I have one of these myself. Jeremy's review is spot-on, exactly how I feel about this product. If you are a tabletop crafting-DM, then this product is probably not worth your time. But for those who are not big into terrain/miniatures, it works well for a visual representation of theatre of the mind. You can use dry or wet erase markers on it, but as stated in the video, be wary because the product will eventually get stained starting along the exposed central edges.
I've had this board for a couple months now and with weekly usage, the board has become stained and the spines of the folds have become broken with wear and tear. Again, Jeremy's review is great and the product is good for quick visuals and beginner dungeoneers.
having used a different brand of board thats relatively the same, but wider, I did like how easy it was to transport. the major downside i had, was how slow i was drawing rooms and areas out for encounters. the creases also didnt help, as my marker would bump up in my hand. I still bring it to game night though just in case, but have switched to Gaming Paper, because its cheap and I can draw my dungeons and areas ahead of time.
Cool board not really my style though. Have you ever made any of the Papercraft Wizards of the coast stuff? I think its a great quick alternative to the more time intensive stuff you often make, It doesnt look quite as good but its free, quick, easy and doesnt require any specialist tools its pretty great when your rushed for time. Would love to see a video on them just to see your thoughts if nothing else.
You mention there are lots of other cardboard battlemaps. Do you mind saying which ones? This is the only one I’ve come across that’s cardboard board game style map. Everything else I’ve seen are just the folding or roll up battlemaps. Thank you for the review.
I once made something like that out of graph paper I had laminated at an office supply store and a presentation board. Wanted to buy a professional mat, but my local game store is terrible about stocking useful things. It isn't pretty, but it worked in a pinch when I was like "oh crap, I'm DMing my first session and I have no grid!".
I see how you cleaning it, just a few moments after being drawn on, even WITH the elbow grease, is staining and discoloring the board. This *alone* gives me an instant "no" for my table. It's only going to stain worse if you leave the marks on the board longer, and what takes a "little" elbow grease now is going to take a LOT of elbow grease after the ink dries a little. Yes, I know the trick with putting fresh marks down... but again, the fresh marks are leaving stains behind regardless.
I would pick this up to use the hex side for custom maps in Ogre, a wargame from SJ Games. Ogre is great with the pack-in game board, but it really comes into it's own with custom maps. I used to make them up in map programs then get them printed t the local printer's shop, but could save me a fair amount of cash. Definitely gonna have to look at this as a possible game aide.
I have a huge roll up wet erase map with hexes and squares on opposite sides. Much bigger than that board. I’m sure it’s made by Chessex. Cleans easily most of the time... and baby wipes for the really tough stains!
Sometimes the drawn map will stay on the mat for weeks or months due to play session timing, not sure if this would be very useful if it is hard to clean. If you need to clean the battle mats really well products like Deep Heat will clean off dry erase marker that has been on for a year or more.Still going to stick to dungeon tiles for games I run.
I always admire your creative skills. I have a question on a project I am working on & I can’t figure out how to make it. Wondering if you could shine some light on it. How would you make for a tabletop rpg game a damaged control box for a sliding door?
I know you've probably been asked this before but is there a video you've made that describes the steps you go through to paint each model, especially for stonework and wood. Such as first the base coat is painted with a wet brush, then how you dry brush the next 2 layers, and finish with a wash made of ___, roundabout ratio, etc.
Well every build and paint job is a bit different, but each build video I show those steps for that piece....so yea, many of my videos have that, most actually.
Oh, okay thank you. I've just started working with painting with acrylic paints and I wanted to also know the basics of how you wet/dry brush to paint and the general ratio of your black wash?
Check my library of videos. I have a basics series it covers cheap paints, it covers dry brushing, I have a video on how to make a black wash. Just look through my videos, I’ve put in effort to cover these topics for beginners. The answers are there, just look.
+Black Magic Craft Sorry about if I annoyed you, I know you're probably busy. I just want to add that I love your videos and I admire your dedication to the art, and I think you're fantastic

My group has two of these. They're actually 13" x 11". I have no idea why either. Also, ours is already starting to rip and it's stained AF. No bueno. Good thing I'm building my own terrain! Already have DM Scotty's 2.5D Next system and the Dungeon Stackers are next on my to do list!
... How is this unique? I have a dry erase folding map almost twice this size that has hexes on one side and grid on the other. Even if it didn't, I could just slap a sheet of plastic over top.
Do wet erase markers have the same issue wiping off with a wet cloth? Do they still work on the surface given that it's so glossy? I ask because I don't use dry erase markers on my battlemaps.
I wish I could tell you, but I don’t actually own any wet erase markers as I don’t use them. So I can’t test. I expect they would work but don’t want to say for sure.
Liked the review, meh to the product. I like seeing product reviews for d&d gear cause a lot of the companies are pretty obscure. Nice to see whats out there. The board is super white, feel like it would clash with any and all terrain.. also hate hate hate boards you can't easily get the dry erase marker off of. Nothing is less transporting to a realm of fantasy then the lame ass half erased notes and old spell effects from three months ago. Side note I would have tuned in just to hear Jeremy say Reiviewsday Tuesday.
No, scared someone wars him on a T-shirt. Skeliie, on the other hand, is an icon of my childhood! Love him no end! XD Where did you get the shirt, if you do not mind me asking? Cheers!
Why scared someone wears a cartoon baphomet on a shirt? It's just a fictional character same as skeletor. Anyway, all my shirts come from redbubble.com
Thanks, I'll have a look. Have to say I had a quick search and found loads, was completely unaware there was a following for good old skelly. Skeletor rules good! And I will never accept some people think of him s a "fictional character"! XD
