In early Van Halen records, Eddie´s guitar is panned hard to one side/headphone, while on the other side/headphone you are hearing only the reverb. It was an intentional production technique. Guitar on one side, then they send it to a plate reverb in a small room and that went to the other side. Bear in mind that if you pan the same guitar on both sides you would end up feeling it in the centre, clashing with the voice. I don´t think in 1978 they recorded music having in mind people with headphones. Back in the day most likely they were thinking in people basting their speakers at home. That is what Brad is hearing when he mentions he feel some unbalance on the guitars.
@module79l28
@module79l28 2 года назад
It was also common in a lot of their early songs to not have the rhythm guitar work playing behind the solos. One can clearly hear only bass and drums in the center and Eddie's solos on the same side he was playing the rhythm. 🙂

The initial sound you hear is Eddie using the palm of his right hand rubbing on the guitar above the bridge while his left hand is muting the strings on the neck. He ran the sound through a phase 90 and an echo-plex. Very unique in the day of 1977/78. This album blew mind as a high school kid helping his friend installing a car stereo in the summer of 19978. Great song, sometimes you just need to enjoy and groove, this album is amazing and like Hendrix, Van Halen changed the course of music, for good and bad (there was only one Eddie, though plenty of 80s rock was influenced by him, with mixed results). In 2010 I was singing along to this song in my car and realized I might be able to pull this off in karaoke. Dave doesn't have the biggest range with exception of the high flourishes, which are pretty unique to him, so I sang this song maybe 10 times over the months getting comfortable. So then my work had a "fun day" a few months later and a bunch of employees brought in their Rock Band gear for Xbox. I sang this song and got some very positive reactions from my work mates. Good ear Brad. The first Van Halen album was mixed a little different. They had Ed's guitar panned hard left but all the reverb was coming from the right. Yeah...you don't wanna mix up those two singers...people are divided & can be fairly crazed over their feelings for each one. lol Dave was the original guy & that was their raw, youthful phase...and a special, "game changing" moment in time. When Sammy came in...they were older & more interested in producing hit records, than just rocking out all the time. To be fair, they were moving in that direction before Sammy arrived...and they still could rock out when they wanted. But it's apples & oranges. 2 different bands.

Yeah, loved both versions of Van Halen with Hagar and David Lee Roth. This song "I'm a kid of modern science" which equates to well ,, we all know what happens on the streets today as there are many trustees of modern chemistry. Regardless this sound was amazing as "Running with the Devil" and a must watch for Brad & Lex "On Fire." You two HAVE to do 'On Fire." One of the best tunes off this debut album. The guitar work and howling was downright amazing.

There's Eddie and then there's everyone else. He is a genius. Though I have no idea what this song is about I always imagined the Atomic Punk as some sort of underground comic book character. This first album is one of the greatest debut albums of all time and Eddie is as important as Hendrix. RIP EVH.

You can't go wrong with any song from Van Halen through 1986 (Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women & Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, 1984 and 5150) ... The first 6 are all David Lee Roth ... And 5150 was Sammy Hagar.

**CYBERPUNK WAY BEFORE IT'S TIME!!!!** Love love love how different sounding this song is. It's off their 1st album and if you go thru the album song by song you'll notice how the sound changes little by little, sometimes in huge jumps. That's the one thing that amazed me about the band, one of the only hard rock bands that changed their their sound, sometimes a little and sometimes majorly and no one was upset about it LOL Still gotta get you guys to listen to Eddies masterpiece........ "Mean street" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m4akn6e59TQ.html The guitar work in this song is just astounding!!!! Hope you can get to it. Peace

You might be hearing the original version where bass was left speaker and guitar was in right speaker to give it more dynamics. This is before Dolby stereo.
