(Debate in Parliament: Budget of the Presidency)
Deciding that South Africa's new political course should be determined by a Government of National Unity (GNU) was the right decision. Likewise, the FF Plus also made the right decision to be part of this government.
The decision was accompanied by clearly stated guidelines and intentions: Firstly, respect for the Constitution, the entire Bill of Rights and the rule of law. In addition, non-racialism and -sexism and a few other conditions. That was the right decision, too.
The FF Plus is fully committed to the work and success of the GNU for the sake of South Africa, on the following conditions:
The party will not be assimilated into any other political party in the GNU, and will remain a niche party for the Afrikaner and other minority communities, and it will also remain committed to self-determination in all its various forms.
With regard to the Presidency, there exists a great void in terms of oversight. It has to be rectified. This subject has already been broached by the Zondo Commission.
The GNU's highest priority is economic growth. The whole of South Africa is needed to achieve this, and an oversight body over the Presidency would play a key role in it.
In Britain, such a structure is made up of the chairpersons of the respective portfolio committees with the aim of discussing policies and policy directions with the prime minister.
An oversight mechanism over the Presidency may not be used to fuel feuds or carry out personal vendettas against the president as person.
It is not a political platform and its main aim is to sincerely seek solutions to specific problems. It could, and should, be implemented in the sincere pursuit of helping South Africa along on the road to recovery.
