When I worked on the boats in 1974 in South Africa.....we were trained to make these as part of our training......they were used for throwing a line for the tie line to be pulled on board......I love how easily it can be done your way.....thanks for that

As a trainee seaman, back in the 70s, I was taught to make this without a jig. True seamanship. It was attached to a longer line and called a heaving line to send mooring lines from ship to shore.

Or tie it around a table tennis ball for a floating key ring for your boat keys, or other things you handle near the water to prevent them from sinking if dropped. Be sure to test that it is buoyant enough to actually keep it floating.

Made a few in my USN days. Steel / lead monkeys fist for heaving line. To advance to 3rd class one of the required knots along with a bowline of course. We didn't use a Jig and fists were 10x bigget.

The way I made mine was about 3-4 inches of unweaved cord from my Monkey Fist to the weave to give it a flailing morningstar vibe. Then made my handle using a Box Braid with a small retention pommel at the end. Gave one to my Sifu and each of the Black Belts at the dojo as a parting gift before I left home.

I’ve seen HUGE versions pf this knot tied to the sides of fishing boats, being used as fenders.

This must take practice, you make it look so easy 👍🏻😁. Another great use is for throwing lines over branches for tarps.

A monkey's fist knot was traditionally used by sailors to add extra weight at the end of a heaving line, used to throw a cable from ship to shore. The knot, often containing an extra weight, would be tied at one end of the line, and the other end would be tied to the heavier cable.

The "monkey fist" comes ffom the days of sailing ships. You would tie a line on it and either throw it or put it in a blunder bus or cannon to shoot a line to another ship or the shore. They varied in size.

I made a similar thing but ised a co2 cartridge. Was easier to work with and not as bulky. Not as hard as a ball bearing bit still packs a good wallup.

I usually note on these things that many states still carry a "slung shot" on their prohibited concealed-weapons list. This is exactly a slung shot, though typically rather smaller than the historical items which used a piece of "shot" (cannister or grape) intended to be fired from a cannon. This was a very common sailor's weapon in the past.

I use cobra knots to make braided lanyards. I've always wondered how to weave it into itself... I'll have to find that threading needle 👍

It should be noted that in a large amount of places this type of not is considered a weapon on the level of a knife or borderline gun (depending on location)

A heavy sock with a pool ball in the toe and the top of the sock folded over and tied off. Zip ties work great for this. And you won't be bummed if you toss... er... 'lose' it.

I have one of those yellow monkey fist tools to hold the ball. I made my monkey fist with an 1 1/2" chromed ball with a much longer lanyard. That short handle you made looks great but it limits the velocity at which the ball can impact the target. The one I made has a much longer handle that can be shortened if you need to, but when I swing with the lanyard fully extended I can impact the target with much more force because I can actually swing it around my head to greatly build up its impact velocity.

I found a steel ball of comparable size @ work once,and showed it to a guy I worked with who made paracord bracelets and crafts,explaining what a monkey's fist is and telling him how much they charged for them. He asked me if he could take the ball home with him to see if he could make one,so i said yes. A week later he brought me the finished product and gave it to me,and he did an amazing job! I tried to give him money for it but he wouldn't take it,telling me he only wanted to see if he could do it. He was a pretty cool guy.

Years ago my friend tied one of these with some old rope then told me why it's called what is called. It was seriously Abby to watch this happen right before my eyes. At this time i knew nothing about the cool things that can be done with cordage. It still amazes me to this day

From a legal perspective this definitely makes an excellent key 🔑 holder. The ball knocker part keeps it in your pocket, and the grip eliminates the possibility of dropping your keys in a compromising situation.

Nice!!! I have something similar, but with a meditation ball. That way, when it "knocks" it also chimes. :)

I have a Monkey’s Fist, it has a steel ballbearing in the middle, the knot itself is made from the cord that goes along the edges of a fishing net.

When I was a.kid, We use to make Necklaces out of Monkey Fists so we could get into any place with them and always have a weapon at hand. They can split ppl wide open.

I was making a get back whip for my son when it dawned on me that a much shorter version would make an excellent door knocker. Replace the panic snap with a solid or split ring and mount with a rope loop and a metal place to protect the door and you have a custom door knocker. Donald

I MADE IT! First making your at home jig then watching this video about 10 times. Took a few tries. Instead of a lacing needle I had to use a small screw driver made it more difficult but same result

I do the monkey fist a bit different way: Starting the new direction not immediately at the point the previous one finished, but from the opposite face. Then it's easier to tight, looks more nice and both ropes are at the same corner.

And if you ever need to get into a burning building, a monkey fist will take out a giant glass window more easily than an axe. And there are a multitude of situations in real life where you need cord to help you out of a jam - clothes line, fishing line, automobile load tie-downs, package ties, emergency suspension, ..... A monkey fist with 11 passes of paracord and 2" of paracord lanyard can give you about 50ft of Paracord 550 which can be disaggregated into 50 x 7 = 350ft of single paracord strands that can support 50-100 lbs each. Oh, if you are left with that beautiful chrome plated steel ball in the core, you can use it as a certified baoding ball to strengthen your hands and help meditate yourself out of your predicament. The list of uses of MF Impact tools can go on and on. It is not clear to me why some states or countries classify these devices as unlawful weapons while they allow people to stroll down main street carrying firearms, hunting knives, clawed hammers, 12" scissors, razors and more. But like other intimidating devices, if you keep you mF impact tools in your backpack or trunk, or other location where they are not visible and you clearly do not have any intent on wielding them around with malintent, then you are not likely to get into any trouble. Very nice! thank you. For 3/16" or 1/4" cord, you can unscrew a retractable ball-point pen and use that for a lacing fid. Thanks for your instruction. (put that little bit of info out there with your instruction. Everybody HAS an old ball-point pen laying around.

The handle should be minimum 15 inches. If used for self defense purposes that is. Two feet would be better. But probably illegal to carry. A chain with a small padlock locked on the last link works well for self defense situations and can be used for many other purposes which makes considering it an illegal weapon very difficult to do. And a chain is much more durable. Not downing what you made because that is some good craftsmanship and looks cool.

Yeah we use these to throw lines over the edge of the pier. I once knew someone skilled at rope tying who could make a monkey fist club, a really scary weapon as no ordinary man sees a bunch of rope as potentially dangerous...

It catches my attention at 2:30AM, then I get the handle and it starts to look like literal wizardry.

It's a new version of an old illegal weapon called a slapjack. A monkey fist by itself made pretty like that isn't illegal until you put that ball bearing inside, now it's illegal.

This is basically a sap, but made out of rope and a steel ball, instead of the more traditional hard leather pouch filled with buckshot. :P If you don't know what a sap is, it's basically a handy dandy pocket sized club that you can fit in your pocket, or sling over your belt.

Have used these in weird underground clubs. Good fun.

Is there a limit as to how heavy a ball we could tie rope around and use as a tool such as featured in this video? I've got a 12 pound shot put that I would love to attach rope to and use as a workout on the beach. Can rope support a steel ball that heavy? I love these videos!

Small suggestion... for effect... Tie everything up very very very tightly... And use one of those meltable waxes's/plastics/... instead of a steel ball.. Then melt it... Be it a cold firm playing dough....plastic wax or whatever... use heat gasoline alcohol... whatever...just make sure not to destroy the cord you're using and make sure that the fluid can come out... Is it better hollow... Sure.... Depends on application obviously

I just finished my first door knocker. Sort of not as good as yours. My metal monkey knuckle is still showing abit. But I finished and it took me maybe 3 hrs.
