🤣 mean bees! Hi Kamon. We have irish black bees here in Tipperary all from a wild nest and they are very very agressive but incredible survivors over winter and an experienced keeper here told me they produce 2-3 x more honey than the gentle ones ... idk, I'm a newbee, but they produced well last year. I had a hive on the northwest corner of my 100 + apairy that was always pissy, grumpy, and cranky more than any other one year. I first chalked it up to always having to be on guard with daily drift. Though that wasn't a good reason because a colony will accept tired out foragers, heavy with groceries, and allow them to come in free of charhe, pat down or body search. Then coming home one night late from work and in the dark, I saw a skunk visiting the entrance. I started to see his scratching and rolling of bees on the ground to kill or stun them, then gobble 'em up. Needless to say I put out live traps and caught 4 or 5 within the next week. A whole family of them I guess! 🐝

Here in southern Arizona it's common to have to deal with Africanized Hybrids which can be very unpredictable, and on a typical day working with Africanized bees, take the colony you worked with in this video and multiply the defensiveness/ aggressive behavior by at least a factor of 5. Most of the beekeepers here in So. Ariz. Keep their queens marked and typically re-queen such an aggressive colony. Take over swarms of Africanized bees into gentle colonies is fairly common as well.
@charleyfrancis8671
@charleyfrancis8671 Год назад
💯 I am also a Southern Arizona Beekeeper, you speak truth. Beekeeping in the Southwest it's a whole different ballgame. On a scale 1 to 10 I'd call that a 4 as far as aggressive goes. AHB actually have some positive traits but damn they can be a handful. And yes, I does get old. I requeen aggressively. Really good mesquite flow this year!

I had a 'mean' hive last season that got me through my cheap cloth suit ... bad enough I had to literally run away and then sneak back later to quickly put the hive back together. I have bees like this in texas and I don't treat em for mites and they thrive. I'm doing the opposite and killing my gentle carnolian and Italian and replacing them so I don't have to treat twice a year. These texas bees can survive our massive droughts. It would be good if you would have separated them and experimented with them, just checked this fall and seen how the mites were. That might be the key to mite resistance.
