I found your video after having to get rid of my pothos due to an infestation of mealy bugs. I cried. She was beautiful with 8-ft vines that I had spread out across the top of my walls. They came in hiding in a goldfish plant.

I can confirm that mealy bugs like the fuzzy African Violets. 😖 I also battle them on my jade plants as well as Hoyas and Kalanchoe succulents. I also find them very satisfying to squish.

For me, my Hoya Linearis and all Echeverias are the biggest Mealybug attractors. The Linearis has had both Mealies and Root Mealies. As for alternative natural predators, the successful ones in my experience (by collecting them from my garden) are Ladybird larvae, Lacewings or (my favourite) Minute Pirate Bugs. The Ladybird larvae are more voracious than the Ladybird adults but do better for young Mealybugs. Also, the Mealybug destroyer lady beetle, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, doesn't tolerate our cold winters, so is only effective in warmer climates. Another thing to note is to avoid unnecessary applications of nitrogen fertiliser on plants with Mealybugs. High rates of nitrogen coupled with regular irrigation may stimulate tender new plant growth as well as Mealybug egg production 😬😬😬

Sounds like you've got a good handle on dealing with mealybugs, Carey! Ladybird larvae and Pirate Bugs are great allies. Great tip about avoiding excess nitrogen. Thanks for sharing your experience and advice! 🌿🐞

I’ve been growing Hoya for over 20 years and I can honestly say mealy bugs are being transferred at an alarming rate with the explosion of cuttings being sold now. Adults are easy to see and spot treat with isopropyl alcohol. The issue is with eggs. I quarantine plants for 4 months or more, sealed in bags, and still find mealy appearing after this time. The eggs seem to hatch whenever they think it’s safe to do so😂 My best advise, look at the health and vigour of any plant or cutting you may wish to purchase. Look for yellowing, deformed or dehydration of leaves. Don’t buy in late autumn, winter or very early spring. You are more likely to get cuttings from plants which have been chopped up to save them from mealy, root mealy, over watering, root rot etc. Upon receipt of any cutting, soak it in a Bug Clear solution for Vine Weevil (not the standard one), then quarantine as you would for any new plant.

This is such a fantastic idea for a series. I personally have had mealy bug issues on some alocasias and some marantas, but mainly on orchids. It's funny, most of my hoyas are pretty close to some orchids, yet so far, the mealies left them alone. But they go for every orchid - from phalaenopsis with sturdy leaves, paphs, and some dendrobium (especially nobile), angrecum, and so on, to even the most delicate thin leafed oncidium hybrid. The only orchids they don't like are jewel orchids, vandas and denphals. Looking forward to your thoughts on thrips' top picks (i yearn for the years i didn't know what a thrip was, those were the days ...) Have an awesometacular day ✌️

@@Houseplantygoodness Oh dear, yes. No matter how much of a treehugger, as my buddy tends to put it, I am, I wish nothing but the very worst to thrips. May they forever be stepping on legos and always have wet toilet seats and hot pillows. On an unrelated note: Thank you. I haven't been in a particularly good place mentally (let's not go into it more, after all, beating around the bush is a very planty thing to do), and not only is my plant collection a source of joy, but so are you. I treat your videos as little brain-vacations and for that I am grateful. So yeah, stay safe and hopefully never step on any legos (or leca balls) :)

Hi, thank you for the video, I tried much against them and never really got rid of them 😞 I tried that australian ladybugs but it was such a struggle since they fly to the plant light and die so a net is necessary and the need to get sprayed with water. In the end it didn't work. Neem oil did not work and pesticides did work but you have to be consistent and repeat it for long time otherwise they will be back. For the most time when I catch and kill them by hand 💚
@Houseplantygoodness
@Houseplantygoodness 8 месяцев назад
Hi there! It sounds like you've had quite the challenge with mealybugs. 😞 It's frustrating when even the natural predators like Australian ladybugs don't work out as planned. You're right about needing consistency with pesticides; they often require repeated applications. Manual removal can be effective, but it's definitely time-consuming. Keep at it, and hopefully, you'll get on top of the issue. Your persistence is admirable! 💚🌿

Great video Memo, hope this became a series! My mealies really love my phalaenopsis orchids, the crown of the orchid is a very good hiding place for them. They also love Alocasias in general too, not only they hide well between the leafs, they are also able to live on the roots as well. My platycerium seedlings and my Haworthias are also their favourites. Mealies are really hard to get rid off, but they dont seem to cause any long lasting damage. I use insecticidal soap with permethrin to treat my plants, it seem effective for mealies and scales

Phalaenopsis is another one. My mealy bug problem began with this type of orchid which I had for many years with out a pest problem then suddenly these walking cotton balls appeared. The burning question is why this plant? How and where did they come from? And why did they then then appear on a plant across the room skip over the plant next to it, and attack the one after that? This is really weird. They don't have wings so, it not like they can fly.

Phalaenopsis orchids can be tricky with mealybugs. It's always a mystery how pests choose their targets. Sometimes they just seem to know where to go. 🤔🌿

The only plants in over 40 years of raising plants to get mealybugs were Hoyas, Begonias and String of Hearts. I never had seen with Mealybugs before I got my first Hoya 2 + Hoya. I have purged all of my 200+ Hoyas because I was sick of their drama.

@@Houseplantygoodness Yeah mealybugs, Flat Mites and all the other drama that's associated with Hoyas was too much for me, but I also purged over 400 other types of plants this year as well. Now I have 100+ Cacti, Euphorbias and other Succulents. I never knew Succulents were so diverse, between the Desert, Jungle and rainforest types I can still feel like I'm in a jungle without the stress. I dont want to jinx it but my hoyas dont have mealybugs, some do get scale. What does get mealybugs in my home are alocasia polly, phaleanopsis orchids, african violets, streptocarpus. I tried natural predators, never worked for mealybugs

The only plant in my house that has had a mealy is an alocasia ninja and it was sent to me that way.
