Just a short drive from Gotham lies Wayne Manor, surprisingly, it's nestled in the Nottinghamshire countryside! Also known as Wollaton Hall it was our parkrun tourism venue this week, and what a fabulous destination it was!
This weekend was not just about running-it was a full family experience. We completed the parkrun with our friends, the Vidler family, and Ruth volunteered as a barcode scanner. Then a great time of post parkrun faff as we explored the historic hall and its Natural History Museum.
Running at Wollaton Hall feels like stepping into history. This grand Elizabethan mansion, dating back to the 1580s, offers a stunning setting for the weekly parkrun. Its imposing architecture and centuries-old presence add a unique sense of wonder as you run through its beautiful parkland and round the lake.
For fans of Batman, Wollaton Hall holds a special cinematic role as Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises! It’s hard not to imagine Bruce Wayne himself strolling these halls or training on the very paths we ran. The kids (or perhaps more Jim and I) had fun imagining Batman’s secret lair while racing through the park!
The morning was especially exciting for Ewan, who managed to hit his third consecutive sub-30 minute parkrun! His determination over the past few weeks has been inspiring.
Wollaton Park is breathtaking, offering runners sweeping views of Wollaton Hall, ancient trees, and expansive greenery. The winding paths take you past stunning lakes and woodlands, and you can’t help but feel a sense of tranquility. A true highlight of the run is seeing the park’s resident herds of deer roaming freely. We spotted a few as we ran, grazing peacefully, which made the experience feel even more magical - like something out of a storybook.
After the run, we took the opportunity to explore the Natural History Museum inside Wollaton Hall. The museum offers a fascinating collection of exhibits, from fossils to taxidermy, which captured the kids' imaginations. The highlight, however, was the special exhibition by Willard Wigan, renowned for his miniature sculptures. Wigan’s work is extraordinary, featuring intricate sculptures so small they fit inside the eye of a needle!
It was another perfect mix of fitness, friendship, and family time. If you’re looking for a parkrun with a bit of everything, Wollaton Hall certainly delivers!
