Today we’ve got episode 4 in our ongoing piano FAQ series as we tackle the most commonly asked questions with regards to the Roland FP90X. Current and prospective owners should find this video helpful.

FAQ #1: How Much does the FP90X Cost?
Here in Canada, a new FP90X retails for $3,499.99+HST for just the slab. In the States, it retails for about $3,000 USD, so you can use these two benchmarks to adjust to your own local currency wherever you happen to be located.
FAQ #2: Is the FP90X Worth the Money?
This is a great question because there are a number of very capable slab digital pianos out there that cost much less than the FP90X. Even the FP60X is a great instrument that costs quite a bit less, and of course, the Kawai ES920 and Yamaha P515 are also quite a bit less expensive.
Why would it make sense for someone to spring for the FP90X? The action would be the big thing as many would agree that the PHA50 is the best action available in a portable all-in-one digital piano.
The FP90X is also equipped with the PureAcoustic sound engine, the most advanced sound engine Roland makes.
The FP90X also has a robust 4-speaker, a 60-watt system that out specs anything else in the category and means performers can often get away without needing an amp for extra power.
If you’re a singer, the FP90X has a mic input which, combined with the excellent speaker system, and the FP90X could be very enticing.
FAQ #3: When were the FP90 and FP90X released?
The original FP90 came out in the fall of 2016, and the updated FP90X came out in early 2021. Our guess is that the FP90X will have a 4 or 5 year production cycle from there.
FAQ #4: What is the Weight/Dimensions of the FP90X?
The FP90X is 52.8” wide, 15.3” deep, 5.4” in height and weighs 52 lbs.
FAQ #5: What are the Differences Between the FP90 and FP90X?
The first big thing to note is a significant speaker enhancement, with the FP90X receiving a superiorly designed system. They also added the BMC sound chip, which helps produce a more complex tone across all of the patches and sound engines.
The sound engine has been upgraded to the PureAcsoutic engine, the top engine Roland produces. They also included the new My Stage feature and have added a built-in USB Audio interface.
FAQ #6: PHA50 - Which Models Have It?
How many portable Roland pianos feature the PHA50 action, to be more specific. The answer is 3. The FP90X, RD2000 and FANTOM 8 are the only 3 portable models outfitted with the PHA50. The FP90X is the only one of the 3 with built-in speakers, which is important to note.
FAQ #7: How do you Take Apart the FP90X?
Disclaimer, don’t do this. If you do, this will void your warranty should you ever require warranty coverage.
FAQ #8: How do you Connect the FP90X to Bluetooth MIDI?
The first step is to press the Function key and turn the Bluetooth radio on. From there, you press and hold the Function key which will start the pairing process on the FP90X. Next, open up the Roland Piano Every Day App on your phone, enter the Connection Dialogue screen and select FP90X MIDI.
FAQ #9: How do you Connect the FP90X to a Computer?
You can connect the FP90X to a computer by plugging it into a computer with a USB cable, and this gives you both a USB MIDI and USB Audio connection.
FAQ #10: What Digital Pianos Compare Well to the FP90X?
If you are considering the FP90X, what other instruments should you be looking at for comparison? Surprisingly, there aren’t really any perfectly comparable instruments to the FP90X.
Few high-end stage pianos have built-in speakers, so the FP90X falls into the all-in-one portable digital piano category. The closest Yamaha comparison would be the Yamaha P515, but the FP90X is an objectively superior machine in almost every way and as such, costs significantly more.
The closest Kawai comparison would be the ES920, and this is a closer comparison due to the strength of the ES920’s sound engine, but again, not a perfect comparison as the FP90X still out specs the ES920 and costs more.
