Welcome! Today we’ll be taking our first look at the Roland GP3, a brand-new mini digital grand piano.
Compact, and affordably priced with a great action and tone engine, we expect the GP3 to be a big hit for Roland.

Overview
The GP3 is the latest addition to Roland’s line of digital baby grand pianos, which up until now consisted of the GP607 and GP609. And it makes a ton of sense as to why they’ve come out with this new model when you consider the price tag considering just how expensive all of the digital baby grands on the market currently are.
The GP3 is coming to us right around $5,000 USD, which is an absolutely critical price point for manufacturers to hit.
For people who want a piano with the aesthetics of a small grand piano with a respectable action and a good sound engine, the GP3 is by far the least expensive option on the market.
Piano Tone
The GP3 is equipped with the sample-based version of Roland’s SuperNATURAL Piano Engine with 256-note polyphony. From a sound engine perspective, you’re essentially getting similar specs to something like an HP702 here.
Roland hasn’t specified this in the marketing literature, but we’re assuming that the BMC processor is the sound chip present here. Like most Rolands in general, the GP3 tends to tonally skew towards a NY Steinway, and many people suspect a NY Steinway D was the piano Roland recorded for the basis of their sample, though this information has never been disclosed.
The tone is being presented through a pair of downward-facing 11-watt speakers for 22 watts of power in total. On paper, this looks a little bit underpowered for an instrument seeking to emulate a grand piano sound experience, but when you actually play it, the effect isn’t underwhelming at all which really speaks to the efficiency of the speakers.
In terms of total onboard tones, the GP3 is quite lean at 15 tones, with a handful of acoustic piano patches, a few e pianos and a couple others. The focus here really is the primary grand piano tone which is really quite satisfying.
Piano Action
Roland has been vague about the action they’ve included in the GP3, but we were able to confirm that it is in fact their solid PHA4 action.
The PHA4 is considered one of the best plastic key actions on the market, and can be found through much of Roland’s lineup. It’s on the heavier side overall, pretty much in line with an acoustic baby grand action.
It’s equipped with triple sensor detection, escapement/let-off and textured keytops, all very welcome specs.
Connectivity
The GP3 is a little bit light from a connectivity perspective in that it does not have discrete ¼” line outputs. That said, there are dual headphone outputs, and you can turn the speakers on or off independently of whether or not you have the headphones plugged in, meaning you can use one of the headphone ports as a line out if needed.
It also has USB Type and B, but more importantly, it’s equipped with Bluetooth MIDI and Bluetooth Audio. Bluetooth Audio is really key here because it means you can stream music directly through the GP3’s speakers which is great for entertaining guests.
Features
The GP3 has a basic built-in MIDI recorder with playback, onboard rhythms, and standard features like dual mode, twin piano mode, metronome and transpose.
There are also almost 400 pre-loaded songs, which again, is excellent for folks looking to have a digital baby grand piano in an entertaining space.
Cabinet
The quality of the polyester here is nothing short of excellent, and the overall quality of the cabinet is top notch. Roland really stepped their game up in this department about 4 or 5 years ago, and the GP3 definitely attests to this.
Even the legs, hardware and pedals are all very high quality and easy to assemble.
Conclusion
The GP3 is a great addition to the market given its total uniqueness for the price point. It delivers the shape and aesthetic of a grand piano while still offering a high level of musical performance.

Notice this is not exclusively a mic recording, but a blended recording. At 4:05, they clarify it is a "Line Out + Overhead Microphones". This is a recording technique used in studios to create a fuller tone than what you would get from microphones alone, or line out alone. You can do this same technique with any other digital piano to make it sound great in a recording.

Always love your reviews and playing. I built a baby grand housing for my Roland FP7F in satin black for the living room, and another for my Roland FP80 in gloss white for my "Jazz Club" downstairs. The design is very inspiring to play on.

Honestly the grand cabinet is less of an appeal for me than other musical features so if I were to spend this kind of money on a Roland, it would go to the LX 705. Having said that, I can see a number of occasions where this piano makes sense and it definitely deserves to exist. Thanks for the wonderful video as usual, I enjoyed it a lot.

Definitely, the main thing is the quality of the instrument relative to what you can afford. Personally as I am intending on taking lessons, I would be more inclined to practice on it with the aesthetic look of those Grands. ie just looking at them whenever I see a grand live I imagine playing it. I have a midi controller keyboard and a synth but seeing a Grand recently actually made me decide to take piano lessons, due to the quality issue I’m thinking of buying the FP-90x and Shelling it into a B G

I don't know about the LX705 but I would happily stay with my NU1X if it weren't for the fact that uprights most often don't have a presentable backside, making it hard to place in a new apartment with lack of wallspace. But maybe Yamaha will also enter this space with a baby GT...

I’m stunned at the lack of digital artifacts, particularly in the mid range and sustain. Next to the IVory3, VST, I would say the GP3 hands down is the best naturally sounding.

I would love to see a reveiw of the Seiler ED-126 and ED-132. They seem to hold a very interesting place in the market. These digital reviews are great. They give a great insight into a market of buyers that usually aren't getting much good information on digitals.

One thing I would value is the Touch Sensitivity. The GP3/FP30X/RP107are on the lower range: 5 types, fixed. The RP701 is an upgrade in this aspect: 100 types, fixed. This little detail is very important to control the response of the sound. The 5 types (Soft 2, Soft 1, Medium, Hard 1, Hard 2) are not enough, at least for me, to feel I am in control of the piano sample. I had two Roland digital pianos in the past with those 5 settings and I wish I had bought one with 100 settings. Same thing with Kawai and Yamaha lower range digital pianos. However, Yamaha gives the DGX-670 the ability to fine tune the touch sensitivity with 128 types (probably because it is a workstation + arranger + digital piano). If I had to buy a Roland product, I think I would buy the Fantom-08, just like Stu did. You get a lot of control of the sound with a workstation.

I certainly agree with your point about touch sensitivity, especially when it comes to intermediate and advanced players. Having a large range of sensitivity options that allow you to get the touch dialled into your preferences is incredibly handy and beneficial.

@@Instrumental-Covers I haven't tried an FP30X. I first tried the PHA4 on I think the RP701 than almost a year later the HP702. For me I don't want a digital piano that I have to eddet a lot to get the righttype of sound/responce. On my ES110 I only needed to add some brilliance, and to my ears at sounds a lot beter than that HP702 did. If there is one thing it lacks IMO besides beter build quality is if the keys could have bin more heavier other then that it's great. The GHS and RHC may not have escapement, however the defalt touch responce is a lot beter IMO than the PHA4🎹🎶

My new F107 came tuned to 442 Hz too. While playing alone I admit I did not notice, but when I started playing along with a piano song I was "hey, something is wrong". Easy to change the tuning, but somewhat more tricky to save it so that it keeps 440 Hz every time I turn it on (manual has the steps). This GP3 is like the F107/RP107 with a pretty shiny box.

That is quite interesting that the piano arrived with the tuning set to 442 Hz! Perhaps, it is an anomaly situation as I have not heard of this issue with other units right out of the box. Also, I do agree that the GP3 has quite the attractive cabinet! :)

@Matias yeah there are different tuning standards in different countries due to climate, but the type of ensemble can effect the nominal standard tuning. I've noticed that most grand pianos in Spain are tuned up a bit. 441 or 442. I certainly wouldn't notice if the tuning were 442 while playing solo. It would be very annoying to start a jazz band gig that way though, without knowing, particularly outdoors when maybe the horns are struggling to reach 440 anyway. But we often do have to change radically for clarinetists. Typically tuning down.

Hi! Brent here! The GP3 is not much of an upgrade from a musical perspective as it has the same tone engine and action. With that said, it does have an improved speaker system and a grand piano aesthetic, which might make it an appealing upgrade.

While the GP3 is an excellent economical offering from Roland, it is far more streamlined in terms of features compared to the DG30. The DG30 has far more built-in sounds and features as well as a more robust and powerful speaker system. :)

I have played the DG30. It is similar to the CN301 with a prettier cabinet. Personally, I thought the CN39 and DG30 didn't have an outstanding sound in person through the built-in speaker system. Both the CN301 and DG30 use Kawai's second lowest tone generator: the Progressive Harmonic Imaging (PHI) and their best plastic action. Here in the US, a Kawai CN301 is $3,000 and a DG30 is $6,000. A Roland RP107 is $1,200 and a GP3 is $4,000. So, I guess half or more of the money goes to the cabinet.

Here in Europe they are very similary priced 3.444 $ vs 3.599 $ Yes a lot of the price is the cabinet

@@bollof1 My pleasure. I agree the DG30 seems a better option. I played it next to the CA79, and my impression was the DG30 sounded coarse with too much bass. But at least it has a 3-band equalizer and the bass can be adjusted. The Roland GP3 does not have an equalizer. Here in the US, you can buy a Yamaha CLP-765GP for the same price of a DG30. I have played the CLP-765GP as well as the CLP-795GP, and the difference is not that much in terms of sound via the built-in speaker system. The CLP-765GP is a much better executed instrument than both the DG30 and GP30: larger cabinet, better speakers, CFX and Bösendorfer samples (better than the basic samples in the Kawai and Roland), binaural recording for headphones (only Yamaha has done this in digital pianos, that I know), and better key action (GrandTouch-S). It also has a 16-track sequences, which can be handy if you wish to create a backing track for your performance without having to use a computer. The Yamaha is 114 cm deep, whereas the Kawai in only 87 cm deep, and the Roland is just 69 cm deep. The Yamaha resembles a lot more a baby grand than the competition. Too bad Merriam Music is not a Yamaha dealer, so they can't feature higher-end Yamaha models.

@@Instrumental-Covers I think the DG 30 also have a built in multitrack sequencer... The 765 GP is more than 1.000 $ more expensive than the other two here in Europe. If I had the money and space I would love to have the 795 GP. Dexibell H10 mini grand also looks like a great instrument (but with a slightly to modern look, for mee at least)

There aren't really many notable competitors at this price point to be honest. Something like the Kawai DG30 and Yamaha CVP909 sell for much higher price points than the GP3. This makes the GP3 a really unique and affordable offering from Roland!

realmente todos los que en actuaciones tocamos pianos de cola y en casa por el espacio no podemos tener uno ,añoramos no tenerlo muchos no le importara la imagen o como sentirse detrás de un piano porque solo tocan pianos digitales sin muebles, resonancia y demás pero estos pianos que han avanzado mucho soluciona a nosotros estos problemas, puedo decir que sentirse detrás de un piano de cola no tiene nada que ver con un teclado . yo se que a muchos no le importa, pero a los que normalmente tocamos pianos de cola si. creo que este piano con sus características puede ser la solución buen sonido , bonito gabinete y buena pulsación.

It is interesting that, for some, the aesthetic of the piano plays a part in their overall perception of the musical experience. Hi Justin! Roland does not make actual acoustic grand pianos. They use either samples that many believe to be taken from a Steinway grand or a modelling engine to generate their piano sounds. Thanks and all the best! :)

i'm fairly sure this has the piano reality sound engine and not the supernatural sound engine, also has dynamic sensors instead of triple sensors that they use in portables.

so if I read the official specs, the GP3 has "Piano Reality Standard Keyboard" and it is a PHA-4, and the GP6 has "Piano Reality Hybrid Premium Keyboard" and it is a PHA-50... but if I want PHA-4... I can just buy an FP-10 and it is like US$600... but I suppose this "Piano Reality Standard Keyboard" might be an improved version of PHA-4

While we're all getting familiar with the specs, it appears that the new Piano Reality keyboards do have some updates. I believe one of the most meaningful updates has to do with the sensor system. You can certainly bet on Stu talking more about these details in upcoming videos. :)

"Piano Reality Hybrid Premium" is hybrid grand on lx706, "Piano Reality Hybrid Concert" is hybrid grand on lx708. The difference is the keybed vibrator. There are no pha-50 choices. GP-3 is a pha-4 but maybe it is using a pha-4 concert not pha-4 standard (I'm not sure).

Usually, the stereo condenser microphones are placed above the instrument to capture as much of the sound as it would sound within a room.

Hi! Brent here! Using the headphone output is the only way to get a direct line out sound from the GP3. The fidelity of the sound should still be excellent, but you may need to boost the output a bit through either an amplifier or within the DAW you are using.

Any thoughts on a digital grand piano for a hotel restaurant? This looks too underpowered, and others I have looked at (Yamaha) don't seem to have a feature to play multiple MIDI files from a USB stick (in other words, the piano can play even though there's no pianist).

Stu's haircut is quite good looking 0:20 but then later on I found he hasn't wash his hair today... in Asia, many people take a shower at night, to clean up the dust and pollution during the day before sleep... in the US, many people take a shower in the morning, to get ready for the day (so they'd wash their hair in the morning)... how about in Toronto?

I think it is a bit of a mixed bag here in Canada! There are even some people that shower both in the morning and at night. :)

I remember going from California to Hong Kong, and I'd go out to buy something in the morning and when I get home around noon and need to meet someone at 2pm, I'd take a shower because it is so humid and sticky (hot)... like the sweat is making a person quite uncomfortable... I think that happens like in Florida as well

Hi there! Yes, the GP-3 and GP-6 have very different tone engines. The GP-3 has a sample-based engine versus the GP-6's modelling engine. Furthermore, they have very different speaker systems, which yields a different sonic experience as well. :)

The GP310 is a very different instrument aesthetically of course. With that said, the GP310 is a step up from the GP3 in my opinion.

The RD88 and GP3 are in very different categories with very different intended uses. They both have the PHA4 action and possess the SuperNATURAL tone engine, but the RD88 has far more features and built-in sounds. The RD88 is intended to be a stage piano, while the GP3 is positioned as a home-use digital grand. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

Am i the only one whos having short ring from sustain pedal? If you play a note staccato with the pedal pressed its noticeable. Its as if your holding a pedal half way on am acoustic. Am i alone with this?

There is a little bit of decay/resonance by design. You may also be hearing a bit of a tail from the reverb, which can be disabled. It is hard to triage the instrument without hearing/experiencing the problem first hand though of course.

The pivot length of this action is 20 cm, which is 2 cm less than a Steinway Model S grand's pivot length (22 cm). So, it is fairly close, but not quite as long as an acoustic grand.

It is a matter of preference really. They are not exactly in the same price category though. The DG30 is more fully-loaded in terms of features and sounds, but it is also more expensive.

this is obviously going after the KAWAI DG30.At least these pianos are small which is agood thing..I cant unsderstand making models with large furnitures trying to look like real baby grands.They defeat one of the advantages of having a digital which is the compact size and light weight as opposed to an acoustic.Also,i think the only company that got it right as far as style is Dexibell who are looking for modern design.I think the Japanese companies are doing it wrong trying to make them look like an acoustic.Its one thing to sound like an acoustic but there is absolutely no reason they should look like an acoustic.

It is a very subjective thing of course. The Kawai DG30 is an extremely popular model. In addition to the compact size, a lot of customers are drawn to other aspects of digital pianos, such as the reduced maintenance and headphone/quiet practice option. The GP3 is an impressive offering from Roland, especially considering how much more affordable it is versus its competition.

Just asking, is it worth buying a FP-90x & buying a baby grand shell for for it or just buying a Roland baby grand? Or perhaps this one that you’re reviewing in vid?

I think I’d rather have an FP-90X with baby grand shell. You get a much better action and sound engine! But the GP3 looks and sounds great.

The FP90X is a lot more closely aligned with the GP607 than the GP3. Naturally, with digital grand pianos, the cabinet and finish do contribute a lot to the premium cost associated with it. Thanks for tuning in and all the best! :)

@@MerriamPianos thanks for replies. What I was thinking is buying the 90x and then buying a shell at a later date as that cost is premium! But I would stretch to buy all in one if the cost and actual piano you got was gd enough at fairly similar price point. Incidentally online I saw some made to measure shell’s fitted with neon lighting that looked spectacular.

Biggest Deal breaker and disappointment is the Number of Voices. For this price range, would expect them to include several hundred. Poor Design Choice on this feature.

The GP6 and GP9 models are far more feature-rich. The GP3 is really geared towards someone that wants the aesthetic of a grand with a very streamlined, core piano experience.

I just cannot understand how anyone would pay so much for a digital piano with PHA-4 plastic action and subpar sound. There are even no detailed specifications of this digital piano on their Web site and I understand why. Roland disappointed me with this offering and I am glad that I stopped using its pianos last year.

While many players/customers will value a piano's features over its aesthetics, there are some piano shoppers that heavily prioritize aesthetics. With the GP3, Roland has offered one of the most affordable digital grand pianos on the market. The cabinet and finish certainly account for the premium price. Ultimately, the GP3 gives customers that are seeking the aesthetic of a grand piano a reasonably-affordable option.

Console digital pianos look good only against a wall. But say someone wants a digital piano at home in the middle of a living room, or say a commercial place like a small bar or restaurant room, then this tiny grand would be a great choice. A slab digital piano with stand or a console digital piano would not match in those places.

@@matiaserp Buying this digital piano is like buying an expensive piece of furniture! FP-30X for $1000 is much better (feature wise) than GP3. FP-90X is way above it. PHA-4 action does not last very long (already deteriorates after a year of intensive use).

I don't get this. The action is RD800 which is OK but not PH50 or higher ... like the LX708. So this aimed at the uninitiated hosting a party paying a piano player to provide ambient music to other morons who attended the party for free food. Go with the LX706 or 708 and save some time and money. If the speaker system was better then I'd see a point.

The GP3 features the PHA4 action, which is quite popular and revered by players of all levels. Of course, with any digital grand, a substantial portion of the premium price comes down to the cabinet and polished finish. With that said, every customer is different and has different preferences.
