You can reduce scratching damage by providing plenty of places to scratch and clip the tips of their claws. Only the sharp tips need clipping. Start them off as kittens and they'll accept having their claws clipped as adults.
Exactly!!! People will take the time to trim their dog's nails, but forget about doing the cat's. Our cats have had theirs clipped since they were little, and they don't mind at all. Our dogs hate it, and I have to have my husband hold them while I clip. (Jan Griffiths).
Always clipped my cats claws. They also only scratched on their posts/towers. If they ever started to scratch on furniture I'd just put a scratching post there and the problem would be sorted
Took me a moment to get over not mentioning how barbaric declawing is when talking about how much cats love scratching things, until I remembered that Australia has their priorities right and it's mostly outlawed there. Meanwhile, in the US, some vets encourage it. :(
Frankie Bays New York State outlawed de-clawing in 2019. However, whoever wants to de-claw their cat can just drive over the border to New Jersey, or Pennsylvania. I’m still glad NYS outlawed it.
More and more vets in the US are against declawing cats. It is cruel and barbaric. There are a few vets who still do the procedure but a vast majority of vets will not perform the procedure and advise their clients about other means of less-invasive methods of dealing with scratching. The ASPCA and other animal activist groups are striving to ban declawing across the US and hopefully one day all 50 states will outlaw this barbaric practice.
@@lisahorsepony I can't wait for that day. Any vet that mutilates is not one I want my pets to go to. Our vet does not declaw, and is very much against it. He does sell Soft Paws nail covers at his practice. (Jan Griffiths).
@@douglasgriffiths3534 soft paws is a great alternative to declawing. I trim my cat's claws and provide scratching posts for them. Occasionally they do claw my furniture but it is a small price to pay for cat ownership. If people are that worried about their furniture, then they should not have a cat.
There are still places where you can have your cat declawed... no no no! Please don't do this! Start early with trimming their nails and check them often if you are concerned about your furniture.
Linda I couldn't agree more. No one makes people get cats. If they can't handle a cat scratching their furniture and don't want to get them scratching posts they don't deserve cats!!
Is amputation of fingers you can say the nails are attached to the bone so when you declaws them you Take off their digits...please please don’t do this it leaves the cat defenseless and you will have huge behavior problems since is TRAUMATIC to the cat, if you even think of this if the THOUGHT CROSSES THE MIND PLEASE GIVE THEM AWAY SO THEY CAN GO TO A BETTER HOME!!!
Declawing (mutilation) also prevents the cat from digging in with his claws and giving the shoulder, forearm, and upper back muscles the workout they need daily. Also the paws become "frozen", and the cat can no longer flex their fingers the way they're supposed to. The conformation of the foot is changed as well, and they walk with a stilted gait, with no normal breakover at the toes. I can't understand why vets who are supposed to ensure our pets stay healthy could do something like this. It's animal cruelty, plain and simple. (Jan Griffiths).
2 chinchillas not 1 hold them not alone! They need a lot of space, special food (hay) not sweets and they can live for 20 years (in a good environment) they are really special and nothing for "by the way". Nocturnal animals, jumps a lot and the love to chew they feet are really sensitive so no grid under the feet, clean every day they poop/pee a lot and so on... pls read a Chinchilla adviser u can do a lot wrong to the Fluffballs and enjoy :3 i had 2 of them ahh and NEVER pull/hold the tail
They may not milk the new moms, but I’m guessing at that. What I can say is if milk production is anything like humans, the more you empty, the more you make. Of course there are exceptions. But that’s how a mom can nurse twins😊
I talk to my cat all day long and talk out loud when I’m not talking to him... he turned out to be the best buddy ever.... he talks back all the time... it’s hysterical
Da Blonde No. Cats kill millions of wild creatures every year. This is a particular problem in Australia and New Zealand where the wildlife is unique and threatened.
Alpacas DO have teeth! I used to raise them. Had one alpaca whose teeth would grow so long that he would have had trouble eating if I didn't get them filed down (by a vet) periodically.
6:50 Desexing (and a chip, is a must in my country) is a must al over the world for dogs and cats. We have enough pets. The rest is living in the streets in terrible conditions.
Dr Chris, you said that a kitten is ok to be taken away from their mother at 6 weeks, if you could tell people 10 weeks is preferred would be appreciated.
I personally, firmly believe that kittens and puppies should stay with their mother for at least twelve (12) weeks. They are more settled, well behaved, less stressed and etc. because the mother has more time to mature and discipline them.
STAYING WITH MOTHER LONGER IS BETTER: Dr. Chris, I wish you had stated the later age - 9 to 12 weeks - for kittens to be taken away from their mothers. The FeLV/FIV test is the most stable at 12 weeks of age, and all kittens need to be tested for these diseases (Mom can be tested way before babies are born). Plus, the 1st distemper vacc. is due at 9 weeks. Deworming a kitten happens at 2,4,6,8 weeks of age. I have seen many kittens taken from their mothers at 6 weeks of age vs. 9 to 12. For the overall health of the kittens, the difference 3 to 12 weeks longer makes staying with mom - (thus 9 to 12 week old kittens) - is worth the extra work! Of course, the above situation is speaking of healthy kittens. Really sick kittens will probably not be able to be with Mom. Usually, by the time meds and mending (full health recovery ) has happened, 9 to 12 weeks of age has been reached; however, not always, and then sick kitten(s) (now over their illness) can be put back with mom and any other siblings. Usually, if we see URI, the entire family has it, but not always. There are some situations where kittens must be taken away from mom at a very early age or early age. Mom is not producing enough milk, or bad milk. Mom is sick and taking medications. Mom rejects kittens. Mom is killed. Mom is feral (4 to 6 weeks of age is preferable to take kittens away from feral mom, so kittens do not become scared of people. But if kittens seem friendly with people, regardless of fear mom shows for people, it is o.k. to leave them with mom). Even when a human is the caregiver, he/she should not be giving up the kittens at 6 weeks of age for adoption, unless an emergency has happened to the caregiver and he/she can no longer take care of the kittens. Then, it is much preferable for another caregiver to take these kittens until 9 to 12 weeks of age.
I brush my cat quite often, plus to prevent hairballs, and save a little money, I put a bit of vaseline on his paw to help the fur slide through. You can buy flavored fur ball stuff, but most cats will just lick off the vaseline at a much cheaper price (and no chemical flavoring).
I would like to say how much I enjoy watching your videos Dr. Brown, and if you read my comment, would be greatly appreciated...and if you could comment back I could use some feedback. Rogue is now my 7 yr old cat...He is a big boy at 14lbs...when he was five,he developed fatty deposits on his liver...due to his food. He was very sick, had to be tube fed for over a month, with steroids added, and vitamins... After bloodworks, his liver healed itself...however,he can not tolerate cat food containing corn, soy,or wheat... He has been on a grain free cat food since...now the vet he had said no more than 1 cup per day dry food..with canned food ( 1/2 can per feeding),2-3 times per week, cutting back 1/2 cup of the dry food.. I watched your video on cat food... Problem is...he gets 1/2 cup dry in the morning...yet by 3pm he starts talking for food...he is fed at 5pm his other half...yet come evening,he wants more food around 9pm.... Is he not getting enough is my question...should I add in another 1/2 cup... He is solid muscle,an indoor cat...has no overhang under his belly... Now my second question... Concerning his coat...can steroids change his hair...he is a long haired cat...or was...had an undercoat with long hair over top...his mom was short coat, his dad was semi long haired...he is not Persian or Himalayan... His coat has no long hairs now...instead it looks like sheep wool...thick and curly... I had to start taking him to a groomers...he gets shaved... This last time by 5 months, his coat had grown out to about 4 inches of very thick wool undercoat...now instead of twice a year to get shaved...he needs to go every 3 months...it grows that fast... I have never had a cat like him...my other cat is 9lbs,2yrs old,and is on the same food, getting the same amount per day....indoor as well... And is doing great... I am from canada by the way...plz keep the videos coming... Both are neutered as well.
I used to be a vet tech best job l ever had. I have 6 cats all my furbabies from weeks to 14 years old. Oreo isn't 14 year old. All my furbabies have personalities they are so so sweet and l would not want anything to happen to them❤🐱❤🐱❤🐱❤🐱❤🐱❤🐱❤❤❤❤❤❤ Another great episode ❤❤❤❤❤🐘❤🐱❤Declawing is a Big No No. New do this to your cat. I have always spayed and neutered all my cats. Best idea ever. Dr. Chris is definitely right about a female can have a lot of cats. My cats have always been strays because I find a cat and they usually need medical care. Strays are always better to have. Instead of a store bought cat. Adopting a cat is also great as well from SPCA
Jan Griffiths here. I used to be a vet tech as well, but had to leave the profession after 5 years. I hated to put pets down, especially one of my own. It really got to me.
I'm also against keeping animals in ZOOS but being kept so well and to be loved so much is worth it cos in countries where these magnificent beings are native to don't have the respect or the compassion required !
Some places do a lot better than others. Not all Zoos take poor care of their animals. But at the same time not all of them go above and beyond like the one showed in this video
No animals should be made to perform! These are wild animals not your pet that raises its leg whenever you want it to! These animals belong in reserves with thousands of acres to Rome and a human to be able to take care of them when they have problems but they should not be kept in cages!
GO MILK LESS : The lady who owns the working goat dairy farm can’t love goats that much. Milk is only produced when the goat is pregnant and after she gives birth, so the goat is kept pregnant all the time. When males are born, these baby goats are immediately torn from their mothers and thrown on a dirty truck, and cold and dying sent to slaughter. The female baby goats are immediately torn from their mothers, because the working goat farm wants the mother’s milk to sell to people. Organic means that if a goat gets sick, they are sent to slaughter immediately, if they are lucky. The organic farmer could just ignore the goats illness, until the goat dies. There are NO HAPPY GOATS or COWS on dairy farms. It is absolutely as gruesome a business as slaughtering animals for meat!
