Harlem is a retired Carriage Horse, from New York City. He is living out his days at Gentle Giants Draft Horse rescue. He weighs upwards of 2000- 2200lbs, (950-1000kg)! A big, gentle giant: watch as this lovable horse gets adjusted by Dr. Doug Willen, The Animal Cracker and even goes thru a tickle session at the half way point!
If you would like to support or adopt... here are the links below!
Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue: www.gentlegiantsdrafthorseres...
Gentle Friends: gentlefriends.org/adopt
Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue was formed to facilitate the rescue of Draft and Draft Cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
The Primary Function of the Rescue
GGDHR promotes the benefits and uses of Draft horses of all breeds as trail mounts, schooling mounts, and competition mounts. We educate the public through the use of brochures, pamphlets, and public presentations on the topics of: horse slaughter and cruelty, the responsibilities of horse ownership, the over-population and over-breeding of horses, and how over-breeding contributes to the horse slaughter industry. Learn more about our educational outreach here.
Slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. We attend the same public auctions, choose the Draft horses we feel are the most viable candidates for rescue, and then outbid the meat buyer.
We transport the horses to our facility, where the horses are quarantined for a minimum of 21 days for illness. During that time, we begin to evaluate each individual horse and learn its personality and training level on the ground and under saddle. We ride the horses under many different circumstances, and evaluate for what level of rider the horse would best be suited. During this time, the horse also receives any necessary veterinary care, farrier care, dental care, and training.
When the horses have completed their quarantine, they are available to be placed into adoptive homes under a strict contract. The horses are advertised on our website and on the internet to help find suitable adoptive homes. Each horse is evaluated with its prospective adopter, and if we feel the horse and rider are a suitable match for one another, then the adopter may apply to adopt that horse. At that time, GGDHR would perform a background and reference check, and may at times also conduct home visits, if deemed necessary.
GGDHR is primarily funded by adoption fees, private donations, and sponsorships which facilitate the rescue of future draft horses from slaughter.

@@Mariana-ud7dw yeah horses express more than you think. Every rider and horseman know this. They all have spots the love to be scratched. Thats why many horses loove to be brushed (it is also to avoid sore spots when equipment is one the horse ). Mostly buddy - horses standing head to head and scrub each others wrist. 😁

We have Percherons & one loves her belly button to be scratched. Another loves scratches right above his tail. Some love their withers/manes scratched. They all make “the face” & start rubbing their faces on /nibbling at the stall walls. So cute & funny…and pure bliss, indeed! Sometimes, they’ll even start rubbing their mouths on your back or arm…gotta be careful tho, cuz they’ll try to reciprocate the scratching for you & can nip you! (Ouch!) 😂🤣

What sweet eyes🥰. We adopted a beautiful horse, that looked similar to Harlem, but was a bit bigger. He first worked doing parades in the Marines, he then worked as a police horse in Central Park. We were looking for a calm horse that would do well with our kids. We had a lovely farm in Colorado, with big fields and a lake. We were asked by some friends of ours if we would consider taking him; they had a horse rescue service, and thought he was a good fit. Of course we said yes❣️He was the sweetest, our kids adored him. He would start neighing when he heard the bus coming. We had 8 children, 7 of them adopted as well. There couldn’t have been a perfect fit🤗. They gave him constant love and attention, and he was a great source of healing for them as well ( they came from abusive backgrounds). We had him for 5 years before having a stroke. I don’t think that we have ever gotten over it. Just a little story: in the summer months, he’d take the kids bareback and with out bridle down to the lake for a swim. He would wade in chest deep while the kids dove off of his back. They would splash him and he would throw his head , splashing the kids back. Thanks for bringing up such lovely memories ♥️.

You can say that again! As a small girl, I met one once, I think he was a retired race horse, and he said so much to me with just a look, I just freaked out! I literally ran away from him! I'm still trying to get over that experience, and I just love horses now. I've always been a animal lover. I hope I get to ride a horse one day. Hopefully not one like that retired race horse. I think he was in a lot of pain and was suffering. My problem is that I'm just too sensitive to their feelings, I guess...

This is the second video I've watched on this channel. The first was a badly abused draft horse named Keeper. The difference in the expression in the eyes is so different. Keeper looked like he was about to cry because he was just sure he was going to be hurt because of his past. And Harlem has a look of wanting to understand yet trust. I can see that Harlem knows love. I hope that someday Keeper feels safe and loved, too. Hugs to them both.

NYC carriage horses are treated exceptionally well, and the veterinarian is always checking on them, there's more stringent rules on working time, rest periods and temperature restrictions on the carriage horses than there are with OSHA and human workers! The carriages are light weight, there's videos of NYC carriages being pushed back into the garage by one employee easily, they have ball bearings in the wheels. There's another video I remember on youtube of a guy who pulled a large horse carriage by himself, and as I remember 9 people got on and filled the seats and he pulled it down the street and back again, it was not real easy to get it started from a stand still but once moving he had no trouble pulling it. 6:35. Belly scratch" what do you think of that?" Harlem says" how much for a twice weekly scratch dude?" While doing his best Mr. Ed impression 😄 He is beautiful I'm so glad he will not be adopted out, just spoiled there. He's worked very hard enough in his life. Yay you got to ride him! Was it awesome or what? Riding a draft horse is so different and so very cool 😎.

What a sweet, good boy. ♥️ Harlem!!! Just one thing - at the end when you were working on his right hip - look at both legs before trying to adjust! If you notice, he had his left rear leg cocked ( hoof up, resting position) - that means all of his weight was on the hip you were trying to adjust?? That makes it twice as hard for both of you. Next time, shift him to the left, so he puts his weight equally, thereby relaxing his right hip a bit.

He seems to be gentleness personified. I'm so glad he's retired now after what had to be a somewhat stressful life in all weathers in New York. I imagine though that in very bad weather the horses got to stay indoors. Still, the country life must suit this sweet horse. I could sink into a trough of despair at everything that animals endure at the hands of humans. All I can do is give to many animal charities. It is still never enough and there is an endless need.
