🏏Archie Jackson: Triumph and Tragedy: Born in Rutherglen, Scotland in 1909, Archibald 'Archie' Jackson emigrated to Australia with his family at the age of four. Living in Ferdinand Street, Balmain, Archie developed a love of cricket playing on the nearby Birchgrove Oval - the home ground of the Balmain District Cricket Club. Joining the Balmain club, at 15 he became one of the youngest first-graders on debut in Sydney grade cricket and remains it's record youngest centurion. He was one of the youngest players selected for the New South Wales cricket team, beating his older contemporary Don Bradman into first-class cricket. Selected in the Australian Cricket Team for the fourth Test of the 1928-29 Ashes series at the Adelaide Oval, opening the batting Jackson made 164 - which remains a record for the youngest Australian batsman on Test debut hitting a boundary of Harold Larwood's bowling to bring-up his century. Sadly, Jackson later contracted tuberculosis, a bacterial lung disease which for at that time there was no cure. During the fourth Bodyline Test of the 1932-33 series, Jackson died in a Brisbane hospital at the age of 23. Buried in the Field of Mars Cemetery in Sydney, Jackson's pallbearers were the Australian batting line-up of Bill Woodfull, Victor Richardson, Bill Ponsford, Alan Kippax, Bert Oldfield and Don Bradman.

Archie reminded cricket lovers of Victor Trumper. Such was his grace.

G’day Dean. Thanks so much for that 🙏 I’ve been wanting to do the video for a while. Went to Ferdinand St earlier this year and by coincidence there was a match being played on Birchgrove Oval by the Sydney club which originates from the old Balmain club. Really appreciate your feedback.

A moving tribute to a wonderful cricketer whose life was cut short abruptly by a disease which has taken its toll of millions of people. Learnt of Archie's record 4th wicket stand with Bradman at The Oval just today while watching the finals of the World Test series between Australia and India. Congratulations on producing such a fine tribute to Archie Jackson.

Such a tragic loss. Archie was probably as good as Don. Such a sad tale, remember forever the incredible talent of Archie Jackson.

Thanks Renato 🙏 I’ve been a fan of Archie’s for many years and it was great to go on a pilgrimage to Ferdinand Street and Birchgrove Oval. A tragically short life that should never be forgotten.

As someone who got diagnosed with Pulmonary TB last year, watching this made my eyes wet. Such a tragic way to go. Archie had so much potential, but a disease whose treatment was not known at the time cut short his life.

@@theknightwatchman Indeed it must've been. Yes, I'm doing fine, mate. My 9-month long treatment regime will come to an end before Christmas, most probably (fingers crossed). Wish Archie would've been born in the 21st century...

A short life sadly. Terrible disease. It was possible to recover from but not for poor Archie.

Yes many believe Jackson and Bradman were on par with each other. Jackson was younger than Bradman when he debuted in first-class cricket and his poor health affected his later test performances.
