What do I think ? I think you should always take a safety person with you who stands back, watches the edge give way, hears your scream, and goes for help.

Of course the person looking for help is alone... Not saying it's bad advice, but in this age where you can request help via satellite going along is not as dangerous as it once was. As long as you have a device that can communicate with the satellite.

I was a little north of there with my parents, driving along dirt roads looking for a swimming hole. We came upon a guy who had set up what looked to be a semi permanent camp. We thought about asking the man if he knew where the swimming hole was, but my dad and I both felt the hair on our necks stand up and we got out of there as quick as possible without talking to him. The two legged predators are far scarier than anything with four legs.

I know this area well. I've seen the hole/depression before, but never ventured too close to it. The west desert bordering Utah, Nevada and Arizona has some strange stories, and given that it's a bit off the beaten path, one should always exercise caution when exploring it. Lots of cool things to see, but also some sketchy places that are best explored when accompained by another person. He was trapped. Alone. In the end, to save his life, he had to hack of his right arm with just above the elbow, with his picket knife. 😮. He staggered out of the gully, and was rescued by two hikers. Married the girl he'd seen in his vision whilst pinned to the gully. Had kids. A happy ending. But, a mate or two with him to start with might have been kinda helpful. !!

@danpaulson927 A 9mm (+P) does very little to a mountain lion or bear. In this particular area there's not much worry for them, but in other areas he goes to there certainly is. Matter of fact, in serious bear country I know folks who carry 45-70 pistols (and the kick is about what you are imagining lol). It's funny that folks immediately think of hand guns though. A rifle or shotgun is generally a better option in the wilderness, but can cramp your style climbing into caves and around cliff dwellings. Honestly, I hope his selfie stick is good enough to handle snakes - those slithering buggers are more common than large animals.

I was going to make the same recommendations. Binoculars can be very useful to see ahead along a trail as well as getting some clarity on things like that weird mannequin. Coincidently, I just did a local hike today and a trekking pole made the downhill parts much easier and safer. Flashlight is an every day carry item for me. Also if going into a deep cave or a mine, using extreme caution, it is recommended to have three light sources with extra batteries for each.

Wow, the statue . About a mile from the road in a local forest there was clearing completely surrounded by Pine trees. My girl friend of the time and I used to go there for outdoor romance since nobody would know the clearing existed. Years later while just going for a nature walk alone, I noticed that some trees must have died since you could now see thru the trees and realize that a clearing was there. I walked thru the now sparcer trees into the clearing. I was completely startled ! Someone had tied a mannequin to a tree and used it for shot gun target practice. For a split second I thought it was a person, which freaked me out much more than you were. Having experienced that, I immediately thought thats what the statue might be. Then having seen it in the distant shot, I figured it was a virgin Mary statue, like outside of a Catholic Church, and someone had set up some kind of shrine. But, its bizarre that anyone would go to the trouble of lugging large things good distances... I also saw a mannequin in a WW2 bunker as well. So it seem these kind of placements might just be to scare other people.

You should watch some of the you tube mine explorer's ! The message is basically stay out and stay safe! In 2006,BRITISH COLUMBIA has one of the worst mine accidents! 6 ppl died ,I may have the body count in the wrong order but the point is here: The mine had closed,but spread large chunks of rock and covered it with clay! The moment I read that,I knew that'd cause a significant problem, as rock rotts,and produces sulphuric acid gases or hydrochloric gases,and it all flowed into the mine shaft pump house,the caretaker went down to check on the pump ,as soon as he was a few feet down ,the air was replaced with sour gas,and he died instantly! The next person that came to see why he had not come back,saw him at the bottom of the pump house shaft,so he climbed down to rescue his fellow employee, and upon getting into the gas,he also died! Then the 3rd went in and I can't remember of he died,(but there where 2 more that fell in and died,)the ambulance was called,so he might of made it out and lived long enough to call for help,but these gases kill instantly your 3rd breath! The female ambulance attendent went halfway down,saw the 6 bodies ,noticed no movement,started to feel sick ,and climbed out, there was a 6th person that died in this mine accident so as an old prospector ,I've studied a lot of mine u tube movies all have some beneficial info,but out of the hundreds I've watched,only one (1) ever mentioned the toxic hydrochloric or sulphuric acids gases that are released when the water in a mine shaft on the floor, is disturbed or already in the air and said,"When you start to see stars in your eyes,turn around immediately and go back out! Or you will pass out,go into a coma and since you can't move you keep on breathing this gas till you DIE! In a few minutes. 6 ppl died in that bc mine accident,and you can research it online,but as others have or havnt said don't go alone,don't endanger your life and you don't have the proper equipment to go into that hole and it's slippery and you can slide into a crevice, and die and no one will no where you are! And even if you only skin yourself or get banged up sliding into that hole,you don't have any way of getting out as well as getting skewered on some stalagmites! Cell phones don't work through thick rock,neither do 2 way radios,I tried mine in the basement, the guy outside on the sidewalk couldn't receive my signal,so didn't hear me! Death by starvation,dehydration,and injury is not a nice way to go! There is the Turner valley in Southern Alberta,with sour gas wells,if you breath this on the first breath run! Don't breath again,as the second wil knock you down and the 3rd is death,! There's a movie about it where a bull elk breathed then fell.to it's knees then rolled over dead the hunter grabbed his son and ran to his jeep to get away,hoping the wind was going away from them! A young man just made it back to his parents home he'd breathed 1 and a half lungs of this gas and is crippled for life! That's why gas companies flare off sour gases! Be a lot smarter in your curiosity and adventures,or as I say,if in dought,don't do it! In my diving classes the buddy team in scuba diving is taught and the plan you make us: plan your dive and dive your plan! Same fir exploring, take a buddy with you,or at least tell the local authorities were your going and how long thst way they can search for you if your to late returning! Also if you do watch these mine explorer's note that most are accompanied by a freind,some go alone like a few I've seen,but that's a bad idea! Also,animals like cougars bears and illegal drugs being produced could run you into some serious trouble! Play safe,play smart! And come back alive! In this cave the jokes on you but it could have been a very serious situation!

This is a well known sink hole in the Nevada desert. The surrounding area going down is loose rock and gravel. Our family explored it years ago. It was a freaky place especially if you notice the large cracks in the walls that could break loose.

There are lots, lots more crazy people in the cities than there are in the deserts. I've spent fifty years hiking in the deserts of the American west, and never once run across a crazy person. I don't understand why so many people promote the idea that remote deserts and forests and mountains are somehow unsafe. Is it something the firearms industry does to sell more guns?
@StandingStillStuff

@@TashiRogo on our trips to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon we found two graves with wrought iron fence around them.They were from the 1800s..We found a large room inside a mountain on a back road with a ceiling covered in ash..The second time we went there exploring a sturdy door had been placed over the opening. We did not try to open it.We once found a rusted shell of a model T Ford in an out of the way ditch while exploring around an abandoned store on the road to the Grand Canyon..In that same area were walking in a field and stopped because ahead of us the field of tall grass was in complete motion but the wind was not blowing..We stopped just in time because In front of us for about 2 football fields in length there were little red spiders in motion spinning webs..There were millions of little red spiders..These were the nice adventures..I won’t tell of the other adventures..I don’t want to give any directions or tell of things that will cause others to go looking for artifacts or ancient sites..American Indians do not want strangers on their lands and they will protect their land..We never removed or bothered anything we saw or found..We were not pot hunters as we both were employed by the government.We respected the people and their land.

I did some research and it’s a fairly popular spot, lots of videos of people going in. I thought it might be a geocache at first. It’s not but tons around the outside of the sinkhole and a nearby geo-art. Some cachers said there were people shooting in the sinkhole when they visited, so maybe it’s a target. Either that or some art/prank thing. It looks like it’s less than a few months old looking at recent pictures. The name is Beaver Dam Sinkhole if anyone wants to see more pics.

Personally, for the type of exploring that you do I think you would be very wise to take a course or 2 in geology at a local community college for what you are seeing out in the hinterland. Very helpful, gives context to many many things.

I would have shown the pictures to a geology professor from a local university and asked him to explain the formation. Was it a sink hole? Was it dug out for mining purposes? The top of cave seemed to be black. My sense is that someone has had fires down there. Potentially our pranksters?

Wasn't much trouble I'd guess. Looks in bad shape, they probably just threw it down there. Might have been someone else who set it up. Pretty good joke on their part, it would be hard to see it wasn't real from the top when you're in the sun and it's in the shadows.

Check with the area grotto's. They will definitely have information on that cave. Between the beaten path around the surface of the sink and the creosote on the walls and ceiling from a fire, people definitely go out there fairly frequently. I'm sure the cave has been thoroughly explored.

During my lifetime I have explored much of CO, UT, and NM, SOLO hiking and camping for several days at a time, and have thoroughly enjoyed visiting some very remote regions. Now in my mid 70's, I have slowed down a bit, but am still actively exploring. I learned from personal experiences back in the 1970's and later on, that truly it is the two-legged varmints that one must be most wary of, especially if you encounter more than one of them. Since those earlier experiences, I had three "hairy" encounters, one of which I am quite certain I survived simply because I let the varmints know that I was armed, without "brandishing or threatening" (things suddenly became very polite.....). And in at least two other instances, I was lucky to avoid the varmints and a "hairy" encounter, but certainly wished that I had been armed, not only to defend myself but others with me if I needed to! Since then, I now go armed almost everywhere in my explorations, and do remain well-trained in tactical self-defense with my firearms. I carry legally concealed, so as not to inadvertently cause concern or fear in others..... it's nobody's business but my own! My advice is to approach every human encounter in an open and respectful manner, and that a friendly approach will generally pay-off in a mutual return, and usually results in a pleasant experience in sharing the wilder regions for everyone. That said.... Keep a "dynamic situational awareness", trust your instincts, ands don't let your imagination run away with your reasoning..... if the hair on your neck stands up, or your adrenaline starts to "rush" for no apparent reason, then it is probably time to move away from any closer encounter..... remember to "breathe"! Stay Safe!
