2:12 These are Brown Quails. They have been introduced into New Zealand from Australia in the 1860's and 1870's. I don't know why, but it's probably to replace the extinct New Zealand Quail. Today they can be found on a few offshore islands and parts of North Island.

BackpackerGuide.NZ we went yesterday and it was amazing! We didn’t join the guided tour, just headed out through the bush and was immediately surrounded by birds. Pretty much checked off everything on the list, except for the kiwi. The feeding stations were great places to get good photos of at least the bellbirds and Hihi. They were good to get a visual of these birds, then it was easy to spot them elsewhere. We didn’t get up to the visitor center or lighthouse this trip; kept pausing on the track because we heard a new birdcall and just had to find who was making the sound. Did get down to the penguin boxes and saw a couple adults nesting with their fluffy chick.

Thanks for sharing, I have been doing research on and off for little over a year now and have not come across, this gem on my own research. This is basically what I have been dreaming about (being able to see dozens of different bird species not in a zoo, especially the Takahe and Kaka), this will defiantly be pretty much the first thing I do when I can get over there.

Hello Laura and Robin, I love your videos, you are really helping me to plan my one life trip to NZ next January. Could you compare your experiences in Tiritiri Matangi and Urupukapuka island please? I don't have enough time for both islands and it will be easier for me to visit Urupukapuka. Thank you very much!
@NZPocketGuide
@NZPocketGuide 2 года назад
In all fairness they are both extremely similar so it is not worth the headache for you to even think twice. Enjoy Urupukapuka, there will be birds there too, just a tad less. Check nzpocketguide.com, we have full guides of the Bay Of Islands for you 💜

No, I have not. I was in NZ for a little over a month last November, but only spent just a day in the Auckland area. I brought back many thousands of photos and a good percentage of them were birds! :) That was my first trip back to NZ, since leaving in 1969.

@@NZPocketGuide Probably Zealandia in Wellington. Conservation efforts in NZ had been tremendous over the decades! I recalled that when I was there in the '60s, it was very difficult to find a Tui. Now, they are everywhere.

Thanks for your super honest feedback mate :) We did not capture any bird song in good enough quality to showcase in the video sadly due to our limited hardware. To be frank though, nothing beats the experience itself!
