Play 1 should be 2 points, definitely a pass that NEVER had a chance. 5.21.3 was created and was meant for alley oop plays that have a trajectory and a chance of entering the basket, even if the defense touches. It was to help take the judgement out of the hands of the official. Knowing the history of why a rule/case play was made is important. Below is your correct reference for THIS play. 4.41.4 SITUATION B: A1's three-point try is short and below ring level when it hits the shoulder of: (a) A2; or (b) B1 and rebounds to the backboard and through the basket. RULING: The three-point try ended when it was obviously short and below the ring. However, since a live ball went through the basket, two points are scored in both (a) and (b).

Play#1: 3 pts as it was released outside the 2pt area. Play#2: I'd much rather see the Trail call that since his line of sight is better to see the blue player drop his shoulder and the Lead can't since he's blocked by the defender. Though with the C's stroll-in-the-park attitude, he allowed this situation to happen. If they want to get it right, then the C should have something to say and the crew should come out of this with a double technical. Play#3: Someone has to tell the Lead to stop ball-watching, and that's about all there is to say about that. However, if a player absolutely gets blown up in that screening action and the C doesn't have a call, then go get it. Play#4: For FIBA, once you are in the front court you do not have the ability to go into the backcourt on throw-ins. So, I would have to call this a backcourt violation. Play#5: This basket would have counted if it happened at any other time in the game other than at the end of a quarter or OT. BP: In this situation, if there was a double whistle, then the Lead and Trail could come together to see who had what; however, since the Lead showed first, he would be the one to change his call instead of what happened with the C going over to report the foul. Though, the Lead shouldn't have called it first anyway, but the C should not have shown...post and hold regardless of what your call is.

@fromtheoutside, @jonathanhouser8194, Sadly, it would *not* count in play 5. The play has been legally touched. By *FIBA rule*, the ball becomes DEAD if the buzzer sounds, *unless* it is a shot on goal. A shot on goal is defined as a ball being thrown in the air *towards an apponents basket*. Hence, the exception for "shot on goal" does not match, because the defender does not throw the ball towards the opponents goal. Hence it should be called off on a technicality. If the time did *not* expire before the ball passed through the basket, it *would* have counted (e.g. if there was 1 second on the clock or something)

Just some clarification for Play 5: Rule 5 2023-24 NFHS Basketball Case Page 40 Score three points for Team B. A ball that is thrown into a team's own goal from behind the three-point arc scores three points, regardless of whether the thrown ball was an actual try for goal. 5.2.1 SITUATION C: A1 throws the ball from behind the three-point line. The ball is legally touched by: (a) B1 who is in the three-point area; (b) B1 who is in the two- point area; (c) A2 who is in the three-point area; or (d) A2 who is in the two-point area. The ball continues in flight and goes through A's basket. RULING: In (a) and (b), three points are scored since the legal touching was by the defense and the ball was thrown by A1 from behind the three-point line. In (c), score three points since the legal touch by a teammate occurred behind the three-point line. In (d), score two points since the legal touch by a teammate occurred in the two-point area.

Greg, on Play-5, when the defender tips the ball in the basket, are you saying the goal does not count because the clock did not start properly or was there a rule violation? I'm confused as to why the goal does not count?

With .1 second on the clock, the only way a basket can occur is a tap in by the offense. As soon as the defense touches it, the clock should start and it would go to zero. Being that the tip by the defender does not count as a tap or try, it should have been blown dead immediately. The only way that bucket counts is if there is more time on the clock and the ball passes through the net before time expires. Hope this helps

Let's say the operator did start the clock properly. Here's why the basket wouldn't count. On the defender's touch, the clock starts and time expires before it goes through the basket. Since the defender's touch is not a try, the ball is dead when time expires. If it was tapped by an offensive player, that would be a try and the ball would be live until the end of the try since it was tapped before the horn sounded. Now, let's go back to what happened. Knowing how much time is on the clock before the in bounds play is crucial. Knowing what can happen by rule during the time left (IE: only a tap under 0.3 seconds) and that the defense cannot attempt a try at their own goal.

great discussion about the backcourt non violation. however, it would have been beneficial to explain why it wasnt a back court violation. Red never established front court status thus the reason to NOT call over and back. love your show.

I’ve watched 10 times and still don’t understand why it’s not backcourt. Rule 4-4-2 gives the ball front court status as soon as it’s “in contact” with the player… What am I missing?

@@edmarkey4057I also would like someone to cite a rule as to why this isn’t a backcourt violation. Rule 9-1 says you need team control in the frontcourt. Team control is established when the ball is handed to the throw in player (4-12-2d). The location of the ball is where it is touched by a player, player was in the frontcourt. Then the teammate was first to touch in the backcourt. Violation. What am I missing?

@@ryneeten Team control is only present on a throw-in for the purpose of awarding (Or not awarding I guess) free throws if a foul occurs by the throwing team during the throw-in. In this situation, team control has to be established inbounds before a backcourt violation could happen.

@@BetterOfficials Yeah I've heard that, and the case book scenario mentions team control in bounds....however, there is not a rule that I can find that states that. Only the casebook scenario. What rule is it that states that team control in bounds is required and what number is it? If it isn't there....shouldn't it be? Because that solves the issue that seems to be a ruling and casebook scenario that are against the rules as written.

Could any official clarify the results of plays 1 and 5 for me, please? In play one it was not a try for a goal however Greg stated it should count as a goal. Then play 5 also was not a try for a goal and Greg stated it should not be counted because it wasn't a try? I understand the clock changes the situation in play 5. However, I don't believe that was the stated reason. He stated it wasn't a goal because it wasn't a try and time would have expired. Thanks

Hey, Bulldog. The clock expiration is the only reason that two points would not be awarded in play 5. If this happens at any other point in the game (where there is ample time remaining and the defense taps the ball into the basket), two points are scored. As for play 1, Greg was being kind about the NFHS rules here: Non-intuitive is a nice way to say "illogical." At NCAAM, the result of play 1 is two points. I honestly was unaware that, by rule in NFHS, three points should be awarded here. It doesn't make any logical sense, intuitively. And, NFHS is the only level where this play would result in three points. Maybe a rule change would be good for all, as this rule is completely illogical.

In play #3 at 9:05 ... could you make the case the screeners legs are more than just "shoulder width" apart and thus not a legal screening position? Everything about staying in your primary, seeing the whole play etc. makes sense.

Play 1: 3 pt pass. Play 2: Charge incorrectly called a block, so, no, we didn't get everything. Play 4 was insane. How did the partners not address this clear mistake? Ditto for Play 5.

Those would not cancel each other out they would both be penalized and the penalties would be administered in the order of occurrence

Play 2 - L triggers a rotation when the ball is near half court in the middle of the floor. New T misses a travel by Blue 5 when he steps with his pivot foot before he starts his dribble. Play is curling away from L, so if the new C were to be in position after the rotation, he would have the best angle to officiate the contact. White defender has legal guarding position established and maintains it during Blue 5's dribble. I have a no-call on this play. Offensive player and defensive player make mutual contact, Blue doesn't go through white's position, and while white falls from the contact, they maintained LGP.

You can absolutely give a partner information if they misapply a rule and you know it happened. With judgment calls you are correct.

No - as soon as the defense touched the ball it should have been blown dead. Only way that basket can happen is by a tap in by the offense. Defense tipping that ball does not count as a tap or try so in order for that basket to count, the ball would have had to go through the net before time expires. If there was 10 seconds on the clock, then that would have counted.

Key word is own basket - that’s why when the defender tipped it, it couldn’t be counted as a legit try or tap and the ball should have been blown dead.

On play #5, even if the defense hadn't tipped the throw-in pass, the basket should not have counted. When the defender under the basket tapped the ball, the clock would have expired when the ball was in the air. By rule, it is not a shot when the team shoots at the wrong basket, which essentially occurred on this play. Therefore, the .01 second on the clock would have expired while the ball was in the air after the defensive player tapped it. No points credited to the white team.

Why would it expire in the air? The ball wasn't touched until it was tapped.

@@shawnmckinney8352 By rule, defense can not attempt a try at the opponent's basket. Therefore, when the defense tapped the ball the clock would start. And because the tap is not defined as a shot, the expiration of the clock would have occurred before the ball passed through the basket. Game over. No basket.

It amazes me how many high school officials use incorrect signals for stuff like player control fouls and blocking fouls. Like, how hard is it to do the correct signal with a hand behind the head for a charge or with open hands on hips for a block? And when you point it out to them, they look at you like you're the idiot. Incredible.
