Introduction
The FP-60X is an even mix of the 30X and 90X in terms of features, price, and performance, although closer to the 90X when it comes to performance. It is a professional, weighted, 88-key digital piano that is designed to be portable for professional or personal use, and with the optional furniture stand, the FP-60X can function as a permanent digital piano in your home.
There isn’t much that the FP-60X can’t do, with onboard speakers, hundreds of onboard sounds, recording options, connectivity options, a solid keyboard, and real-time auto-accompaniment when used with the Roland Piano app.
Having done a fair bit of gigging recently using the FP-60X, we would like to share this experience with the community.
Specs
The FP-60X uses the latest chip architecture, the Behavioural Modelling Chip (BMC), which has increased the calculation rate of the SuperNATURAL engine, making a more complex and thicker sound. It has 256 notes of sampling polyphony - no modelling - and over 300 onboard sounds that can be accessed through the app or the keyboard interface. There are two upward-facing speakers that combine for 26 Watts of power.
Piano Sound
The onboard equalizer allows for real-time sound sculpting, and the sound engine also provides for more detailed editing of the tones. By using the app or the easy-to-access menu, parameters such as lid setting, string resonance, damper resonance, key off resonance, single note tuning, single volume tuning, and single note character. Other, higher-level settings, include key touch, hammer response, and microphone effects.
Action
The FP-60X utilizes the PHA-4 action, which is notable for its escapement action, triple sensors, and great weighting. Mimicking an acoustic grand, the weight required to move a key on this keyboard is 52-53 grams.
Tone
The sounds are highly dynamic, meaning they have a large range of variability in volume and timbre.
Comparison to FP-30X and FP-90X
The FP-30X has the same “brain” as the FP-60X with the difference being the need to use the app for the 30X when you can use the interface for the 60X to access the functionality. The 60X also has upgraded speakers, better quality, power, and configuration, and better connectivity options, such as the microphone input, and the My Stage, presets that allow you to store custom piano configurations. Missing from the 30X are the equalizer and the tactile controls to mix any blended or split sounds.
The FP-90X has two upgraded features; the PHA-50 action, with longer key sticks and pivot length as well as wood-sided keys, and the implementation of a modelling engine.
When looking at the FP-60X, Roland has done a marvellous job of configuring, EQing, and amplifying the speakers. There is no hiss, and great subtlety along with great “punch”. The speakers work well as monitors, or reinforcements for existing monitors, even in noisy environments due to the tone quality and speaker placement, allowing a performer to play more sensitively.
The biggest difference between the 30X and the 60X is the speaker performance and, therefore, how immersed in the sound and connected to the instrument the performer will feel.
Connectivity
The FP-60X has two, stereo ¼” outputs that are independent of the two front-facing headphone jacks, an on/off switch for the speakers, Bluetooth Audio that allows for streaming of music to the keyboard, and Bluetooth MIDI.
Final Thoughts
A great product needs to clearly solve a problem or answer a question. The FP-60X answers the question, “What instrument is highly portable, but will also give the best acoustic piano experience without the need for additional sound reinforcement?” Within the Roland product line, the FP-60X is the answer to that question.
