I will integrate "smile" once Amazon lets you do it on the shortened urls. The long urls are problematic in many situations and if you add smile to the shortened ones it breaks the link.

While I think you hit the nail on the head (that paint is no good for moss), I do see a great use for it at miniature scale. To me it looks just like that dry slime that builds up on stonework where water once was. Normally you see this on pools or pillars once the water level has dropped in the summer. (Yes I know that it is a type of moss, but it looks very different to what most people call moss) Over all the final piece looks great with the thicker moss texture towards the top and the slime towards the bottom. Has a lot more character than if the piece was done with just one of the techniques. Keep up the fantastic, inspiring work!

In response to your PVA and a sprinkle of finely ground flock disappointment: I use PVA followed by a sprinkle of 'course' flock, by Woodland Scenics. It's much more lively and dimensional. However, I love your method of directly mixing turf and PVA. Thanks for the video!

I got a similar swamp moss effect with some cheap fine snow powder, PVA & bright green paint (all I had in the house at the time!) mixed together into a paste, then applied to my terrain using a coffee stirrer. It didn’t give me the effect I wanted immediately, I had to leave it to dry overnight & then got some cheap dark green acrylic & dry brushed it over the top. I’ve never used flock, I find it expensive especially for large terrain pieces when you need a lot of it! The cheap snow was pretty rubbish as snow but worked well for “moss”!

I’ve tried the FolkArt “Painted Finishes” Moss and Concrete on some foam board samples, and found that I had to think “outside the box” for making the moss set useful. It’s not useful for moss on mini terrain, as you found, but I thought it could be a decent undercoat for grassy areas - apply on the area, let it dry, then cover it with PVA and grass flocking. The concrete set, on the other hand, covered large flat areas pretty well, with just a little texture and decent color variation. Happy New Year!

I also tried FolkArt's Rust effects. A bit of the same opinion as you are but it still is a good and cheap source for rust colours if you're doing a good amount of industrial/metallic terrain. Although it might not be the best finish if used as is, it's still a usefull product. Cheers and a happy new year to all BMCers!

I have an idea to make thin modular walls without large bases. If you use a metal sheet as your table base you can use neodymium magnets glued to the bottoms of the modular walls. They won’t fall over, and would be thin enough as not to overlap grids much. You can paint the metal sheet, grid it, flock it, felt it etc... and the magnets will still work because they are super strong.
@boredjerboa
@boredjerboa 5 лет назад
A variation to your flocking paste that may be cheaper is texture paste. You can buy it or make you own with a 4-2-1 ratio of Cornflower, Acrylic paint, Glue. You can alter the consistency, if you want it thicker add more cornflower, thinner add more glue. It looks alot like mortar and can be easily textured at a variety of drying stages. I'm not a miniature painter/builder of any sorts and use it primarily on canvases etc but it might come in handy for you, if not for moss then for other things like stonework and can be used with stencils and can be embossed. Edit: I forgot to mention you can use baby powder instead of cornflour but your final result will smell like baby powder for ages

Best use for the Folk Art stuff for algae effects in pools that will be covered in resin water effects. It might work for large pieces of terrain if only just as a base to apply other moss and grass effects to, but for its price point I think it’s cheaper to mix up your own. I am curious to know what the other products Plaid sent you that got your attention t
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 5 лет назад
I think that would be a good way to "use it up" but I still wouldn't buy it for that. I'd just take the home made and add as much paint to the mix as I like . They also sent a concrete effect, and rust effect from the same line. I'm hoping those work better for our uses.

It's not a horrible idea, and wouldn't be bad to add a base, so you have a lot of very fine moss, then use the glue+flocking to give some texture for variance. But yeah, they need to go back to the drawing board with this one.

It might work better to try using polyeurethane gloss rather than the glue to attach it. Then add a second layer of the poly over the top once the first is dry with the flock sprinkled onto it. You get the more organic form as the second poly coat mixes things around and it gets extremely hard as well

What if you mix the flocking with mod podge instead? I'm just concerned that when the PVA glue dries, it will be shiny, so I thought maybe you could use matte mod podge instead?
