Welcome to another piano comparison video at the Merriam Pianos RU-vid channel. Today we’ll be comparing two of the top digital piano options under $1,000 CAD in the Casio CDP-S350 and Yamaha P125.
When it comes to 88 note weighted digital pianos under the $1,000 price point, there’s not a ton of convincing options. Casio has really driven the movement towards offering good musical options in the price point, and today there are several viable options to choose from. The two we’ll be looking at today represent two of the most popular.

Casio CDP-S350 Background
Casio has said that the S350 is the model that serves to replace the PX-160, though you wouldn’t know it by looking at it. The user interface has been upgraded to feature a large LCD display screen, it’s absolutely loaded with sounds (700 total), and frankly, it looks a lot different.
Piano Sound
What stands out above everything with the S350 though is the sheer quality of the sound samples. Across the board, the samples here deliver a very high level of authenticity.
While I would say if we’re talking about the main acoustic piano sample only, I would give the edge to the P125, when it comes to the quality and quantity of the other patches here, the S350 definitely gets the win. There are 24 total sounds on the P125 compared to 700 on the S350.
In terms of polyphony, the P125 massively outdoes the S350 with 192 note polyphony, while the S350 only has 64 notes. If someone is looking for an acoustic piano replacement at this price point, this polyphony disparity is definitely a factor that would direct people to the P125. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something versatile that isn’t going to be used exclusively for the acoustic piano tones, the S350 is probably a better option.
Piano Action:
The S350 uses Casio’s Scaled Weighted Hammer Action Keyboard with simulated ebony & ivory key textures. It does not have escapement, but it does have a triple sensor which makes for more accurate MIDI output.
The P125 features Yamaha’s GHS action, which also does not have escapement, and uses a double sensor as opposed to a triple sensor. The double sensor shouldn’t be an issue for personal playing, but it does make the P125 a less than ideal choice for high-level studio use.
Between the two of them, I personally find the action on the S350 more responsive, whereas the P125’s action feels more spongy. This is a matter of personal preference, so you’ll definitely want to compare these actions for yourself.
Piano Features:
Both of these instruments come equipped with an auto-accompaniment feature. This is a super fun add-on that’s executed very well on both instruments. Navigation is easy on both, though the S350 offers a lot more options in terms of rhythms and other controllable parameters.
Both instruments have split and layer functions, and in terms of connectivity, both instruments have USB, but not Bluetooth. The P125 has the ability to turn off the speaker system, whereas the S350 does not.
Both come with music desks, as well as basic sustain switch pedals, though I’d recommend upgrading to a pedal with half-pedaling capability.

Just got the Casio on sale Friday at Guitar Center. I'm just a beginner but so far its been great and to be honest had no idea how many extras are included until I watched this. Sounds like I can start my one man band here in a few years after I get good

Dude, sick playing. I really want to be able to play like that. What is that, cocktail music, jazz? Picked up the CDP S-350, use it in my band. We love the variety and quality of the samples. Connected to our PA it gets the walls shaking. Good tip for the included sustain pedal if you have carpet, little bit of velcro and it stays perfectly. Thanks, rock on.

The electronics - music or otherwise - industry is always playing catch up with one another, so I agree..I think the CDPS350 sets a new bar in a few ways, and I'm sure we'll see responses from Roland, Yamaha etc pretty soon.

You're very correct. The Yamaha P-125 has better tone for piano sound, but the Casio CDP-S350 has better action touch (firmer and less slippery).

The surface of the Casio keys is having a coarse structure, but the dynamic feel and acoustic experience is "special": Kind of bouncy and noisy, more toy grade gear... Tried it in a local store, was honestly planning to buy this Casio, but was instantly feeling that it would not work for me. Go try yourself!

Great video. I was originally looking at 61 keys that it became apparent thats not enough, then looking at the 88 key digital pianos I was disappointed how few voices and few rhythms they had but the cdp-s350 looks to be best of both worlds although not very high polyphony.

You won't need all those sounds really... If you are going for a digital piano and if you want those sounds then get a good digital piano and and you can get a arranger keyboard later

Love the comparison of the two keyboards, fantastic presentation. I'm picking up the Casio CDSP/360 to replace all of the vintage keyboards that I had from the mid 80's through 2010. Before I chose the CDSP/360, I was set on getting a Yamaha P125; however, because I'm totally blind and need something with accessibility in mind, I checked out the CDSP/360, and was absolutely blown away. For a first digital piano, it meets every need that I have and more. Although this comparison isn't about what I'm getting, it was still extremely helpful, gave me all sorts of insight into both keyboards and gave me a great preview of what I'm about to be getting into as I learn to play my first digital piano.

Good point at tge beginning, the perception of how piano sounds, and feels (17:40) is bery individual and indeed the best if not the only way to make a decision which model to get is to try it yourself.. I never tried this Casio (tried the yamaha which I though was just fantastic for feel and sound) but have an older Celviano which indeed feels good, soft and quiet under your fingers so maybe Casio is indeed better in this aspect.. There are too many models to choose from these days but a good thing is that portable pianos sound so good now..

One of the main features of the P-125 is USB Audio output (all Yamaha digital pianos released since 2018 have it) - does the Casio CDP-S350 have USB Audio output? This is an important feature for anyone planning on recording the actual sound of the instrument.

Thanks a lot for your helpful information. Just one question, is the key of casio 350 having the same weight when pressing down as the yamaha 125, thought yamaha sounds much better. if your answer is yes, we will still keep the newly purchased casio... the reason we did not picked yamaha is because casio 350 has the more than 150 song bank for children to listen to...but this yamaha 125 barely had any...very disappointedly...if yamaha 125 could download the same amount of songs to the keyboard, we will go for yamaha 125...it's very kind of you reading the above question. Thanks for the review, Stu. In my country cdp s350 (without the matching stand) is more expensive than roland fp-10 (with a matching stand). My money would go to the Roland if Casio wouldn't offer a better value. Very nice instrument in isolation, but the competition is so fierce in this category.

I've had both upgrades (the p-225 and s360). Love the feel of the 360's keys but found the 225's sound to be superior for its realism. I stuck with the 225. The 360 may have a ton more presets but many of them sound toyish.

That is certainly fair. While the CDPS360's sound library is extremely impressive, being able to pack that much into a piano of this price point will inevitably mean that some concessions have to be made else where. In that regard, models like the P225 and ES120 have more of the value put towards the core piano experience. To some extent, they are are different tools for different jobs. :)

Great comparison!! But when it comes to the hammer action of the keyboard, which of these two is better?? I have both on my list but I want a Digital piano that almost replicates an acoustic piano keys action. Please help.

This was brilliant. As a beginner, I'm not sure if I should go with the Casio CDP S360 or the Yamaha P125. The P125 is highly recommended but it is also older tech. Meanwhile, what is your opinion on the new S360? Does it emulate the P125 in terms of sound quality? Thank you for your input.

I’d say a yamaha p-71 or p-45 (they’re pretty much the same piano) are great for beginners. I currently have a p-71 although i’m going to switch to a casio s360 because of how portable it is

@@mickymois4174 Thank you for your response. I did my research on the P-45, but made a decision not to purchase it. Although it is a good sounding device, It has been almost 6 years since its release, and it is lagging behind in a lot of features. Be it key action, pedalling (I know I know...just need one), key textures, polyphony etc. Lately, I've been considering the NuX Npk-10. I'm aware they are new entrants, but this model offers a better bargain. It's almost two thousand rupees (INR) cheaper than the P-45 !!! Hopefully, Yamaha releases a new model. I'll take a chance on the NuX Npk-10. Maybe 4-5 years later, I'll get a more expensive Digital Piano for a more proficient pianist (hobbyist) future me.

Hi, I am unable to decide between KDP 110 and Rp 501r/ 302, (and may be Yamaha ydp 164) . Frankly the Roland sound is not at all pleasing to me. I love the kawai timber. But Roland has escapement in its action and few other features. Should I be choosing Action over sound?? Need your valuable suggestions on this. My usage is mainly for contemporary, classical, jazz pieces and most importantly for songwriting and vocal accompaniment. Hoping to receive a reply.

Stu sounded like Joe Sample when playing the Casio in auto play mode. The Yamaha piano sounded a bit better than the Casio. Yesterday or the day before, I upgraded to Pianoteq 7 and purchased the NY and Hamburg Steinway D voices as well as the C Bechstein 210. That said, I'm back to playing the Bluthner Concert Recording grand which is definitely improved from Version 6. Still waiting for the Kawai es920 to ship. You can use the audio Output on both of Them and put it into an Audio Interface connected to your daw. Works with about every synth or Keyboard. I dont think they have direct USB Audio.

Hello Stu! Have you had a chance to look at the new 61-key Casio CT-S1 keyboard? I bought one a few weeks ago and it really blows me away. 🙂 Not a digital piano, no weighted keys (maybe semi-weighted, you might say), but for being just a keyboard, it's very surprising in many ways. You could even start learning to play piano on it. The design is more piano than keyboard, and it's not for people who need an accompaniment rhythm, but for people who have been looking for a small keyboard to play piano on the side (like me) when you can't get to the big piano or sit on the couch in the evening, it's ideal. Anyway, I am very excited because there was nothing like this before. Now I would only wish for weighted keys, then I would be completely happy. 😊

What would you recommend for a somewhat basic el. piano? I don't need 250+ polyphony, don't plan on recording or sampling, no accompaniment needed, etc.. What I DO need : - HQ realistic piano sound (soundS - grand, electric, upright) -, weighted keys that resemble the acoustic piano feel - transpose function Any suggestions? Many thanks.

I think what you’re looking for is similar to me. I ended up finding an open-box deal on a Kawai ES110 and love it. There are lots of reviews for it on RU-vid, too. The one thing the reviews may not mention is that, yes, the ES110 has a transpose setting that allows the pitch to be lowered or raised in semi-tone steps.

Stu, you stated in this video that the Casio CDP-S350 has a triple-sensor action. However, your spec sheet for this piano indicates a dual-sensor action. You also stated in an earlier video that the CDP-S350 had a dual-sensor action. So which is it - a dual-sensor or a triple-sensor action?

If you check out their website, you can see they state Touch Response : 3 sensitivity levels... for polyphony they only state 64... that just too low for any digital piano. I wouldn't consider it just for that...

"Touch Response : 3 sensitivity levels" doesn't mean the number of sensors. And there are two sensors per key in the CDP-S and PX-S models.

MY BAD (sort of)...I always own mistakes when I flubbed...in this case it was a joint-effort. When we shot this, there wasn't much info out there, and one of Casio's corporate sites had this listed as a Tri-Sensor, which has now been updated. I didn't research it further, and rolled with it. I've now edited the video so that we avoid confusion. Thanks for the question / catching this.

Too bad I'm hooked to the Yamaha piano samples, and can't really enjoy other brands even though I'd like to. Casio and Kawai sound hollow to me, Roland is getting there kinda. Yamaha has that perfect "roar" with chords (probably other brands' samples are too "perfectly" tuned?), and the higher registers sound best to me personally, not too dim and not too harsh.

with my old yamaha i played a lot of stuff on repeat never changing it up. w/ new casio tones i seem to invent more. i would say the yamaha would seem better, but u can get a rich piano tone from casio w/ a few adjustments

I can hear that specific distortion ("roar" as you said?) on the Yamaha which isn't on the Casio. The Casio sounded less acoustic if seen that way

The Casio CDP S350 keybed is absolutely HORENDOUS!!! This is especially evident with the black keys. After a while of playing, some keys start getting stuck and you can't press them down. If you have the choice and are buying a digital piano for practice, please go with the Yamaha.

11:34 "Very few weak links in there" Casio's "Electric Grand" i.e. Yamaha CP80 sound might still sound like a toy. People don't seem to demo it much. But that's 1 out of 700. 🙂

I have both CASIO S350 and Yamaha P-45B , The yamaha is way better for a real piano feeling , the piano sound is soo better. But to have fun go for casio

Well - to have fun Yamaha has a smart rhythm accompaniment that I like a lot. And the sounds and feel of the Casio to me is just toy level, with noisy bouncy keys. And only 64 polyphony - not seriously, no way, sorry for being so blunt.

Look, I am between buying a S350 or the Yamaha P-25. I'd like to buy the S350 but in terms of how it sounds, Im a bit worried if it sounds good enough, I mean, similar to a real piano.

@@ulisescortaza3143 The action on the P-125 is nice, has some weight, but is a simple action that seems to lack escapement. The Roland FP-30 has a more sophisticated feel with escapement and isn't too heavy. I prefer an action on the light side. There is also a warmer piano patch and a wonderful wurly patch on the Yamaha.
