usually the number 2 rock bassist behind McCartney in all the Music Polls taken every yr from 1964 to 2000. If not, then top 5. His nick name was "Thunder Fingers"...better than Chris Squire, Billy Cox, Jack Bruce, Bill Wyman, etc. IMHO, he was universally recognized as one of, if not the greatest rock bassist of all-time.

@@brainscott8198 Yes, everything you said is right. I should have been more clear. I was referring to the public not recognizing his talent. Everyone knew the "Crazy" drummer, the singer and Pete Townsend, but you rarely heard of anyone talking about John. He just stood back and did his job to the extreme, and hardly anyone noticed. At least not in my group of people.

It’s not about a girl…. It was his search for enlightenment …. Pete Townsend wrote it as a part of his Lighthouse Project

The line 'I'd drown an unsung man' means that the singer would drown himself as an unsung (beyond notice) man!

Keith Moon is irreproducible, he was unique! One of the best drummers of all time. Bonham was perhaps his biggest fan, Buddy Rich called Townshend "so free to play" (he was reticent to rock drummers), Elvin Jones considered him "all the drummer" and Tony Williams loved his style. How much more can be decided?

Listen to the songs in THIS ORDER. This assembly works so much better, leading off with Gettin in Tune, followed by Going Mobile before ripping into the next 3 songs which are the heart of the album. Won't Get Fooled again clocking in at over 8 minutes belong toward the end but The Song is Over is the perfect ending song leaving you yearning for more and another listen. 1. Gettin In Tune 2. Going Mobile 3. Baba O'Reily 4. Bargain 5. Behind Blue Eyes 6. Live Ain't For Keeping 7. My Wife 8. Won't Get Fooled Again 9. The Song Is Over

I think he meant he'd "drown an unsung man" as in "Drown AS an unsung man", rather than find an unsung man and drown him.
