Luke never gets the credit he deserves. He is a unbelievable writer/composer and musician and one of the best ever at his chosen profession.

Considering I see this dude on many interviews on RU-vid and people claiming he doesn’t get enough credit, I think he gets enough credit.

@@hymeflymaybe with guitar aficionado’s but he’s not recognized nearly enough as one of the best guitarists of his generation. Ask a non guitar player who EVH is or who Santana is and they would know. I think this is what the original commenter probably meant and he has a point.

MTV helped Africa HUGELY back in ‘81 going into ‘82. I remember the video in rotation like it was yesterday. Love the song too! For me, there’s every reason to love such a song. It’s perfect!

Rosanna and Make believe were singles released in 1982 before AFRICA. No way Africa whether video or song was played in 1981 . Toto IV was being recorded in 1981.

@@luvbasses5487 OK!! 😆 🤣 😂 😹 but I'm 61 and I remember that period really for this reason 👉 I was wearing out my TURN BACK LP in 1981 going into 1982 and actually at the time TOTO IV came out (I bought the album months later), I actually liked TURN BACK much better because it rocked. I remember how I felt .That was it.

"Africa" took a long time to be recorded, it was added to the IV album at the last minute, hence probably its position as the last song in the album. It appeared on the radios by the fall of 1982, and became number 1 worldwilde by early 1983.

@@aubindemontfalcon5967 Africa came out at the right time. Toto (at that point) needed some hits. Even beggars can't be choosy when they're hungry.

A great and fun interview Paul! I've been a big Toto fan since their debut LP and I think Luke is one of the best, and most underrated guitarists in rock. The fact he has always been in such demand as a session player pretty much tells the story. In fact, everyone in the band is/was a tremendous musician...especially Jeff Porcaro, who was absolutely amazing.

Foreigner who came out a year before TOTO also recorded their first album before ever playing any concerts. This was clarified by Lou Gramm on Behind the music in 2002. 😮 7:20

Many people made a parallel between Toto and Foreigner. Although the two bands are of the same generation, they don't sound that much similar. Toto is far more versatile, subtle and maestro musicians. Toto's music is more interesting than Foreigner which is a more basically rock / ballad band, with less originality. And Foreigner's former drummer sounds as original as a drum machine, boring as hell...

@@aubindemontfalcon5967 I did not make a comparison at all on how the two bands sounded. Read my post again please. Fact is neither band played in a club or any concert before their first singles or albums came out. Also because I was around back then Toto was actually compared to Boston and if you look at the cover of those two bands debut albums Boston had a guitar with a city inside it in space. Toto had a beautiful sword pictured in space. The back covers of both albums had Tom Scholz almost in the same pose as David Paich. Bobby Kimball almost in the same pose as Brad Delp. I bought Boston, Foreigner and Totos debut albums in that order when they came out yep, 1976, 1977 and 1978 . I was there and I take back nothing I posted.
