Tom Petty explained: "That was a song that took a long time to write. Roger McGuinn swears he told me the line - about the waiting being the hardest part - but I think I got the idea from something Janis Joplin said on television. I had the chorus very quickly, but I had a very difficult time piecing together the rest of the song. It's about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true. I've always felt it was an optimistic song."

I almost choked on my drink when Brad mentioned his dream about Tom Petty...it just so happens that in my first ever "lucid" dream I was at an outdoor concert and Petty was performing THIS very song. Not the same dream situation as Brad's, but still, the dream aspect caught me by surprise.

@airgunfun4248
@airgunfun4248 Год назад
I have used drugs and induction videos to try to achieve lucid dreams. I have had two. One I spilled gravy on the coffee table next to where I was asleep and as I was trying to clean it and save some papers I realized it was just a dream. I simply laid back down and went back to ''sleep''. I see your quotation marks around lucid what does that mean? Did you have full consciousness and control? It is probably best I never achieved more in the realm of lucid dreams. I don't like being awake as it is. Living in a dream world would be very addictive. and what if it turned on you and you couldn't ever sleep again normally?
@lindawulfkoenig4907
@lindawulfkoenig4907 Год назад
@@airgunfun4248 Just extremely realistic, as if I was awake and in a parallel universe. Faces in the crowd very distinct, yet no one I knew. Happened during a normal night's sleep. Probably not technically a lucid dream, hence the quotes. :)

One thing about Petty .. as great a singer as he was.. the band that backed him up were just as great.. The Heartbreakers were tight and he had one of the fine lead guitarists in Mike Campbell.. Really can't go wrong with anything he did, some better than others but this was a heavily played song. Fine reaction.. Happy Holidays to all..

Speaking of Tom Petty's house reminds me of one of my favorite stories about a friend, Teresa, who needed a broader perspective on music. She was visiting California and as a big Tom Petty fan she drove to his house, but he wasn't home. She walked around Petty's property snapping pictures when she spotted a man at the mansion next door washing a car in the driveway. She went up to him and told him how she was big fan of Tom Petty and began asking him questions about the rock star. He was very friendly and told her a lot of nice things about his famous neighbor. He was so nice and, as a sort of consolation prize, she asked if she could take a photo with him. He agreed. When she returned to Florida she showed the photo of her arm-in-arm with Tom Petty's neighbor to her then boyfriend. She said, "I couldn't get a picture of Tom Petty, but I got a photo of his neighbor." To which her boyfriend shouted, "Holy shit, that's Ronnie James Dio!" When she showed me the photo, she simply asked, "Do you know who this is?" Of course, I said, "Holy shit, that's Ronnie James Dio!" I often wonder if some Dio fan had the situation reversed and didn't know who Tom Petty was. Nah.
@mikecaetano
@mikecaetano Год назад
Sweet! Dio was a mensch by all accounts. The first concert my folks ever let me to go when I was a young teenager was Black Sabbath on their Heaven and Hell tour when Dio sang for them. My buddies and me showed up early and got front row seats and had a great time. Dio slapped our hands so much as he ran back and forth across the stage during the show that we were tempted to never wash them again. I've held Dio in high regard ever since then, even as I got older and my tastes in music changed. RIP Tom & Ronnie.

Lex nails it AGAIN! Yes, Tom does pitch his voice to the front of his mouth, that way he achieved what is called a mixed voice, which is part chest resonance and part head resonance, so you get the fuller sound of chest voice with the brighter, clearer, edgier, tones of the head voice, and as a bonus, you get better projection.

His lyrics (singing) was very "clipped". He didn't over-carry his notes or riffs. He sang forward because he was a "mouth breather". So there was some nasal overtones (it worked for him) as well. I saw him live in 83. They killed it. He's in my all time favs list.

If you were to listen to the other member of "Mud Crutch", Tom's initial band he took to LA (most are in the Heartbreakers ) Tom was more a bass player and shared vocals with 2 other gentlemen. You can barely tell the difference in their Gainsville- turned- Los Angeles accents. Even when Mike Campbell sings, he has that same twang, and accent that Tom had. I think his voice was just a Florida thing. A mix of Allman's and Eagles, Elvis and Beatles, T & the heartbreakers had their own genre from 1976-2012.

His teeth? Jeez, Lex that's somehow the craziest and most brilliant observation I've ever heard in a song reaction video! And your explanation made me see how you're right. Very insightful! Tom Petty wrote a lot of great rock and roll songs, so I encourage you to experience more of them. He often wrote songs from the perspective of a woman, like "American Girl", and I've heard women say that a certain Tom Petty song made them feel that it was like he wrote the song about them. I also think you'll like "Listen to Her Heart" and "Refugee". These songs are some of his early music, from 1976 to 1980, which is a good place to start. Thanks for the nice reaction. P.S. I had a Tom Petty dream, too! He was very funny, and years ago I dreamed he was my next door neighbor and would come over and tell me jokes.
