Yep, you read that right... the surround version of Dudelange is FINALLY available to buy!
Doesn't Charles-Marie Widor's 'Toccata' sound incredible on it??
Those people who already have the stereo version of Dudelange are able to download the update for free. Believe me, it's an ENTIRELY different organ!
I've been fortunate to have had early access to the surround version for over 2 years now, and it still astonishes me. This is simply the most realistic-sounding and most exciting sample set available for Hauptwerk. Nothing else comes close.
No, I'm not sponsored by Voxus and I don't receive a penny from them, but please check them out!

Thank you all so much for your comments, particularly about the tempo. I think this piece commands much more gravitas at this slower tempo. Why do you think people play it much quicker than Widor’s tempo marking?

The tempo is perfect. You can hear what is going on. I think most people play it fast to show off I'm an organist and this pleases me a lot.

I NEEDED THIS today.... tears rinsing my eyes as this majestic piece was our wedding recessional! I wanted to stop ½ way out of the church to listen to the entire thing. May our Sovereign Creator enable us to create just a fraction of Widor's talent. Perfect tempo - except I need larger speakers.

Grand Choeur Dialogue (Gigout) was ours - I wanted to quit greeting people and steal away to the back of the room to soak it in undistracted. But that's not how weddings work. ;)

Amazing recording (especially the tempo!). This reminds me of the recording by Jos van der Kooy on the Muller in Haarlem (which I imagine is quite a workout for the fingers), which uses the exact same tempo. And that, Richard, is for many dutch organ lovers the greatest compliment one can recieve as an organist!

I admire the tempo - it works very well for me and gives the listener time to enjoy the reverberation. This piece is often played faster and can become too compressed.

I have just one recording of this played as steadily as you do. It was a privately issued LP from 1978 illustrating the Blumlein recording technique, and included the Toccata played at High Wycombe Parish Church (All Saints) by Alastair Ross. I have read that the tempo was partly chosen to accommodate the action of the organ - a Henry Willis III from 1930 (currently largely unplayable in spite of a rebuild by Bishop in the 1980s, like the quite similar organ in St Mary's Minster, Reading, on which I learnt to play).

Lovely performance! The score indicates almost every manual note as staccato. I like this subtlety, and it is only possible at a comfortable moderate tempo. And it sounds funky played at a moderate speed! And you have to account for the reverb of the acoustic chamber, so don't turn it into a moosh!

I enjoyed this very much Richard. Since I have recently been studying this piece I probably studied your recording rather too closely and spotted some alternative note choices in LH in bars 37 and 38 (3 min. 7 sec. into the video). I admit Widor's harmony has always puzzled me here where the LH arpeggios go down to E during the F# major harmony (so F# dominant 7th 3rd inversion) in bar 37, then more strangely again going down to E during the G# dominant 7th harmony in bar 38, but I like the sound of it. I notice that your LH arpeggios go down to F# in bar 37 and G# in bar 38, so fitting a more conventional view of the harmony, but not what is notated in any of the editions that I have looked at. What is your view of this? Are you considering those LH E notes as errors that go back to the first edition, or do you simply prefer the sound of the more conventional harmony that you play?

The tempo is derived from the two semi quavers which precede the two quavers in the left hand part. The SQ need to be quite staccato but the Q not.
